Regarding the absent footage, I regularly use Resilio (formerly BitTorrent) Sync to send files remotely to my system at home; it's free, just install it on the remote machine plus at least one that's always on, and you can sync large files securely with no third-party involved, and it works well if you just leave it running while you're busy doing other stuff. Another option is to use SD cards; the capacity on these is now so good you can fit a load of video on them, and they're easy to just put in a pocket to take with you. With a decently fast SD card you could take a copy from a hard-drive fairly quickly, so that way you can ship the drive *and* have a spare copy on your person. If you're feeling really fancy, by far the best option is to use ZFS; as long as both your remote and home machines have ZFS volumes, you can use ZFS' send command to synchronise data between them, even while you're still recording. ZFS has a tonne of other advantages, especially in terms of data integrity, and while ZFS send might seem daunting it's not actually all that complicated, and it's hands-down the best way to back stuff up.
