YJ fans, rejoice!
We have a square headlight Jeep!
Our friend Jack (CRAWL GUY) got this thing for a killer deal, considering the condition and all of the modifications to it, so it's hard to argue that he got it for an absolute steal.
Jack is a surfer dude. In fact, he is such a dedicated surfer that when we drove to Dallas to get the CJ7, we cut the whole trip a day short so that he could get back to the coast in time for the record swells hitting San Diego. That meant that we had to sacrifice 100% of our allotted rest time in order to make it home on schedule. I have never been so sleep deprived in my life... LOL. So, second to an Islander edition YJ, the Sahara is the PERFECT Jeep for Jack, and is aptly named the "Surfin' Sahara."
I told Jack before he bought this Jeep that I would glady buy it from him for what he paid for it when he's done with it, but I have this real sneaking suspicion that he is going to fall in love with this thing the first time he takes the top off and straps a board to it. Either way, I win, really... If I don't end up with a Jeep, I end up with a good friend who loves his new Jeep.
As far as prepping the YJ for the Rubicon, Jack has the shortest "to-do" list of all of us. He has a reliable motor, trans, and t-case to start, he's fuel-injected, the Dana 35 has been replaced with a sturdier rear end, and there are no major wacky mods to undo, other than some weird wiring. With a different set of bumpers, a winch, some lockers, rock sliders, and maybe a small lift kit with a SYE kit and rear driveshaft, he'll be ready to rock and roll.
He literally ordered a body mount kit to remove the body lift the day we filmed this, so I can count that as a "to-do" item, but realistically, by the time you watch this, he'll probably already have it done.
On his personal list of things to get done, he has some cosmetic and creature comfort items like seats, mirrors, different fenders, narrower tires, etc... but this Jeep could do everything he needs it to without those.
I'm very stoked for him and can't wait to follow the progress as he preps this thing for our first trip to TDS and our ultimate goal of wheeling the Rubicon Trail.
Thank you for watching and stay tuned for more on the Surfin' Sahara!
-Jarrett

No kidding! I’m really happy for him. I think the YJ suits him very well and the second he takes the top off and straps his surfboard to it he’s going to fall in love with it.

Next video posts in the morning! I will be taking a week off from working on Jeeps for a minor outpatient surgery but the content shouldn’t be too interrupted.

You and me both! Thanks Paul! I’ll be sure to share the progress of it as we inch closer to TDS and the Rubicon Trail. So far, he has already removed the bumpers and the body mount kit has already showed up in the mail!

88 yjs had non c clip 35s, still bad, but no c clip. I did a few rubicon express SOA KITS on similar jeeps for rubicon trips back in the 90s, upgrade the duraspark ignition, or bring spare modules.

I learn more from KZbin comments than anywhere else. That’s cool! I didn’t know that! And good tips! He needs clearance for those tires once he takes the body lift out. Maybe a SOA kit would be the way to go for him.

@@CRAWLTV flattened out lift springs work well, add a full length flat leaf to all 4 corners, add 2.5 degrees of additional caster. 1" body lift, and extended bump stops help keep 35"s from contacting the body.clearance the pinion yokes with a carbide burr on a dremel if needed to prevent binding under load while articulating, SOA susp moves a lot!

I’ll see if that’s something he wants to do! Have you seen the high angle u-joints from Tom woods? They make it offset to increase the angle before the yokes touch. It’ll still bind under load like and U Joint but it solves the contact problem.
