So here is my cheap in-frame rebuild of my Jeep 4.0 and what I did.
Just a reminder THIS IS NOT THE RIGHT WAY but if you are careful you can get away with it.

You can't get all the honing dust out of a cylinder by using the same brush over and over that got dirtied up with the first cleaning pass. You need a bucket of hot soapy water to spin the brush in between cleanings to wash the honing dust off of the bristles. Using a bucket of hot soapy water or a couple gallons of kerosene in the bucket with a good spin between of the brush in the bucket between each clean and you'll find by your third wipe down the wiping cloth will be clean. You kept introducing some honing dust back into the cylinders with each attempt to clean the cylinders since you used a dirty brush each time. Good video....good narrative. Very informative.

The brush was only used to get the grit out of cross hatches but yes I could of done better of cleaning the block out. I was short on time so I did the best I had with this band aid fix. You do have better ways to clean the block I will try in the future. Thanks for that.

@@TEDDAV64 short on time? Would have been faster to clean the brush afterwards. Could've done all cylinders in same amount of time as it took for 1

kerosene doesn’t work. It’s not a surfactant. It may solvent some oils but soil components in a solvent continue flocculation and mechanical association with the surfaces. A bucket of hot soapy water would have worked though

I'm in the same boat as you are, I don't understand why you keep hating on not removing those whole motor. I do agree it's by the book to remove the entire engine out but some of us don't have time or help or place to work or funds to replace all parts, and not all parts need to be replaced I'm going to do rings, Hon, and value job I'm burning massive oil and I need a car bad for work I have no time to remove it. I've changed stems nothing worked. Yes blue smoke when I hit gas. I enjoy your video and I don't think your doing anything wrong here at all.

Lol dirty brush is correct. Also dawn dish soap works wonders on final clean for metal. Use all the brake clean and triclorethelane u want and dawn will still make it appear new when you already thought it looked new.

Your Jeep's factory motor mount was fine, the gap you pointed out is how it is made. The rubber was still in great shape, it wasn't even close to failing with a stock engine.
@DatKogasa
@DatKogasa 7 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you may have figured out, or perhaps not. The motor mount you removed was still in good condition, the gap you pointed out is there from factory and only serves to keep the engine from leaving the engine bay if the rubber gave out, the rubber is not molded to the top of the bracket on the mount. Either way the upgrade is a better one anyway.

During the cleaning process of the cylinders, I would think it a good idea to spray the brush off between wipes as well so as not to re- deposit the dirt back on to where you just wiped.

Cheap mineral spirits works for cleaning cylinders & engine parts. Plus it's not water based & won't cause rust. Get a cheap solvent gun or use a spray bottle if you don't have a air compression. Great video.

I've done 3 motors in frame, and never used a scrubber brush. Didn't lose rings in 5k ( 1 on a Toyota was done in 2003 and it's still on the road) but may add a brush scrub if I end up doing it again.

Dam dam dam! I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 limited. Purchased by a Jeep guy in 2015, had over 100 thousand miles but seemed to be in relatively good condition inside & out. Early 2016 I started "burning oil" on and off. Being a single mom workin my ass off livin in Oside, Ca. I couldnt afford to do anything as of yet so reg mech said just keep up on oil changes and chk oil everyday. Grant u I know nothin about workin on vehicles....not that Im a dummy but my job takes all my time. So "I do what most do, save every penny and hand it over to a mechanic when I can". So I did, after $1,000. and 3wks later one night after drivin all day & "no problems", me & my son stop to eat maybe 30mins, start the Jeep and outta nowhere sounds like my dam engine has rocks in it! Sounded like HELL! Thought omg wth?!. Left it in his work parking lot, next morning. First thing I chk my fuilds. And NO FLIPPIN OIL! I thought wth? Why? No oil light ever came on had no problems since they did the work not to mention an oil change June29th of '17 and now everyone other than one mechanic that is totally too busy and movin away soon said "Oh man, u blew a rod, ur engine is toast". While the first dude that stopped by and listened to it said...."I know it sounds like shit, but in my opinion, it does not sound internal to me....sounds like ur spark plugs, not that somethin else isnt goin on but, as bad as it sounds I dont think its a rod or a timing chain. So anyway now Im flippin broke after payin out a thousand to my mechanic I "did go to, past tense", everyone else says its gonna cost u $$$ big and now my Jeep I love sits in my sons job parkinglot. And theres nothin I can do. We have a 2008 Mits Lancer I bought my daughter a few yrs back that she didn't treat to well with multiple things wrong with it....but atleast for now it runs. My only transpo for work. I work 7days a wk....it needs a few things done, well I be goddam if I EVER TRUST ANOTHER SO CALLED MECHANIC! I told my son, put ur learning cap on cause WE'RE DOIN THIS OURSELVES! 9pm at night, made my son help me do my first oil change, well shit.....it still has a dam leak, so next to do, the spark plugs....then I notice the crankshaft is totally worn out and can go out at any time. More money!😂 One nearly bald tire.....and limited funds. Somehow some way I'll do it all my goddam self, lol!!! Yeah so I believe that I might have the same issue with my Jeep, its so sad....I miss my Jeep and I swear Im goin thru seperation anxiety 4 real. I wish so badly I had the time & money to do what ur doin....and ofcoarse yrs of knowedge. I really appreciate the time u put into makin ur videos. Although Id probably never be able to learn or do somethin like that at 53yrs of age, I appreciate the hell outta what u posted. Hey knowledge is power right? Also I think its BULLSHIT that Dodge posts an article about failed or shitty parts "after the fact", its basically like admitting they sold f@%kin LEMONS!!!!! So pissed about that. Anyway so if there happens to be ANYONE near my area, has knowledge and "time on their hands" & maybe wants a Jeep for study or can help me out, please respond Peace out✌

First off, whatever you said about knowing engines? You ain’t too good at that man. That fram oil filter is the reason your crank isn’t in the best shape. Never run fram. Not even on a fuckin lawnmower. I could make a better oil filter out of rocks ffs. Going cheap on regular maintenance is just expensive in the long run.
