Jeep Camping Gone Wrong In Winter!

Workshop to Wilderness

5 ай бұрын

This winter Jeep camp was meant to be a couple of nights and a few days solo snow wheeling in deep snow and soaking up some time in the wilderness. Unfortunately it was cut short by some challenging conditions in the form of compacted snowdrifts, a broken U joint and a bad storm with record high winds that almost took my tent off at one stage.
Floatation was very difficult with my setup, especially with the granular sugar snow underneath the snow pack.
In my stupidity I neglected to change the cheap U joints on the front chromoly shafts, and I didn't make sure I had spares with me prior to going out. So a relatively simple fix in the field turned into more than It should of. You live and learn.
I cut my losses on this one and returned home early to repair the Jeep and get back out when the storm has passed. Despite the issues it was a good outing and its always nice to be humbled by these things and have an excuse to upgrade the Jeep!
Thanks for watching.

Totally outrageous how you managed to stay so cool and on top of that decided to stay for the night. I would have given in and head home instead. Now you know, when you built that front axle you should have used quality products from the beginning (quality chromoly u-joints and shafts) taking into consideration that you drive through some deep snow pretty often. Stay positive - tomorrow is another day!

I feel your pain! I refuse to use anything other than Spicer U Joints or stronger only! Right now I am using Yukon Extreme Hardcore U Joints in chrome moly axle shafts and I have two spare complete shafts with Super Joints that have quite a few hours on them. The Yukon extreme joints are very strong, but don't have needle bearings, so they shouldn't be driven at highway speeds. They are greased with anti seize aluminum grease and each cap is greased individually. I also have a Yukon (Warn) free wheel kit with Yukon hardcore hubs so that in the event of breakage I can ulock the hubs. Love your videos! I am waiting for some fresh snow to go play in, our winter has been pretty dry so far. Some snow coming tonight.

I had the same experience with my wrangler. I ran 35" super swampers with dual lockers and stock axles and joints, my thinking was it's better the joints are the weak link rather then the ring and pinion. Needless to say I got very fast at changing axles just make sure to keep the unit bearings lubed so they don't seize in the knuckle and carry pre assembled axle assemblies for both sides, kinda surprised you didn't already but live and learn.
@WorkshoptoWilderness

I use to carry two full axles, then it went down to two stub shafts, then it went down to a single front U joint. I think the more trips I did and the more I pushed the jeep I just got complacent with nothing braking. I've been realigned Thanks for watching

Pretty gutsy moves Mike. Pushing our limits at least lets us know how far to test them the next time and when to call it quits. Glad your friend was available to help plow you out. I was surprised that you decided to spend the night out given the vehicle damage since one doesn't always know what the weather might do. Hats off to you for making the best of a bad situation! Good luck with the repairs--hope they go well back at the home shop.

in hindsight it was stupid to try and drive open ground given the winds we have had. The snow was very different once I got into that area. I thought I might as well make the best of it given the circumstances, but it seems the gods didn't agree. Thanks for watching.

Well that didn’t go as planned Mike! But you can’t find the jeeps limits without testing it! A lot of the Jeep guys over here Mike use spicer u joint. But they also put a non greaseable one in the short side axle shaft. And a greaseable one in the long axle shaft side. That way the long axle shaft u joint fails and not the shaft itself inside the diff. If you had the crazy expensive $1500 CAD RCV shafts. Well they don’t break. But your ring and pinion probably would. So in a way it’s a good thing having a known weak spot. Especially considering it’s a D30 with 35” tires. I have to say Mike your rear LSD is working well! And honestly In most of the shots both front wheels are spinning too. So I’m not sure a front locker/traction aid is going to make a ton of difference. A front locker might help stop sudden loads on the U joints when they grab traction. I’ve also been testing my Detroit truetrac’s some more Mike. So I have found if one of the tires is on pure ice. They basically are no better than an open diff. The wheel on ice just spins. But if you stop the spin with brake pedal and then hold the brake lightly and apply the gas then both wheels start spinning and off you go. At first I was a bit disappointed. But I now understand that the way the diffs behaviour on pure ice is a good thing! It’s why they are somewhat safe to drive on the road. You dont get the axle suddenly locking up if one tire suddenly gets a patch of ice on the highway. A clutch type lsd grabs harder for example. And an auto locker is downright dangerous in that scenario. Another thing I’ve noticed is when the diff fluid is cold. The jeep feels slow. And there is more torque steer feedback through the steering wheel when in 4H and the diffs are cold. Once the diff fluid is warmed up the torque steer all but disappears! So overall I’m now extremely happy with my truetrac’s front and rear. I’ve floored the Jeep a few times on ice at 50-60kph. And it does nothing crazy or unpredictable. I’ve also done this when one side of the Jeep is on ice and the other side isn’t. No issues. No switches to think about. No airlines. They just took a bit of getting used too at first. Truetrac’s front and rear work very well on my xj. Because like yours Mike. It has tons of flex front and rear. It’s very hard to get a tire off the ground. Unless it’s an extreme situation. And then I just ride the brake pedal to make the diffs lock up. But I wouldn’t recommend a truetrac to anyone who has poor wheel travel in the front. Like an IfS rig. A truetrac would be a poor choice. A full locker would work better. Anyways I know you are getting a selectable e locker for your front axle. But if that rear LSD wears out. Consider a truetrac. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the feedback on the truetracks! That's interesting about the brake peddle trick, much like the rear axle and handbrake on an open diff. Its good to know and get some feedback from real world testing. A lunchbox is probably death on the roads I drive on as it will lock up and send me into the ditch. My rear has a tendency to drift also. Thanks for the tips on the U joint placement on the front. I will try that and see how it goes. I will rebuild the chromoly's and build up two spares just in case. My Rear LSD seems to work very well which is probabaly what's carrying my rig through these situations. The front I will put a selectable in like an E locker and hopefully that will stop the shock load on the joints and make it more consistent like the rear. Thanks for watching and for the all the information!

The way your right front tire was grabbing and losing grip, grabbing and losing grip in those last few seconds right before breaking. That's what did it. That torque shock. Your wheels were straight so frankly I would never have guessed that would be enough to break the ujoint. Do you have a LSD in the front? Perhaps its wearing out or slipping which was causing that right front to grab and slip and grab and slip.
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness 5 ай бұрын
I watched that on the video. Its an open diff but the chains kind of make it simulate traction control as one side grips, slips then transfers to the other side. Its strange but probabaly not good for the system because of the shock load. A locker might keep that load consistent which should eliminate that jolting. My rear has an LSD which seems to behave better as the wheels turn consistently. Thanks for watching

I feel like I break a u joint every time I put my jeep in 4 low. Those 1310 size joints are really unhappy with 35s and lower tire pressure. May be time for a Dana 44 and RCVs one of these days. Not sure if you can even get them in Northern Europe!

Getting some 5-760X replacements would help a lot I think, or like you say RCVs. The dana 30 ring and pinion would be next to go then. A 44 and some RCV's would be a nice upgrade around here. Thanks for watching.

Any plans to run a bigger snow tire? Maybe with some adjustable bumpstops you could fit a bigger floatable tire. Just for the snow. I've done some snow wheeling in Oregon, United States. And there was a guy with a modest built "hilux" that would normally run 35s but when it snowed he could fit 40s that were very wide. He was riding on the bumpstops but with the extremely low air pressure and soft snow you could even tell.

I have a set of 40s at home. I just need 17" rims to test them out. I personally think its impossible for me to run them on my dana 30 front end. The nokian hakkapeliitta floatation tires are a 44" tire but much lighter than anything standard, so they would work better. It's the price that's the hard part. I'm keeping my ears to the ground for a dana 44 or stronger front end.

Mike if you were to install some type of lockers, what would you go with? I’ve always wanted selectable air or elockers front and rear like a rubicon but that would cost more than my entire rig. Hard to justify? Maybe not?
@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness 4 ай бұрын
Well, air would fail in this climate because the small diameter air lines can build up condensation and freeze. So I think an E locker is the safest bet for me. It has to be selectable, or I would lose control on the main roads and crash. My problem is my dana 30. It's just not worth locking with anything expensive, and everything cheap will be dangerous on the ice roads. There are also OX lockers that are activated by cables. They are solid and the most desirable for me. Getting them in Sweden is another story.

@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness 5 ай бұрын
I use VHT Quick Coat. It's like a decent rattle can paint that's mimics a kind of enamel finish. It's obviously not as strong as powder coat or enamel, but it's good for what it is. There are other types of VHT for high temperatures and ones you oven bake. I've not had much luck with them as they end up too brittle. This quick coat is nice as it has a slight degree of flexibility to it and seems to deal with abrasion and impacts okay. I hit it with my shovel a few times on this recovery and obviously chipped the paint, but It can be touched up very quickly. The thing to remember with it is, lots of very light coats 10 minutes between them, or it will drip badly.

@WorkshoptoWilderness
@WorkshoptoWilderness 5 ай бұрын
The total weight with a full tank is about 2330kg. This is weighed on a full size scale. Its not crazy heavy in the overland world, but its heavy for an XJ. I think my Jeep is at its upper end for its weight and I don't plan on making it any heavier other than some skid plates here and there. Its geared to 4.88 so I don't suffer with power loss, but in these situations dropping 300 + kg might actually make a difference. I don't really know what I can do though as I love the build and it works well. I guess I could do a test video, take off the tent, drawer system, spare seats, tire carrier and spare tire, all the camping gear and go snow wheeling and see it its any different. Thanks for watching

You definitely have Bigfoot gonads on you! The big question that everyone watching this should ask themselves, would I do this. Knowing that you have 4 days of supplies, shelter, the knowledge to survive and even walk out makes it doable, but not for the faint hearted. I'm actually disappointed that you had GSM coverage and got help, I would rather have watched another hour of you snowshoeing it out - suffering brings views you know. BTW, I'm not convinced that was Pancake Mix on your trousers as I'm sure I caught a frame you didn't manage to edit out of your favourite Kays Catalogue pages. Don't talk too technical, you lost me at times and that thingy is known to me as a CIRCLIP. 👍

Haha thanks, this isn't a reality TV show. I understand suffering is fun to watch for some people, but I will do what's best for me, not the views. If the parts were at home, I would have hiked out, but there's no point hiking just for fake drama. You got me, Bigfoot stopped by and filled that bottle up with "pancake mix". I doubt that too many would want to do it. Some probably find it pointless. I personally enjoy the challenge and being out regardless. Preparation covers the bases so situations like that are pretty chill. I will talk technical as much as I like, by the way. Don't tell me how to talk, and thanks for watching.

@@WorkshoptoWilderness Thanks for the reply, I think. There was NO intended malice in my comment however/which way, I was trying to portray that I'd watch another hour of you overcoming problems happily. My point on the technical jargon element is that this is a car camping video and not a workshop video, I can't learn if I don't understand and it seems that we live in a society where everyone gets offended at the slightest misinterpretation of a comment. It is your channel and you can do what you like, but there was no need for the slap at the end. I would say female dog slap but then it will go into your review box. Have a nice day and I hope Bigfoot does you dry to express how I feel right now. 😊

Have you considered a... Snowmobile? Or a tracked vehicle, because you really are torturing that thing with every trip! Also, I can't quite figure out how you get away with all this. The law in Sweden does not allow for much wiggle-room when it comes to off-roading. If there is enough snow that the vehicle won't damage the ground below, it's fine. But that's really about it. I don't even think we're allowed to use old tractor roads with regular vehicles, altho that rule I kind of tend to ignore. It makes no sense that huge forestry equipment can be hauled in and out on such roads not to mention the vehicles that used them before, yet my ATV that barely leaves a mark is not allowed? Yeah I ain't buying it.

I have a snow mobile, but I enjoy the challenge of going out in the jeep and camping. Admittedly, this was a stupid choice of road, and I normally avoid anything too deep. It's legal for me to drive roads like this with snow or no snow. This is not classified as offloading because im always on a road. If the boom is down, then I don't drive them, and if it is spring and the roads are wet, then I don't drive them because it leaves deep rutts and damages the track. There are a few of us locally that do this, a couple of swedes, one Dutch guy, and me. But obviously, a snowmobile is a better choice, but not really why we do it. Thanks for watching
