J Disk's frequency dependent correlation coefficient is less correlated so spatial impression would be better than ORTF.

I just received the Haun Jecklin Disk and wanted some information on how to use it properly, so this video was exactly what I needed, thank you very much! I wasn't aware that you're supposed to use omnis. I have some, but nonetheless I think I'll also do a little experimentation with cardioids. Very nice that you included audio samples with ORTF also! Except for the fact that I thought the ORTF sounded much better, so I'm beginning to wonder if I might have wasted my money buying the disk. But of course it's far too soon for me to pass final judgment. But thanks again!

Merci beaucoup . Would you consider Jecklin disc configuration ( or Ortf ) as a good option for recording piano voice casting clips for lyric singers? Would you suggest an alternative such as simply use a H6 ( or lower). Any related URL to consult? Enjoy strings.
@jweatherly263 жыл бұрын
I know I'm replying 3 months late and you probably arent looking for an answer any more. In my ameture opinion, ORTF and XY pattern produce a cleaner recording of a single instrament, where as a J-disk would be ideal for recording a concert/the whole band from a single point.

I want to sincerely congrats you for the very high quality of the content, and the recording sound and your charisma with calm atmosphere. That said, to me the difference (with headphones) is not that much between the 2! Is the 2 layer of foam are stick to a ring or if the disk is full under the foam? Bravo from Montreal Qc.
@franguidry6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for stopping by. The disk is a solid and fairly thick piece of high impact plastic with foam stuck to it on each side. The big difference I notice when listening with headphones is the additional bass response of the omni mics. There are fundamental differences in the low end response of omni mics vs any directional mic, it's inherent in the physics. So the J Disk is an attempt to improve the stereo image when using omni mics. Fran

This is great! Thanks so much for the video. I'm making a disk myself. Is it essential to be able to rotate the disc? Could I achieve the same results by moving the mic stand itself to create different relationships between the mics and the disc for tonal balance?
@homebrewedmusic2 жыл бұрын
No need for the rotating disc at all as far as I can tell. The latest version of the disc spec calls for a larger disc and I found an article that suggests using rockwool for the disk material. I think I'm going to build one of these myself: gearspace.com/board/remote-possibilities-in-location-recording-amp-production/1056249-jecklin-disk-revisited-diy.html And this Wikipedia article has a slightly different spec: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jecklin_disk Fran

hi what about the spacing between two mics? It looks on the video that the space is 16,5 not the second 'improved' twice as big version, that is mentioned in wikipedia am I correct? My idea is to use 16,5cm spacing that is already in place in my tascam recorded - tascam dp 008, and to mimic Jecklin disk idea approach I would make a dividing disk that would be attached to the recorder, what do you think?Best Regards M
@homebrewedmusic5 жыл бұрын
You're right, this demo uses the smaller spacing. The larger spacing is used with a larger disk as I recall and the mic mounts on my disk would make it hard to achieve the wider spacing. I think your idea of using a disk with your recorder sounds excellent. Fran

Thanks for this info! In your opinion, would this be a good method for recording a young student’s drum circle outside on the grass at a park? I have ksm 141’s. We’ll be set up in a semi circle with 6 feet between each student. I’ll be at the focal point of the circle. Do you think I should place the mics in the middle of the circle, or above and behind me? Any thoughts would be much appreciated
@homebrewedmusic4 жыл бұрын
My first thought would be to use the KSM141s in a spaced array. ORTF is a good model: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ORTF_stereo_technique I would place this array near the center of the semi-circle, perhaps back a bit. Hopefully you'll have a chance to test some mic configurations?? If I were you I would try to do a quick recording in ORTF then switch the KSM141s to Omni and space them about 16" and moved in closer than the center of the semi-circle. Then listen to the results and choose the better one for your final recording. Fran

You seem like such a decent guy! Thanks for this. I'd imagine that a piece (or two) of acoustic foam would be a cheaper option. I'm not sure I'm entirely convinced that this adaptation makes a difference with, compared to without. I haven't seen this in videos of top studios, although, this seems specific omni polar patterns, and I have no personal reference, as I generally use a cardioid polar pattern
@homebrewedmusic4 жыл бұрын
Thaks for visiting and commenting. Simple acoustic foam won't give the same result as a solid disk. It's certainly possible to cobble together a working Jdisk without spending for a commercial disk, though. Perhaps the best thing about this commercial disk is the mic mounting arrangement. The OSS or Jecklin disk technique was developed by an engineer/professor who works with classical music in concert halls. It's not usually used in studio recordings. Of course studio recordings tend to be multi-miked, while the purpose of the Jdisk is intended to be a single main pair that captures an entire ensemble. The Jecklin Disk is indeed designed around omni mics. Omnis have a fundamentally different response to low frequencies compared to directional mics. Spaced omnis are another technique often used for recording classical ensembles, giving a more enveloping sense of space and more accurate low frequencies while sacrificing precise location and mono compatibility. The Jdisk is intended to give more detailed location and mono compatibility while maintaining the benefits of the omni pattern. My use of the Jdisk is out of the norm since I'm recording a single instrument with a close mic distance, but I have made some of my most satisfying recordings using this technique. I also "break the rules" and use ORTF spaced cardioids for some of my solo guitar recordings, but I like the wider soundfield of the spaced pair over the tighter sound of an XY array. Fran

Nice. Too bad you had no XY instead of ortf at that distance, to have a more centered sound. I love ortf for immersive soundscapes, nature recording, but prefer XY for closer sound sources. A comparison between Jecklin disk and regular AB for the omni's would also be great, but you can't do it all at once ;-) Thanks for sharing.
@homebrewedmusic Жыл бұрын
That comparison of J disk vs AB would be an excellent comparison. I sold off my disk because I'm understanding that Jecklin revised the specs to use a larger disk and wider spacing, but I haven't gotten around to constructing the new disk. Fran
