Why theta plus phi is taken as constant, what does it mean when at 8:35 - 8:44 you said "we don't want any work done by torque acting on the dipole?" I don't get it. Please someone explain. Thank you.

Sir since we are taking partial derivatives.. shouldn't we take phi as constant?...and also I didn't understood why theta+ phi is constant..
@KapidhwajSonithB
@KapidhwajSonithB 3 жыл бұрын
I also have these Same two doubts 😕😕
@mr.rachetphilanthrophist601
@mr.rachetphilanthrophist601 2 жыл бұрын
He is basically taking ' negative gradient' of potential energy in polar cordinate system to find the force. And in it's formula partial derivatives come. So your first doubt is trivial. He is justifying how arc length traversed is rdtheta in angular direction to make it understand to +2 people but it is really a vector calculus part. It has come from mathematical definition of 'gradient (nebla) operator 'we use in vector calculus, in 1st year engineering. But Your second doubt is genuine though and i have same doubt as to why theta plus phi is taken as constant

For calculating the F(theta) component you have to do partial differentiation w.r.t theta only keeping phi const. So I don't think that the expression is correct.
@INSP_NITIN
@INSP_NITIN 4 жыл бұрын
Plz check the final results of three cases at the end of the video they won’t match if you keep phi constant , phi is variable here as well . Let me know if the final results derived here mismatch with any other dipole problem , will varify again in that case .
@jobbyjoseph3641
@jobbyjoseph3641 3 жыл бұрын
@@INSP_NITIN Sir I have a Doubt about the validity of the theta (cap) formula... Let's just take the second case itself ..here P2 is placed along theta (cap) and P1's electric field at the location of P2 is along r (cap) ...hence dot product of P2 and electric field due to P1 is zero....so potential energy is also zero...So shouldn't force be zero.....But for the second case if we plug in the values of theta and phi in your formulas r (cap) gives zero force but theta(cap) gives non zero force?? Please resolve this SIR......
@INSP_NITIN
@INSP_NITIN 3 жыл бұрын
@@jobbyjoseph3641 sorry dear this is not how you calculate for , just differentiating a constant isn’t a right approach . It’s like for a variable potential function if you calculate potential energy at a point by putting the values and getting a constant and then differentiation gives zero . Results and approach both are fine in the problem .
