You need to spot weld the notch and then grind it down. I have to do the same thing on mine - my symptom is that occasionally on a strong brake press they will catch and I'll swerve to one side - fun! Changing my rotor, caliper, pads, brake fluid, and greasing the knuckle helped alot though

Have same issue on my 98. Put on new calipers and replaced original flexible lines. Also tested brake fluid. It was on the high side for water content. Drained and replaced. I think when I replaced calipers 3 years ago I left the cap off the master for a few days which probably led to the high water content. Live in the Southeast so it is humid. Will see.

Not sure about the grinding. It will create an uneven rust point and catch again. Had the exact same.issue years ago. Used JB weld , high temperature. You sand it back flush. Worked perfectly, never had issues after. Ideal is spot welding, but JB is fine if you are not setup for welding. Just wait 24 hours for full hardness before using.

I thought about that but figured it would be a desperate attempt that would not work, but now I see it worked for you. Great, I'll give it a try. Appreciate the post you made. Did you use the two part syringe or the putty stick ?

One thing to add: Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning that is absorbs water. That in itself will make brakes fade, grab, and stick! Change that fluid out, if it has been more than two years!!!

Oh and that caliper was starting to seize. That issue will come back and you will need to rebuild or replace those calipers. Calipers should be replaced as a matched set. That's how I do it anyway. I'd be real careful adding grease in places where it can collect grit that can then wear out components. Fun times. I'd take that rain off your hands. Going to be 100 degrees today here.

4x4Scout, I also do the same, change both calipers out, like you said " MATCHED SET ". GREAT ADVICE, SIR. If I change a wheel bearing on one side, BOTH SIDES GET NEW WHEEL BEARINGS, SAME WITH U-JOINTS OR BRAKE HOSE'S. It's a PITA BUT NOW I KNOW WHAT I HAVE NOT WAITING FOR OTHER SIDE TOO GO OUT. Keep the good parts for spares in case of an emergency on the trail.

You should not grind anything, but should have spot welded the notch and grinder it down to its original specs
@JeepSolid
@JeepSolid 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Spot welding would probably have been better

I would have at least spun the wheel a few times & checked IF IT WAS BINDING. That caliper will eventually GO BYE BYE, HOW LONG ? Change both sides when it does, as 4x4 Scout suggested below, GREAT ADVICE THAT I LIVE BY. I KNOW THIS FROM EXPERIENCE ESPECIALLY WITH OWNING JEEP'S. I would also change the brake fluid out, it's probably burnt. I do mine every 3 years just as regular MAINT.

I also agree with the other comment: You never grind on anything that is a mechanical connection like that. File a bit maybe, but never grind!
@JeepSolid

Yeah. Spot welding may have been better, but it wasn’t the whole surface. Just the edge. So I think it’ll be fine. Spot weld next time. 👍🏼

Only curious, would spraying the caliper piston with brake cleaner help? I'm having the same issue with my 94 YJ and I took notes from your video. I will get the grease & do this Saturday. Thanks for the video.

Still working great. Didn't change the knuckle, although some viewers mentioned it would be a good idea to fill the gap worth weld, then grind it smooth. I'd probably do that next time.

You should never have to add brake fluid. Low brake fluid simply means you have worn brakes. Adding fluid just causes problems later.

Hey Dale you had this problem before and thought you would fix this with a spot weld on the notch. Seems redundant to make a video of this and need to be corrected. Next time take a big screw driver with you and pull over and loosen the stuck caliper.
