In this captivating episode, we delve into the historic Battle of Yellow Tavern and shed light on how land development has tragically eroded this once hallowed ground. Join us as we explore the significance of this pivotal Civil War battle and the urgent need for battlefield preservation.
The Battle of Yellow Tavern, fought on May 11, 1864, during the American Civil War, was a critical engagement between Union and Confederate forces. Led by the legendary General J.E.B. Stuart, the Confederate cavalry clashed with Union troops under the command of General Philip Sheridan. This fierce confrontation marked a turning point in the war and had far-reaching implications for both sides.
However, the passage of time has not been kind to this historic battlefield. The relentless march of progress and land development has encroached upon the sacred grounds where brave soldiers once fought and sacrificed their lives. Today, the scars of urbanization and modernization threaten to erase the memory of this significant event in our nation's history.
Our journey takes us through the remnants of Yellow Tavern, where we witness firsthand the devastating impact of unchecked development. We explored the encroachment of highways, shopping centers, and residential areas that have all but erased the physical traces of this once hallowed ground.
Join us as we advocate for the preservation of Yellow Tavern and other battlefields across the country. Through awareness, education, and community involvement, we can ensure that future generations have the opportunity to connect with the past and honor the sacrifices made by those who came before us. Join us and ‪@AmericanBattlefieldTrust‬ for preservation efforts.

That’s why I’m a member of the Battlefield Trust. We try to preserve battle sites. Stuart’s wife arrived an hour after he died.

Love the topics and geography and figures you are highlighting. Makes me miss Virginia from afar. In the past, it was strange to visit this site, as it has been so absorbed by development, makes it hard to imagine that other era and battle in particular.

I really like watching this video podcast because you really show as much as possible into a short and informative piece of time, I really appreciate how you make it feel like I’m right there with you shootings the video footage and listening to you explain the terrain and actions that took place, thanks so much because you have put a lot of thought into how you want to convey your message, and unbiased information about what took place on these fields of struggle and carnage of Americans with different perspectives on the future of their understanding of self government, and the way it would shape what we are today, because of what they did there. It is extremely important and emotional to accept these very true facts, that there passions was so high and beliefs so strong, that death ☠️ was the very essence of what would decide the power of the struggle, that would in time make us all one of the greatest superpower’s of the world with high responsibilities, that we can and should know from our experience, that mighty strength of power is a tool that must be tempered with certain cautions and not to be taken lightly, not for granted, and that it is seriously in our hands 🙌, to not shed blood, for the sake of power but for the sake of justice and laws, and rights, and to defend those, and to oppose those that would trample them for it is what they done then that has lead to this our responsibility that those men both sides, fought for their beliefs and died for will not be fought in vain, for the side that lost, surrendered to honorable parole’s and the winner’s of the New Republic, with additional amendments to the Constitution, which are adopted by the states of today, the United States, has fought many wars together and in the last half of the past century we are integrated into the multiple cultural people that we are and have become, We the people of the United States of America, owe it to ourselves to learn these things, so we will not have to ever repeat such a domestic issue between us again, we are together and should be resolved to make us the best team on this glorious globe 🌎, and help others see this good light we are striving to be! Thanks I really appreciate your intelligence! ❤ You seem to be a very good man! You are doing the right thing the right way!

From where I’m sitting now I can see the home of John Huff, who fired the shot that killed Jeb Stuart. Probably one of the single most devastating of the entire Civil War.

The name of the Union soldier that shot JEB Stuart was John Huff whom was in the 5th Michigan Calvary

Stuart was with his wife in a nearby house when word came that union cavalry was coming and afraid for his family’s safety he immediately ran to his horse to go after the enemy. He was a gentleman and great cavalry officer!!!

I’ve never heard that before, I do know that the evening he died he asked to have his wife brought to him. I think she wasn’t able to make it to him before his passing and her mourning for him was loud and profound.

@@HistorywithWaffles yes and after the surgeon told him he was going to die he told them what he wanted to do with his personal effects, a hat pin that was of the confederate flag was to go back to the young girl who gave it to him, his spurs went to someone else, then later they sang his favorite hymn but being weak he trying as he might couldn’t actually speak. There is a really good account of his actual death by history gone wilder. Dr Lucus wilder made a whole video on his last 24 hours. So sad how he passed away!!!

Meade interrupted Grant's whittlein' & cigars, with Sheridan wanting to do this attack & Grant said if can do it, then let him...Lee's words where a joke...He superceded a promotion before Gettysburg, Stuart basically left Lee w/ inexperienced calvery
@HistorywithWaffles

I disagree, you don’t just leave someone with inexperienced cavalry. They were experienced. Had plenty of it. Leadership changes and morale play a huge role in combat. The same exact men can operate differently under different leaders. By the time JEB Stuart dies most of the senior leadership that army started with was either dead or fighting disease in their own bodies. They were also losing men they couldn’t replace. At this point in the war the Union army was bringing units by the train loads from around Washington DC and other areas that had never even seen combat before. Meade on the other hand was no Sheridan fan. Those two bickered and Grant was always the clear level headed thinker. Meade was in command fully however and Grant supported, with a nudge in directions, what Meade wanted. It was a great relationship and one that is often overlooked.

Stuart's friend and fellow officer, Heros Von Borke, went back to his castle in Prussia and proudly flew the Confederate battle flag over it for many years, until the day he died....in honor of Stuart and the men he fought with. With all the things happening in our cities today, even though I am from the North, I have the feeling that Lee and Stuart actually were fighting for US !!

I totally agree. I'm from the south(Georgia). Our government is now so corrupt that I don't see ANY hope for ANY of us. The south was fighting for their CONSTITUTIONAL states' rights, which included the right to secede! Yes...Lee and Stuart WERE fighting for US. You are so right.

@@HistorywithWaffles Many in the South, and many in the North, PREDICTED that freed slaves would never successfully " amalgamate " into society. They foresaw the problems of unsuccessfull integration to come. This was why GRANT himself tried hard to get Congress to annex Haiti for the purpose of providing a new homeland for the freed slaves....much like the creation of Israel for Jewish people. The ghetto thugs who terrorize and kill in our cities are just one example of what was believed would happen with emancipation....this WAS on the minds of many fighting in the South and certainly was on the mind of Grant !
