I have that same Mitsubishi starter on my 99. Still works great. The slow crank could be from the worn cables and battery? Jeep cables upgrade made it crank much smoother. My starter has about 220k in it. ☺️

Had a broken door check on Bumble Jeep when I got her 1/18. Hinges were toast as well. Got a used door check from a local salvage yard, welded the hinges and good for now. But the used door check pops and cracks no matter how much WD-40 or white lithium grease I spray on it. The price on new door checks are crazy, even from Rock Auto. ($37+), so waiting for the snow to melt to grab a passenger side check from another yard that has plenty of Cherokees. Maybe I'll grab some spares to share. God bless, stay well.

We have snow in greater Seattle area, due to sudden cold storm. It’s very rare for us to get snow, and it’s hit over 8 inches. But my 93 xj stick shift with NP 231 is handling it like a boss. :). She just got nilight fog lights and new alarm for Valentine’s Day. It’s interesting to see how the newer Cherokee connections are for starter. And I totally agree that Optima has gone to crap. Also, do a voltage drop test on the battery cables to see if corrosion had built up inside and underneath the cable insulation. You can also cut the insulation open in a couple of places and see if the wire has turned green with corrosion. In my younger days, I have replaced the battery and starter to find out I still had the same problem with bad cables.
@ProjectDanH3 жыл бұрын
Excellent tip! I plan on replacing the cables soon

Another good test to do is a Parasitic draw test (Current Draw) to see if the battery is being pulled down slowly by current draw when you are away from the vehicle.

This video is awesome and so helpful!!!I bought my first 2000 xj a couple of months ago. But im stumped. I had dismounted my starter in order to take my oil pan out. I placed the starter on top of the oil filter so as to not pull the wires. But when i bolted the starter back on and went to connect my battery it started to spark real bad and it tried to turn over. When i unplugged the cable from the starter and reconnected the battery it didnt spark. I took it to autozone to test and they said the starter was fine. None of my connections are frayed or touching or even corroded. I have no idea what to do. Any suggestions. Thank you!
@ProjectDanH3 ай бұрын
Pull the starter relay until it's installed.. once it's installed and put the starter relay back in and see what happens. It immediately starts when you put the relay back in it could be something up with the ignition
@LNDM-m9z2 ай бұрын
@@ProjectDanHThanks so much. Did as advised and it still cranked. Took me like two days of testing the starter and almost buying a new starter to realize that it was simply the freaking Bolts! The previous owner put two long bolt instead of the long one on the bottom and shorter on top. So when i would tightened the old bolts on it would short the starter on the inside. Got the correct bolts and now no issues.

It shouldn’t really make a difference for gasoline engines. You mostly see that on diesel engines to warm up the glow plugs for a cold start.
