I used to train rats when I was younger. They’re absolutely brilliant. I would let them go when I went camping and call them when it was time to leave a day later. I had to wait about 30 minutes, but hey both would eventually climb up my legs to chill on my shoulder. Cool video

I have a very good reason to believe this study is right. Three years ago I had a female cat that gave birth to three kittens. I had always resolutely refused the cat from getting her litter into my bedroom where there was this piece of furniture that the cat really wanted to transfer her litter into for more privacy and comfort. One day I left the bedroom door open and the cat very cunningly and fast transferred her kittens to the small table. This table was directly near the headrest (less than three feet away. Since the mother cat was with her kittens I let her stay there until the next day when the mother cat had left the nest. During the quiet hours of the night, I noticed one thing. The mother cat continuously made a continuous low-frequency humming that was very difficult to perceive. I also observed that that during that entire period not a single kitten made even one sound yet I was used to having them squabble continuously over the best position to suckle. They had always pushed and meowed continuously.. I deduced this continuous humming was a way to instruct her kittens not to make any sound as she knew I didn't want her there. I had always removed her from there when she attempted to give birth or transfer her kittens to that place. Now I believe I know why other family cat's kittens freeze and hide when their mother detects danger e.g. when a mother leopard sees a Lion nearby. This and, maybe along with the freight or fight hormones a frightened cat emits maybe how mothers communicate with the kittens.

I have a special connection with rats! They are super intelligent. I used to battle them being under my house and in my yard but after doing lots of research on them I realized there’s no way to outsmart them. I’m not about to kill them. So we coexist they just don’t come in my house or under my house but they can live in my backyard. We have found common ground. Thank you very much for this video Anton he did an excellent job!

i had a little mouse crawl on my desk one day and say hello. until i moved and he was like OH FRICK and ran away. he eventually would come get the food in the same spot and stopped running away from me when i moved unless i got pretty close. anyways he decided to bring 12 of his friends and they start pooping on and chewing all the material items i covet as an inferior human... i was feeding them all for a while before that so it was very easy to just catch them and release them all in less than half a day. its pretty sad because i know its very likely they died out there. they weren't as smart as the pet rat i met when i was little but they had different personalities which was neat. and ultimately more depressing... also they actually stopped pooping and chewing in random areas after being fed for a while. they pooped in the same spot (mostly) and stopped chewing i guess because they had plenty of food. so i guess i actually had to catch and release simply because they just kept multiplying and it would've gotten way too out of hand.

Luddity is right. If they are not inside now, they will be soon. Get yourself a stray cat from an animal shelter, the one with half an ear, a missing eye and is generally angry. All you need to do is let him have space inside and he'll be nice to you, and he won't be able to turn down a stray rat

I am a very very empathetic and loving animal person. I care about them deeply and I've always had this sixth sense to understand them, their personalities and even communicate with them on levels most people wouldn't believe unless you saw it. I am very science minded and not into all that woo woo new age bull, and because of this I've literally been the one to name every pet I've owned or my family owned and develop the voice and means of talking to them. I've had 10 dogs, a few cats. And I've adored them all and been there for them until thier last breaths. So imagine my surprise when my recent girlfriend suggested getting pet rats about five years ago. She had said she'd had them before and told me they were amazing animals and somewhat reluctantly but curious, I agreed and we got a little eat boy and within about an hour of him coming home with us at just about 8 weeks old, my all time favorite pet named "little shoes" was the biggest part of my life for the next few years. I have never ever had a better pet and been closer to any of my pets, and it blew me away how intelligent, empathetic, and loving rats were. I ended up hearing certain strange vocalizations from him that I ended up realizing were almost a sort of attempt to "talk" and the first time I mimicked back to him like this he shit a long stare at me over his shoulder in amazement, and then darted over to me. We would "talk" to each other this way, and it really was strange how intricate and accurate it always seemed to be. I would attempt to rationalize it as personification but time after time I would have too much data to suggest it was a very real and very adorable thing. I wasn't aware that rats have such short lifespans and would probably have not gotten him had I known because losing pets is always such a taxing and life destroying event, and I will still break into tears anytime I walk past the pet aisle in any grocery store. He was my boy, he was the best boy, and I truly believe them to be animals that are sentient and that are capable of an afterlife just like humans are, due to thier self aware nature and intelligence and loving memory. If there is an afterlife, I almost have no doubt my boy will be waiting for me. I love him more than any kid I could ever have (don't want kids anyways) and to anyone thinking about getting let rats, my advice is to make sure and only get one at a time. If you get two brothers they will bind with each other and feel like a team against the humans, but if you only have the one they will actually be good little boys and think they are also human and will be the most rewarding pet you ever had. I'm not sure I could ever get another one though, because I only want my precious boy back. But who knows. They have a lot to teach us. Expect to hear a lot more about them in the future. RIP little shoes, I love you boy.

Rats are cool. I was once lost and out of fuel and a rat came to give me some. He even aided me to be more proficient in managing traveling:)

If rodents use ultrasonic sound to improve sniffing, they can still simultaneously use the same sound for communication. I believe they do both. This is a great discovery. As a gerbil owner, I am now even more impressed by how complex these tiny creatures are.

Why is adhd a trend today? People say ''I ate bread LMAO... MUST BE MY ADHD AY LMAO HEHEHEH HUHHI8HI... DID I MENTION I HAVE ADHD AND 9 OTHER MENTAL DISORDERS? I'M SO SPECIAL'' EDit: Never mind... I realized that ADHD is the scientific name for attention seeking.

This is incredibly fascinating for me because i'm completely blind and i've always been interested in the science of sensation. I can personally use a kind of echo location to navigate, but had no idea that usv has similar vibroacoustic properties for airborn particles like with the sand on the speaker analogy. I wonder if a similar technique to the plants using volital compound's to communicate with eachother that you went over in a previous video, could be used to study this phenominon further. In concert with high frequency sound cameras could tell us more about it I think anyways. Thanks for your wonderful and informative videos. Cheers :)

Well the wavelength of these squeakes is on the order of 2.5mm up to 25mm and rats occupy small spaces that, in natural settings, usually retain moisture, have organic shapes and acoustic dampening. If it involves tossing up molecules, then it’s possible this is an acquired behavior which they discover to be effective in sifting through scents. Moist environments keep scents pinned with Van Der Walls interactions & make particles heavier and less likely to move. The squeaks are noise modulation (a notch filter on noise). Also, a mouse can’t squeak and sniff at the same time. IF the purpose is to stir up scents, then some squeaks may help distinguish foreign smells recently laid into the environment from those that have been embedded into the environment for some time. Pheromones must inherently be molecules that support volatility. It may help them avoid predators in unfamiliar environments.

The tine creatures in Verner Vinge's sci fi classic "A Fire Upon The Deep" took ultrasound to a fantastical extreme, using it to create packs of consciousness melded mammals that shared experiences and thoughts. I wonder if he was inspired by those early papers about ultrasound social signals.

Sound=energy. Raised energy state means that more scent molecules are likely to be emitted and for them to "move" around more. There's also a faint possibility that the right frequency may be able to cause an echo from specific molecules. Worth noting, back in early 20th century, one explorer that went into the unknowns somewhere central Asia reported that the people in one small region used "music"(more like noise) to move stones. Also, back in the 90s (IIRC), there was a group of engineers investigating whether it would be commercially plausible to develop a way to conduct heavy lifting with soundwaves. Another group took that research and went with that as a probable way for making the building of the big pyramids drastically easier, but they could never figure out a way to make it work completely without any modern equipment to produce the soundwaves required, so eventually, as the first group could also never come up with a practical way to make it work, interest in the idea went away.
