Was the head cracked, or was it just the gasket?
It was, in fact, both! The machine shop confirmed the original 0331 head was cracked all the way through, but rather oddly, it cracked between a cooling jacket and cylinder 4's combustion chamber.

Bro, always love your content.. did this job on my 97 last year with the help of my brother-in-law, who is a professional mechanic. All the other jeep head videos carry on about the rocker arms needing to be torqued wile on TDC for each cylinder.. this is absolutely not required as the valves are self-adjusting. Just torque em to spec and call it good.

Weaver Auto's machine shop in Suck City only charged me around $230 to hot tank, pressure test, and machine a donor TUPY for my '00. Was so much cheaper than a Clearwater head. Clearwater usually has a 6-10 week lead time unless you pay them $$$$ extra. Sometimes RockAuto has heads ready to ship with no core fee.

The head can have a very small crack and cause coolant loss slowly and not change the oil color. Seen it before

Wish I had this vid when I did the head and gasket! You forgot to tell them not to follow in my foot step, because you don’t want head bolts at 130 ft lbs… so far running fine tho so if anyone sees this after making a mistake, the 4.0 just doesn’t care ig. Time will tell

When you're doing the head bolts, do you hit them with any kind of PB blaster? I'm sketched out to crank the bolts out. I bought new ones, about to tackle this tomorrow.
@WAEMIDIV
@WAEMIDIV 5 күн бұрын
@@MaybachDay I didn't use any PB, just bust those bolts free with the brute force of a breaker bar, they'll come out. I guess PB wouldn't hurt anything if you really wanted to use some

What kind of oil do you put in your XJ diesel oil or conventional gasoline oil and do you really need zinc in your oil

Hey Boss, I have a 99 XJ all put back together and when I start it, it's like someone is flooring the gas causing the car to go at max rpm. Any Idea what could be the problem? I drained the fuel rail and tried again and the same RPM problem happened again. I followed your video and come to find out I did even need to take the head off as I had a hole in an expansion plug on the block and that's where I was leaking coolant. was wondering if you would be able to answer a question for me?
@WAEMIDIV
@WAEMIDIV 13 күн бұрын
@@cjmcq1117 sounds like a major vacuum leak, like the intake isn't seated properly. Too much air is getting into the engine somehow. Maybe you broke a vacuum line or the manifold was not properly torqued. I recommend watching the manifold video

@WAEMIDIV I watched your manifold video and went through and took it off and careful reassembled the manifold and up. I put heavy duty tape on the ends of all of my vacuum line and it runs great now! Thank you very much. The only problem I’m having now is coolant leaking from the radiator cap. I let the jeep run until reaching 210 and cool down, filling up coolant until I used all 3 gallons. I took it for a test drive and parked it, letting it run for a little and I had coolant leaking from a brand new radiator cap. Any idea why this would be?
@cjmcq1117
@cjmcq1117 6 күн бұрын
@@WAEMIDIVI ended up watching your video and it helped! I ended up taking everything apart and reassembling it. I also taped the end of the vacuum lines just to be sure and it fired right up. I do have 1 problem with coolant coming out of the radiator cap. Would you have any idea what that could be? I was thinking that the over flow line could be jammed. Thanks again!
