It is also important to note that the oval-shaped key that goes in the housing for the switch actuator has the nipple on the top side....it will fit in the bottom. I had to pull mine back apart to allow the Liberty key to be released at all. MAGNIFICENT VIDEO!!! Saved me from spending a lot more doll hairs, and also saved a lot of stress.

I can NOT stress how important it is to LOOK AT THE PICTURE IN THE INSTRUCTIONS. That brass piece has a small arm that reaches out and touches the long plastic piece that runs through the entire assembly. MAKE SURE YOU PUT THAT BRASS ARM ON THE CORRECT SIDE OF THE RAISED LIP ON THAT PLASTIC PIECE AS INDICATED IN THE PICTURE. I broke my brand new replacement by not paying attention. Thankfully I used the plastic piece from the original and got it all put back together thanks to THIS video.

Great video. Very comprehensive. Odd that the same defect is also on pretty much every video I have seen so far. Yours is the best. Prior to pulling the ignition cylinder out, I put two witness marks on it. My theory is to make the reinstallation process, less arduous. Currently waiting for parts.

Thanks. I just did this repair to my 2006 Liberty. But, I made the mistake of removing the three black screws on the ignition switch which removes the white plastic plate. All kinds of things fell out. A spring, and little silver ball bearing. I ended up buying another one from Dorman along with the actuator pin part. Spent around $50 total which was a lot cheaper than towing to a garage.

Thanks! Exactly what I needed. When I jumped my starter relay, mine would not start, but cranked just fine. Replaced the actuator and it fired right up.

Same for me. Won't start while bridging the relay even those the starter runs strong. Really hope this is the issue. Really worried if it's not it will be that sensor in the transmissions

The "Security Torx" has a pin in middle. You can pry that pin offwith a small screwdriver. Then use a normal Torx..

You can pop the top off the relay and just physically press the contact with your finger to make it turn over.you have to turn the key to on position. But if you have the ignition switch off all you have to do is put a screwdriver in it and turn it over. Key just needs to be turned to on pos so shifter will move. No jumpers are needed. And you can drive it without taking down the ignition switch and cyclling it to start . either way it's totally driveable without the stupid actuator . I think you took way too much off. I hope I'll get this done without taking off as much as you took off to do that I didn't need to take all that off to get the switch oheck don't think I have to take all that off to put it back in and I didn't. Just loosen tho everything bracket screws and you got room.You got some good tips on the actuator switch thank you. I've been starting it with the relay for months. Just replace the key cylinder a little while ago and decided it must be the ignition switch when I pulled the ignition switch off the chunk off the actuator fell off and I realized it was just a broken actuator. I really need to see how the actuator comes out physically and goes back in physically you did not show that thanks. Pretty good video I guess.

Ran into this problem. Jumped relay for about a week to get me going to work and such, after a week it wouldn’t crank anymore and starter just spun itself would not engage flywheel. Tested starter and battery they both good hoping just the ignition switch is the issue

Why don't you show everything step by step from beginning to end from the time you take off the Shroud around the steering column to the time you disconnect the starter switch and pull off the cover and all the little the security screws and the little pins in the springs and the key inside the yellow tab and the shifter cable and all that stuff? You just got everything hanging there. It's already all undone. You're not showing any little tips about pulling it all apart. Seriously if anybody got as far as you are right now they know what they're doing.overall very good . thank you . helped me .

It may not be your problem, you can turn the switch with a screwdriver now that it’s removed, if it starts just fine with the screwdriver then it’s something in the ignition pin to switch mating.

SuperPondo not I wouldn’t. The actual switch isn’t known for being a common failure, and it’s likely that any aftermarket part you replace it with will be lower quality than original. And, it really does not take long to get down to the switch anyway, less than 10 minutes.

Ben Haley the alignment is just really tricky to get it exactly right, the video makes it look easier than it is, trust me a spent awhile trying to get it right before filming!

Martyn Lee since you are talking about the key release button I assume that means you have a manual. On the automatics there is a mechanism that controls this which ties into the shifter cable. The manual steering column is different with the button. It’s been a long time since I have worked on a manual so I don’t remember how those parts interact, but I would guess something is a little off there. If I can find my spare manual steering column this weekend I’ll take a look at it and see what I can figure out.

When you turned the key to on did the dash light up like normal? Its possible the pin is bad enough that you are not even getting it to turn to "on" if the dash lights don't come on.

My 07 will crank with relay jumped... I take apart my ignition actuator and no damage. Fuel sprays from rail. Any advice on ignition switch itself? Could this cause it to not crank/not start with key on starter jumped??

Does the key not get the engine to crank? If it has good fuel pressure and wont start with the relay jumped I would check if you are getting spark next. Neutral safety switches can also also no crank issues, but shouldn't keep it from starting with the relay bypassed.

I lost that little piece that goes at the bottom with the yellow button! I Absolutely hate it!!! Just one freakin' little piece that was causing me all the headaches!! I hope my auto parts carries it.

The dealer *might* have that, but I doubt it. The actuator pin is considered part of the steering column, and its only sold new as a complete unit. Doorman might make a replacement little metal part, but I think you will need to goto a junkyard and remove it yourself from a vehicle. The little metal piece keeps the shifter from being moving out of parkwithout the key to on, but does not affect starting. If your trans is still in park that metal piece I lost didn't make a difference in starting.

How did you get the ESC switch off of the top column cover?

This was an 05 so it did not have it. That being said I have pulled this all apart before on an 06+, I don't recall what it took to unplug the ESP switch but if you poke around with a light and look for a release tab you should be able to disconnect it if needed.

Sometimes when I go to start my Jeep, nothing happens when I turn the key. The dash lights come on but nothing else. I have to just keep turning the key over and over again until finally it starts. Would this be the problem?

Yes it very well could be. It could also be the NSS neutral safety switch. I have a video where I show how with a piece of wire you can bypass the starter relay in case of a failed ignition pin, try that the next time it doesn’t want to start. If that doesn’t do it you can try holding the key to the start while you jiggle the shifter, if the transmission sensor(NSS) doesn’t think it’s in park it won’t let it start.

This was a 2005 Jeep Liberty(Cherokee outside of North America)/KJ. The ignition actuator though is common to many more Jeeps going back to 1997 and for at least until 2007 or later.
