Was a professional gunsmith for 30 years, specializing in handguns. Mechanically, the Richards and Mason conversion contains similar, yet altered parts as that of a Colt SAA and percussion design. The conversions require considerably more hand fitting. Having worked on contract with a university museum for restoration, repair, and preservation of 1,200 antique firearms, it ran from wheel locks to M1 rifles. There were some real challenges, but I couldn't think of a better way to improve my skills. Later, a customer brought me an 1860 Army R&M conversion in deplorable condition. He wanted it to be fully functional. It took over 60 hours of forging parts, machining, and hand fitting to restore it. It was one of the most tedious jobs I ever did. With all that said, I am pleased that you found an excellent gunsmith to rebuild your conversion revolvers. They are among the coolest sixguns ever made. A class unto themselves. 👍

I read what you have said and I’ve got a question myself. I’ve got a real 1851 colt conversion. I got a kit for reloading 38 rim fire from france and what are your thoughts on shooting it? The action works good and I had it looked over but I’m still skeptical
@anangryranger25 күн бұрын
@@ryanamanning01 To be brutally honest, original firearms are far often best left alone. Yes, it's intriguing to actually fire one today, but in reality it's best to find a reproduction and shoot it instead. The chances of destroying a valuable original would be a genuine loss simply because one wants to shoot an irreplaceable relic of the past. I highly recommend not to attempt to shoot this treasured weapon of the past just to say you did and run the risk of damaging it beyond repair.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I also enjoy using Uberti 1851 Navy Richard-Mason conversions as my main match revolvers, but have had progressively more frequent/bothersome hangups with them. I had similarly assumed it was just me and/or my black powder handloads exacerbating the inherent quirkiness of the platform... but now that I think about it and re-watch some of my footage, it is disproportionately more often the same one within the pair! I'll definitely look into Goons Gun Works to see if Mike can help troubleshoot and rehabilitate them too!

Loved the unique look of this pistol when I saw one in a local gun shop and bought it. Never ran reliably at all; based on research it was absolutely the arbor length issue. I sold it and now have a Colt SAA that I love.

Nice video! I come from the world of airsoft, 20 years of constantly tuning these unreliable replicas. I smelled and hooked up on black powder around 5 years ago, I shoot every week,even started competing in CAS in Hungary with percussion remingtons this year (thanks to Tucotheratt) I realized, these weapons out of the box are rarely suitable for hardcore work even Cartridge ones . Nowadays I still practice my same hobby.... Tuning guns. I love it!

However, my pard, Black RZR, has a pair and he runs the heck out of them (he was nipping at my heels the last time we shot together at the Wolverton Annual.
