Күн бұрын

Jeanne d'Albret was born on 16 November 1528 in the château of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and died on 9 June 1572 in Paris. She was Queen of Navarre from 1555 until her death under the name of Jeanne III. She was the only daughter of Henry II, King of Navarre, and Marguerite of Angoulême.
Jeanne was related to François I of France, and she was raised under his authority at the French court. She married Antoine de Bourbon, the first prince of the blood and duke of Vendôme, and was the mother of King Henry IV of France. Jeanne d’Albret played an important role in the growth of Protestantism in France. At the beginning of the Wars of Religion, she separated from her husband, who had joined the Catholic camp, and established the Calvinist Reformation on her lands.

I'm so glad you made a video about Queen Jeanne. I became more interested in her story after learning about her mother from your last story. Thank you so much for this video. The Kingdom of Navarre is fascinating.

Excellent content and presentation as always. In particular you did a great job with choosing the portraits etc. I love the French portraits of the time and even prefer the Clouets to Holbein.

Hi, awesome live history video, I enjoyed it. How are you and cute Rani your cat doing? I'm doing well. My cat Benjamin says hi to you and cute Rani your cat, he sends his purrs. He's mad right now because he did not get lots of attention. So he tipped his water dish over. In the end he got lots of attention. Did Rani your cat play tricks on you in Italy? That's wonderful you had a great time in Italy. My favorite vacation was the south of France years ago. Have a great day. See you next video greetings from Canada 😊

Benjamin sounds like such a cutie pie ❤. Rani was a very good girl in Italy, she's not overly confident so she tended to stick close to me, but I was glad she was there.

I'm new to your channel and I was wondering if you have ever done a series of videos about the four Queens from Provence. I read about them in a book by Nancy Goldstone. The two oldest ones were married to the Kings of England and France and the two younger sisters were married to the Kings younger brothers. I believe that Marguerite, the oldest was married to St Louis. She was not big on the idea of his sainthood which I thought was funny

@@TheKingsofFrance their story gets even more interesting because the youngest sister and her husband, the Duke of Anjou took over the throne of Naples. One of their descendents was clean Joanna the first of Naples, Sicily in Jerusalem. She was the queen during the schism and was able to bring the pope back to Rome. And you probably know the rest of that story. Anyway the book is called a notorious reign of Queen Joanna the first of Naples, Sicily and Jerusalem. I've never watched game of thrones from but from what I understand that story which is nonfiction is way better than game of thrones it just doesn't have any dragons in it

Another amazing woman of this period. I feel sure she would have been disappointed that her son converted to Catholicism even though it was to gain the throne of France.

Have you ever seen the late 1970's film version of 'The Three Musketeers' with - among so many stars - Faye Dunaway as Milady de Winter? There's a scene where she is locked in the Tower, I believe, and she's magnificent in a huge white satin dress studded with pearls. She asks the jailer for a Bible, and he says, "But you are a Catholic!" And she replies, "Non, je suis une Huguenotte, comme on persecute en France." I was a teenager but I thought of my Huguenot ancestors and was blown away. Milady was lying of course, but it was just too much trouble to explain to my best friend I had gone to the cinema with, him a Canadian Presbyterian, what being Huguenot was. My maternal ancestors emigrated to la Nouvelle France but the Catholics suppressed them from, as we say, 'the get go'. They then moved to Ontario and blended in with the Protestant culture there, losing any link to France and French culture, except for the cuisine, thank God.

I haven't seen the movie, yet another one I need to be on the look out for. Thanks for sharing the story about your maternal ancestors. Very cool also that you know so much about them. I don't really know a lot about my ancestors, our family tree does not go back very far so I doubt there's anything interesting to report about them.

@@TheKingsofFrance My grandfather's cousin was a genealogist by profession, so we had an 'expert' on our side. When I was a kid she told me that tracking down ancestors in the early British and French colonies in North America wasn't that difficult. There had never been the tremendous destruction of buildings and archives that took place in Europe due to wars, over the centuries. Church records here go back to the early days and records of property ownership and taxation are all pretty much intact. My ancestor's house that he built in 1780 in Nova Scotia when we fled Boston during the Revolution is still there. I had the letter signed by George III appointing him collector of taxes. I still have a solid oak chest that came over from Scotland with him. It doesn't look particularly pretty but I like the idea that the oak that it was made from probably began growing in the 1600's.
