Got sick of waiting on Jeep to release the mythical Mopar trailer brake controller. So, I went aftermarket. Here's a look.

At the end of the video, where I talk about the dash lighting up like a Christmas tree, here's a little extra info: The wiring harness that goes from the main control box to the vehicle wiring connection under the dash should have a diode inline to prevent feedback in the brake circuit. The idea is to prevent issues when you hit the button without a trailer connected, and to prevent pulsing of your trailer brakes with the hazard lights on, etc. etc. This harness I used does have the diode pre-installed and my issues have not returned since initial start-up. All is well now. I can push the knob in for manual over-ride, turn the dial up and down, whatever I want and nothing odd happens. I just had a quirky initial start-up after installation and now it's gone. If you use hard wiring technique, or if you use a different plug and play harness that doesn't have the diode installed in the wiring, you may have some random issues with feedback from the brake signal. This could cause random weird issues possibly. If you use the harness I showed in this video, you should be fine.

Thanks for the video. So the TPH-020 with the 2 wires switched is the correct harness with the diode?

Good job on this video! I happen to be the guy in Adelaide, Australia that designs the plug-and-play harnesses for the Tow Pro. Just a little FYI: the white plastic terminal lock does not need to be completely removed from the connector housing to allow the swapping of the BLUE and BLACK wires - you only need to release it with your thumb nail and then reach through the terminal lock with a small flat blade screwdriver to release each of the two terminals while gently pulling their respective wires. Also, please note that if you use a harness with a diode inline on the red wire (as TPH-020 does), then your override function (that is when you press the button on the remote head without pressing the brake pedal) will activate the trailer brakes but will NOT illuminate the trailer stop lamps. This is a legislated requirement in California, and good idea everywhere. There are a few way to achieve this, but none are super easy - yet (I'm working on it!) Kind Regards from Oz, Sam.

Great information. Thanks! This seems like a great product so far and I can't wait until spring so I can try it out. I guess you guys are in the middle of summer there, but up here it's COLD.

I have the same harness that needs to switch the blue and black wire. Came off my Cherokee. Makes me nervous changing those. Can you expand on what that is doing please?

Great Video, I assume the same tricks will work on the JL? Everything looks exactly the same.

Two things, the cover doesn't fit back on where you say to mount it and I switched the blue and black wires like you said and put it all together and my trailer locked up when I hit the brakes the first time. I contacted redarc and they helped me diagnose that in fact the wires do not need to be switched and it worked perfect.

Thank you for venturing off into the unknown and working thru the trials and tribulations of these sorts of things. Saving us from the missteps. You have helped me with my Gladiator Sport Build. I am appreciative of your efforts and passion.

I know I am only like 2 years too late... I just got my TPH-020 today. My wires are already opposite of yours as shown, blue on right, black on left. Was your harness already swapped when you show it? Also another commenter advised swapping wasn't needed. Is there any new info? Thanks!

Thanks for finding about the only place the control dial will go that makes any sense. I looked everywhere and couldn’t find another spot one could see where it would fit.

Thanks for the video! That will help me a bunch, I was going to put the mopar controller on mine. Luckilly, when I went to the dealer they caught that it doesn't work with a manual trans. So I'm going to instal this one as soon as it shows up from etrailer.

I just ordered mine and it came in today. Now the Harness has 2019 current jeep wrangler JL, 2020 Jeep Gladiator on the OEM wiring harness. SO I shouldn't need to switch those 2 wires like in the beginning of video? Thanks in advance....

Can I ask for the full part numbers required for the control unit and the Ram adapter needed for the install. Just want to make sure I’m ordering the right components. Returns would be costly from Canada I’m sure! Thanks for all your videos they have helped tremendously.

Tekonsha adapter harness 3073-P is the one that works with the Redarc system that has a diode built into it to keep it doing that goofy Christmas tree lighting ceremony. It's used in conjunction with Redarc Tekonsha adapter harness 331-TPH-017. Nice video sir. I think I am going to mount mine where the power port is like some have done out there on the Gladiator forums. Also giving up on Dodge to finish their controller.
@4-LOW4 жыл бұрын
I saw that, but it would have doubled the cost. Instead, I used the adapter in this video which does also have the diode built in and the funky dash issue never has reappeared since initial start-up. Thanks!

Thank you for this helpful video. I am getting ready to install a brake controller next week. I know this comment is a couple months after your video but I found in my research that you can purchase a brake controller for the 2019 Wrangler on etrailer and they have several controllers that comes with the correct wiring harness for the Gladiator. Again, thank you for the step by step video.

Very good video. I think I’m sold on which controller I’m getting it ok am tired of waiting for the oem one. Plus the oem one is a major pain to install from one video I watched. I wish I could put a picture but I installed mine just under the speaker. There is even a looped piece of metal that will help protect it. Thanks for the video again.

MaxMate roll up cover from Amazon.com and it's listed for the Chevy Colorado, but it fits my truck like a glove. I have a video on it somewhere on my channel.

Seems like Jeep should have had their cards in a row before releasing a truck that can tow a significant amount - but not having a controller available. Seems pretty backwards.

did you by chance check into the ram trailer brake controller?
@ericfaley90194 жыл бұрын
I work for a dealership and was checking the parts catalog. Mopar finally lists the brake controller in the accessories catalog. I checked the availability and price. Well let’s see part still not available and price is quite a bit more than the Curt Bluetooth brake controller and there expensive. I ordered an install kit and controller from my local trailer sales lot. Car show season is coming up pretty quick. Need to tow my car trailer.

And? What's the difference? If you're making payments, that means you don't own it regardless of how you took possession of it. And if you trade it in, it works exactly the same way. I had this truck for a year, made a ton of money on it, and then turned it in early for another. The dealer didn't ask one word about the mods, nor did they penalize me, because it doesn't matter. The bank just wants their money. Same as a "buy". We went over this in a video earlier this year.
