Jeep Grand Cherokee AC and heater codes 52 and 54. Blend door actuators

This was very helpful. I had codes 52-54-&56. Once I removed the actuator, I discovered that 1/2 of the shaft on the back side had broken off. I bought a new part at Napa ($70). I installed it and my problem was resolved. Everything works now. The blend doors work just fine. I got AC and full heater controls. Thank you for sharing this knowledge.

We're u getting airflow? I've the same codes, hot or cold, mode select works, but no air flow!

@@terrystratford1235 I had very little air flow because the vent doors were in the closed position. Once the new actuator was installed, it calibrated itself, and then positioned the vent opening/closures properly. It has been working properly every since.

@@byronwhitney665 that's good to know! So instead of spending over a grand, I'll secure the recirc door with a screw or 2, then get to the actuators via the cheats way! I rang jeep(uk) they have those parts at £160 each, but the mode actuator is discontinued! So I'd have to get a pattern part! I think I'll try pattern blend door actuators as they about £15 each! If they fail, well,I'd rather lose £30 than £320! Many thanks!

@@byronwhitney665 when u put the actuators on, does it matter if the door is up or down? I understand the motor will turn clockwise 1st, so from up to the down position!

@@terrystratford1235 the shaft on the actuator is the “female” portion of the connection. So the male end slides into it. Then you have to rotate the actuator to align with the screw holes to refasten it to its stationary position. Once I turned on the power (ignition key) and the fan controls the actuator automatically began to calibrate itself. It took about 30 seconds. Then things worked properly. Also, you might consider getting some parts from a auto salvage / scrap yard. Sometimes you can get “obsolete” parts their that are still useable.

That was very helpful showing the codes where the website is. I had to rewind your video to see the search bar to get the correct search Bar for the error codes. It was very helpful explaining how to use the climate control knobs to read the error codes. Then I had to video the error code since I have so many of them with my telephone. Goodyear tire was able to recommend a service shop that is able to take the dash apart to repair the problem. Firestone used to do that kind of work but they told me that their one technician out of many stores in Denver retired. I tried to get a quote from the dealer service department but all I got was a diagnostic service fee of $160. One year ago I asked how much it would be to replace everything under the dash, since the vent selector was doing nothing and I didn’t have heat or AC. They gave me a ballpark estimate of $3000. Well with five cars I can’t spend that kind of money on heat and AC when the vehicle needs New tires.

Nvm I found my actuator and turn it myself.now my heat working again.video did help big time other videos wasn't clear like u gd job

Yeh it's every 20 ignition cycles it will recalibrate. Any stored codes are wiped every 79 ignition cycles!

‘01 WJ: Heater core works you can feel the vents are warm and actually start to blow as you drive fast from outside air getting in. Blend doors work. Blower motor works… hooked it straight up to 12v and runs great. The blower motor fuse is good and getting 12v. Not sure what the issue is but I’m close to just wiring it to 12v and putting a switch on the hot wire when I want it blowing full speed. Any thought what the issue might be? Don’t want to just start replacing parts and it’s -5° outside. Great video btw

Doesn’t make any weird noises and will decide to work about 25% of the time. When you say clearing codes are you referring to clearing codes via any old OBD2 code reader? Maybe the HVAC system is “locked out” as you explained in this video?

Don't forget about the resistor. Its what makes your fan go different speeds. Really common for them to fail.

weird, i put a new one in mine and i just turned it to cool temp and it moved, however little to no air out the vents. checked the blend doors and they’re not cracked and are moving. I’m not sure what the problem is, possibly i calibrated the actuator wrong?

I read some comments that stated the “fan” were sometimes installed improperly / backward. So the air is blowing in the wrong direction.

Could code 54 and 56 door travel too far, be the reason for no airflow? I understand the motors have to be replaced in a certain way, is it doors up or down, then replace the actuator?

The doors can go in any position. They calibrate themselves. As for the no airflow, I'm not sure on that.

@@prodieselrepair3218 yep, as I understand it's a male/female type so it can't be wrong! The no air flow was puzzling me, apparently the blend doors block the air flow by traveling too far! 👍

I do not know where it is. Use Mitchell DYI and get a service manual. It will help you figure it out.

If its like mine it will be at the back of the heater unit, between heater box and the bulkhead. To access it the correct way requires removing the dash out of the way and releasing the air box from the engine bay. I just did mine as my passenger side was not blowing hot and the female on the actuator was.split.
