The alternates are SFO, SEA, CDB, ADQ en route. As you approach the islands it changes to other Hawaiian airports like LIH, OGG, KOA and lesser known JRF. This was one of my routes with Alaska Airlines during my 28 year career with them. I always loved going to the islands from ANC. A nice one day getaway for a pilot and crew!

When you explained the end it reminded me of the time when an Alaska airlines gate agent asked the captain if I could come in the cockpit as I wanted to be a pilot when I was older, and they let me sit in the first officer seat and mess with the controls and turn on the anti ice and seat belt sign, then they mention me and said thanks for helping with the pre flight checks in the announcement. This was years ago but I never forgot it as I am still working hard to become a pilot. Truly amazing service at Alaska airlines

I have lived in Alaska for a long time but when I moved here I was surprised by the Alaska Hawaii connections. One of the big factors is work, a lot of Hawaiians come to Alaska to work but go home often. My husbands family moved from Alaska to Hawaii for college and back to Alaska for work. Anchorage public radio even has a Hawaiian music show and Juneau a Hawaiian restaurant. Thanks for the great video's!

737-NG got 180 minutes ETOPS so technically, can return to Anchorage if less than halfway there or continue to Honolulu. However: There is Kodiak AK that can be used, Midway that can be used. Also consider that depending on winds and location at time of engine failure Vancouver or Seattle might be within 3 hours.

I thought about Kodiak and Midway also. Its seems however that Midway would always be much further away than Honolulu or other Hawaii island airports in the case of an in-flight emergency. Of course it could still be an option if for some reason none of the Hawaii airports were available or the usual flight path was forced westward for some reason. The runway at Midway is certainly long enough.

One of the main alternates used would be Cold Bay, Alaska. Midway is too far east to work.

Alaska is my favorite US carrier, period. I've used them all over the West Coast. Head and shoulders above the carriers that primarily serve us here in Texas (American, Southwest and United).

I use to fly Hawaiian Airlines from Anchorage to Honolulu. It was great. They made me feel like I was in Hawaii as soon as I got on the airplane. Back in 2006ish Hawaiian Airlines then had a charter airline take over that route for a year. It felt like a glorified cattle car. Then Alaska started to fly that route and that is what we have been flying since then.

During the summer, Alaska is 2 hours ahead of Hawaii. During the winter, Alaska is 1 hour ahead. Hawaii doesn't do the time change. When I lived in Hawaii, I sometimes had to think what time of year it was when I called the mainland.

My Mom lived in Hawaii in the 60’s, she was in Portland Oregon when a terrible accident back home which required emergency flight status to get her home. She flew PDX to HNL via ANC in a jump seat on a mail flight. She said it was a scary flight and that is coming from a woman who was a flight attendant with pan am who would fly r&r flights into Vietnam.

Western Airlines pioneered the route way back in 1980 when they started Honolulu-Anchorage-London/Gatwick flights with DC-10's. Delta axed the HNL-ANC route after they bought Western in 1987. Good to see AS re-start it.

Western Airlines started the route in the early 1960's with Boeing 707's. The passenger load factors were pretty abysmal. Sometimes as few as 30 passengers on a 200 seat airplane. Saving grace was US Mail subsidies. This lasted until deregulation in the late 1970's.

I’m from washington, so flying among alaska airlines is not scarce whatsoever. Its been 3yo since I’ve flown in any airplane but I would go back to Alaska without a second thought no doubt. They offer amazing service and have awesome flightcrew. The pilots are extremely friendly, the flight attendants basically tend to your every need. Its an overall awesome airline and I hope they extend their routes in the future so I can enjoy the vast spands of other countries and continents.

What a shame flying in first class is now...especially to Hawaii...i flew on Continental from Orlando-Houston-Maui return 17 years ago in first class...round trip ticket were $1,500 per passenger.....The Houston=Maui and Maui=Houston flight was incredible,we were fed non stop for 7 hours and food was prepared by Roy Yamaguchi...famous owner of Roy's restaurant,we also had dinner at his restaurant in Maui.The flight attendant rolled the liquor cart with full bottles of liquor and First growth Bordeaux wines...I drank Mouton Rothschild and Chateauneuff du pape throughout the flights...Taittinger Blanc de Blancs and Krug were the two champagnes served along with vintage ports and sauterne for desert wines...The highlight of the flight was when were about to land,the flight attendant brought out packed sandwiches to take with us..they 12 inch subs loaded with meats and cheeses...I wish flying like this would return soon...My second best flight was on Turkish Airways business class from Washington DC to Istanbul 6 years ago with an onboard chef...and did not know Turkey had some of the best wines in the world..The Raki was also flowing non stop..

Flew Alaska in 19, before the world exploded. It was an absolutely amazing flight, the cabin crew were top notch, the food was on point (we were in first), and I've told all my friends since then if they have the chance, fly Alaska. I feel very fortunate to live in Seattle and have been a loyal Alaska Airlines customer for nearly 20 years. In all that time I have not had one problem during my many travels with Alaska. Not one. I have also witnessed happy, satisfied customers, because Alaska employees consistently do give that extra something for each flight. I have grown accustomed to consistent, reliable service from Alaska Airlines.

It’s like Thursday was my Mother’s first birthday since she passed late last year. I didn’t think negative, I thought about all the great memories we made together. My first flight on a jet was on an Alaska Airlines Convair 880 in 1966. As I recall, it was their only jet at the time and got quite a workout flying from Alaska to the Pacific Northwest and back. I was 14 back then. My outbound flight was a military charter from Elemendorf AFB to McChord AFB in Tacoma. My return was a scheduled flight from SEA to ANC. Alaska made good use of that jet. It's so amazing to me to see how this airline has grown into what it is today, especially as so many others have come and gone!

Another great video Jeb. Loved the commentary about the wonderful airline staff who are out there. I recently flew on four different Southwest flights. The employees were absolutely amazing and friendly. Another shout out needs to go to the wonderful staff at Avis rent a car at Indianapolis airport. Short staffed, but servicing every customer with a small. You get back what you give. My mask might be on in the airports, but I always have a smile in my voice. FYI. Back in the late 19702 and early 1980s, Western Airlines offered a nonstop flight between ANC and HNL. They flew the route using a DC-10 and it was heavy military personnel and cargo between the two states. I think it may have been seasonal service back then. If any WA folks out there remember this service, please give us an update. Western was struggling in the late seventies and moved their main hub from Denver to Salt Lake City but was finding niche routes like ANC and HNL.

Western started ANC-HNL flights in July 1969. From October 1980 to October 1981 the flight operated HNL-ANC-LGW. When I joined Western in 1983 the flight was year round 3 or 4 days a week. Delta continued to fly the route for a short time after the merger with service ending January 1988.

Hawaiian Airlines used to have flights to and from Hawaii & Alaska. This stopped about 10-15 years ago.

I flew Alaska from SeaTac to DFW in Jan ‘21, the flight attendant talked to me as I was in seat 1A and I told her the last time I flew was in 1965. She gave me a set of wings, I know it is usually for kids, but I was touched by her sweet gesture.

Great job Jeb. I must say I was recently on one of those flights where we went out to the tarmac only to wait for almost an hour, head back to the gate, deplane, wait for another hour and a half only to try it again but finally get to my destination (EWR) about six hours late but safe. Your editorial was right on point, we as travelers often forget the sacrifices being made by airline staff and they don't deserve threats or physical violence (ala Spirit airlines staff) just ridiculous! What a lucky man you are Jeb. I’ve mentioned Alaska is my favorite airline, with quite a lot of that being contributed to my dad being a pilot for them, but my favorite Alaska livery is the Honoring Those Who Serve, so I will not even attempt to hide my jealousy that you got to fly on that beautiful aircraft from Alaska to Hawaii. You got to enjoy that beautiful American flag wingtip for 6 hours. Thank you for also talking about the airlines history. When people find out my dad is a pilot for Alaska, many ask why they’re based in Seattle. Now instead of having to explain it again and again, I can refer them to your video. Great video as always.

Fun fact-I was on the maiden voyage of that plane introducing the Honoring Veterans livery. You should see their Salmon Thirty Salmon livery. Awesome! Lived in Hawaii for around 12 years but never visited Alaska. They used to have a triangle route Hawaii to someplace in US and Alaska. The triangle fare was a thing years ago. Have your ever heard of it? My first visit to Hawaii was in 1971 a mere 12 years from. Statehood! Things were different back then and I spent 2 summers there at age 15 and 16 visiting my brother who moved there. Getting to know the true beach boys and surfers of Waikiki back then was a great thing. After school I moved there but finally returned to Midwest.

As always great video. In 1993 I flew that route on a Hawaiian Airlines L1011 while working with Camp Adventure Youth Services out of the University of Northern Iowa. I was scheduled to work that whole summer in Anchorage however halfway through was transferred to a program in Hawaii. On the way back I had to get back to Anchorage to catch my original itinerary back to Iowa. Honolulu to Anchorage to Minneapolis to Waterloo was a long travel day that helped drive my love of commercial aviation. Thank You for a trip down memory lane.

True, HA used to operate to ANC. They stopped operations in the early 2000's due to recessions. Thats when AS had an opportunity to relaunch it as seasonal and turned it to year round.

Alaska is great based in Seattle since I live there and since it is still in the lower 48 but has easy access to Alaska and it’s awesome Milk run while having nice regional service with Horizon and SkyWest. Those options could be available if based in Anchorage but less popular with the lower population in the state of Alaska. That said Alaska is my favorite and forever airline and I will always fly them no matter what. The service and regional flights keep me coming back though I think the regional fleet should add CRJ-7’s. That’s just my take and my opinion. Great video and have a great day.

First of all, your video is great! So now, please excuse me as Hawaii is a place I love. Jeb your shirt absolutely screams non-Hawaii. Especially when Hawaiians want to identify Haole. I can say that after being close to two Hawaiian families, for 26 years, and I am definitely a Haole. After my first year with the 'natives' I had none of my normal shirts anymore, they were all "Aloha" shirts. I was glad to have them. They have all worn out now. Hawaii is one beautiful state, as are the people. We just had a Hawaiian native win the first Olympic Gold Medal in surfing, in case you did not know. They are a proud people, with reason. You have to read the history, but it won't be easy if you have not already done it. Sorry... it was a sad occurrence. Regardless, Hawaiian people are pretty darn happy, and pretty proud. I was glad to be among them. By the way, her name is Carissa Moore. I was proud of her.

I work for Alaska and have dispatched this flight a few times. It can be a challenging route to work, given the range and fuel supply of the aircraft... ETOPS alternates are usually Cold Bay or King Salmon, and Lihue or Honolulu.

Are you guys ETOPS 180? Besides running the APU are there any other requirements specific to the 737?

@@Ridejumpfly Yes we are ETOPS 180. The 737 isn't any different than other A/C as far as equipment or requirements, even the APU only has to be run under certain conditions related to it's maintenance status.

@@Ridejumpfly It always has to be available, but as long as it is proven to be reliable enough to start in flight we dispatch without it running the whole time.

I’m surprised you can rely on the weather at Cold Bay and King Salmon. It must be tough in the winter months. Can you use ANC/OGG and keep it under 3hrs?

Reminds me of my Atlanta-Cape Town direct flight many years ago (plus more recent Sydney-Johannesburg flights) - lots of ocean to cover, in a 747 though...not so sure of doing the same in a twin...
