This has to be among the easiest head gasket replacements I've ever seen
@SupramanTRD3 ай бұрын
You have the pushrod design to thank for that. No timing components on the head. Even easier as an inline 6
@wyattandwill12Ай бұрын
@@SupramanTRDYep I’ve done a GM L82 3100 (it’s what would have been in a 97-99 Malibu) and it’s annoying having to worry about the lower intake manifold. With an inline 6 that’s also a pushrod design (the GM car was too tho), it’s a much easier job than it could be. Plus for me, I’m pulling the drivetrain to do mine because I have a bunch of other things I need to do (flex plate, timing chain, might as well do the FMS, extracting some damaged fasteners, etc). That’ll make the job a lot easier too 👍🏻

Stuck at home because of COVID-19. Been meaning to do this for a while but haven’t ever gotten around to it. I guess now that I have nothing else to do, this will be the best time to change out my leaking head gasket. I don’t think I could do it without watching this video. My head bolts are the 12-point bolts, though, and I’m afraid I might strip them because they are torqued down so tight. The ones in the vid are 6 point.

@wolfpackman928 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video guys! Aside from a library loaned Chiltons (I'm as cheap as you, lol) to get all the torque specs your video and a bunch of tools were all I used to get an XJ with a badly blown head gasket back on the road. Now to replace those warn out CVs up front. For reference, the quote from a local shop was $1300 for parts and labor and I did it for $200. Would have been a bit less but we broke a temp sensor getting the wires disconnected and took the opportunity to replace a very warn bearing on the idler pulley. No Tommy, I'm not sending you the savings to blow on PBR.

2 things i would do differently 1) instead of Teflon tape id use a thread sealant. Liquid or jell like. The tape can give the wrong torque on bolt what may seam to be right but the bolt has too much resistance. 2) sparkplugs, they are NGK in video. They work. But wrong temp rating. And these 4.0s just run champion or autolite better. I wouldn't put anything else in. Besides that great job! Loved it. Very good at focusing on key points of the process that most people question there first time doing a head gasket.

dang. you make it look easy. iv'e got a question guys... wouldnt the teflon wrapped bolt eventually shagg it's teflon wrapping causing little bits of teflon circulating around the cooling ducts and veins? also, clyde looks like he's got some hell of a lot of experience or formal training. only the top notch mechanics i know use the cardboard trick. and those are the ones with the mild O.C.D and they work neat lol
@PabstBoys8 жыл бұрын
The teflon gets locked in the threads and has nowhere to go in there. It is important that you don't over do it and put the teflon all the way up the threads or you might get the issues you talked about. Yeah, I (Clyde) am an automotive technician by day, and have been working in the trades for a long time. You're right. A healthy dose of O.C.D. will get you far if you wanna be good at your job.. Awesome video guys! Easy sub after that video. I'm thinking of swapping out the head on my 2000 xj with a new one from Clearwater cylinder heads since they make a thicker casting than the 0331 stock version and I have to replace the head gasket anyway. My question is, what other items would it be best to replace while i'm that deep in her? I'm figuring: head head gasket valve cover gasket any other gaskets or items like water pump or thermostat or anything else i'm not thinking of? Thanks for the help!
@wayloncourvell67196 жыл бұрын
Im buying a 2001 XJ and plan to replace the 0331 as well. Did you replace anything else beyond head, head gasket. Valve cover gasket?
@tomd19396 жыл бұрын
If it were me doing the job, I would replace any gasket that gets removed while doing the job. In most cases the gaskets are cheap compared to the time it takes to replace it if you were to get back into the engine. And I know it ups the cost considerably, but if you're that far into the engine, now would be a perfect time to upgrade the stock exhaust manifold to a high flow (possibly ceramic coated for heat transfer) headers.

hopefully I can get a reply but I just did a head gasket change and got my head rebuilt along with new spark plugs and cap and rotor also spark plug wires. after putting the jeep back together she runs rough the motor shakes in gear and a little in park it seems to have low idle but when you drive it you have to push the gas to the floor to have even move forward. anyways I've noticed after you leave it running alight smoke comes out of the oil dipstick it didn't do it before so I'm wondering if I did something wrong just lost on what to do next please help.
