Good video. Thanks for posting. Just want to share some info. I replaced the shoes on my 2005 Liberty about four years ago. I had no trouble getting the parts to fit and the brake worked well. A few days ago, I went in to replace the brake pads and the parking brake had a major problem. It seems the actuator that pushes the top of the shoes had seized which caused the shoes to wear out prematurely. In my case, the actuator was in the way of installing the new shoes and that is how I realized what caused the problem. I could not get it to loosen up. Even after soaking all night in PB Blaster it was so tight I could barely move it with a vise grip. I came here hoping someone was showing the simplest way to remove the actuator. So, when you do a parking shoe replacement make certain that actuator can move. It could be frozen in the relaxed position and you wouldn't even know it unless you try to move it. Mine was frozen in the extended position so it was obvious. I'm going to try pushing the whole thing out through the backing plate. If that works I'll come back and let you know.

Almost finished doing the brakes on a 2003 Jeep Liberty. The parking brake cables had some travel in them so I only ordered new shoes and hardware (along with new rotors and pads for the disc brakes). After installation the parking brakes still did not work so I assumed the old cables had stretched. So I ordered new cables. After installation of new cables the E-brake still did not work. Got to taking a closer look and that is when I discovered that the parking brake actuator levers on both sides were seized in approximately the middle of their intended length of travel.(same problem as you) As I am not a mechanic by trade it took a bit to figure it out. Managed to pull each one out and then cleaned them up with a wire wheel. As they have a similar action as scissors I took a hammer to them and tapped the levers back and forth, until they could move freely and come apart. I then finished cleaning with a wire wheel, greased them up with brake grease and reassembled. Didn't see the actuator listed as a replaceable part when I placed my parts order. You'd think they would have it listed as I'm sure I'm not the only one who has been surprised by this unforeseen problem. In any event, barring any more unforeseen setbacks we should have everything back together tomorrow and hopefully working properly.

How did you remove the actuator from the backing plate? I am struggling with this very same issue. Mine was stuck in the extended position and I was able to force it back with pliers and pb blaster.

Great video, but you didn't explain which way to turn the adjuster to loosen it or tighten it.

Man, i wish my rotor came off that easy. Been pounding on it for a good while with a 2.5 lb mini sledge. Still sized on. Threw the wheel back on for now and will probably soak the hub in pb blaster when i get more time to work on it

My bolts had 12 mm heads, not 13 mm. People should always double check sizes to make sure they do not mung up bolts and nuts causing further issues.

Ya, you never know if some may have changed the hardware to a different size previously. Rounded bolt heads are no fun.

Video is good until 5:45. I see you can't re-install them either since you stopped recording and got your buddy to do it. Then started recording after to make it look like you did it.

Quite a good video, but could have done with more detail showing the actual process of disassembly/reassembly for those of us who are willing, but mechanically inexperienced!

Thanks for the feedback! Was working on my own for this video so was hard to get footage of every step. We're hoping to redo some of our older videos with more detail. This being one of our earlier videos, we weren't too experienced ourselves when it came to recording/editing.

Good info kiddo, I have NOT 1 NOT 2 but 3 libertys 20, 03,, 04. The 20 has 126000 plus miles & 03 163600 plus miles, the 04 has 217000 plus miles on them. So I do keep them very safe and very well maintained. I think the rear E-Brake servicing is a real pain in the butt. I like your time how well you what you do here....PS; I like your gages, what size are they?

All vehicles that have disc brakes AND parking brakes WILL have an "Internal Drum" brake type assembly.

@@c.blakerockhart1128 it's weird dude, when I worked on cars as a kid they were either drum or disk, then it's disk with drum inside, we are still in the dark ages with these cars, you say it's so, and I'm not disrespecting post, I just thought we would be so far past drums now..

@@majorlifts I know it's weird. I just found out recently. The weirdest thing about it is that they are EXACTLY like the old drum brakes. They even have the little adjustment star/gear that you adjust through the slot in the back just like the old cars. I recently did my wife's Jeep Liberty. That's how I found this video. I have watched several. My comment above is actually a Direct quote from a mechanic that I know. That's also how I know that it is called an "Internal Drum". I always figured that we would have something like magnetic brakes by now. But at least we don't have to put the bottom of our shoe on the tire to stop like I did way back in the day.
