Thanks William! I'm a licensed tech and this saved me a bunch of grief. I knew the job was coming in so I figured I'd hit KZbin to see how everyone was doing it. Your trick of pulling it out beside the oil filter worked perfectly - Chrysler says to remove it where you initially showed. It took me about 45 minutes total working on a hoist with air tools (1/4" and 3/8" air ratchets and a 3/8" impact gun to remove the skid plate). And yes, that A/C thing is the compressor. Someone asked about socket sizes so here goes: 10 mm for the skid plate. 16 mm shallow socket and/or wrench for the belt tensioner, idler pulley and lower alternator bolt. 13 mm deep and shallow sockets and/or wrench for the A/C compressor, compressor bracket, the top alternator bolt and the nut for the main cable to the alternator.

Thanks a million William, sure enough I tried removing alternator from the front like suggested for Compass, no go, you saved me a lot of time and frustration, it came out the back by the oil filter as you show on your video. Wow what a job, most of my Alts in the past were about an hour max, they usually are on top, easy to get to, this job sucked. You know what is crazy; I replaced the 10 year old serpentine belt but no sense in keeping the old belt as a backup since you can only install it from bottom after jacking up Jeep and removing skid plate, yeah right like I am going to do all of that broke down on the side of the road :) So a little history on our 2008 Jeep Patriot Sport 2.0L with CVTrans at 96k miles, for a couple of months the engine was making a loud grinding/clanking noise in the lower front part of the engine. No loss of power, no problem with Trans., I could not get my stick down close enough to listen to where this noise was coming from (old school trick :). Many, including myself, thought maybe timing chain, yet again no power loss, miss or back firing. Dealer wanted $120 to diagnose problem, local shops $80. I am almost 60 and have been working on cars/trucks since I was a teenager, I have heard Many bearings, clutches, etc. but this one stumped me so I continued to drive it knowing when it breaks then I will know what was wrong. Well sure enough the battery idiot light came on this week, and running across this video and comments of same LOUD bearing noise, found my problem. When I pulled off skid plate found pieces of the bearing. Job cost around $220 for ReMan Alt. and new Belt. Dealer gave me est. $800. Not sure how much longer I can do these type of jobs at my age, these new car Engineers are trying to kill off us Shade Tree Mechs. :( Sorry for long reply, it is an old guy thing :) So Youngsters if I can do this job, you have no excuse :)

2024 now & I greatly appreciate this video. Replaced my alternator in 2022 the difficult way and now looking for an easier way bc its bad again. Thanks !

I work as an automotive technician. You are correct about going in through the rear, it is a lot easier but it is possible from the front of the wheel well. The most important thing is to move that compressor and its bracket to get clearance. Great video!
@martinswan9175 Жыл бұрын
I couldn't believe how the compressor just hangs by the refrigerant lines and how far over you have to push it. I was just waiting for the the "Hiss of Death".

My man! I know this video is 6yo but maaaaan I appreciate you for taking the time showing hw to mount the alternator this way. Ive followed other videos and I’ve struggle to put it back and your way i did in In seconds. Thank You!

Thanks for this video man. Gives me the confidence to try it myself. You know, in my old 93 Chevy the alternator is on top of the engine, front and center. Two bolts and it's out. Why in God's name I should have to take the wheel off is beyond me. Seriously, I laughed out loud when you said "screw you jeep".

I'm a Ford auto tech and this is a stupid setup. I'd also like to say "screw you jeep for the unnecessary overrunning clutch on the alternator pulley". Great video, thanks for posting

Was there only one bolt holding the alternator in place? If so then all I have to do tomorrow is take that bolt off and it should be out! I had to stop early because it started to rain

Ron MacDonnell if I had to do it again? 2.5 - 3 hours? tops. this first time i'm sure it took 4, maybe 5hrs. between getting the tire on and off and figuring everything out. felt like longer. i'd put aside at least that much time. then a few hours for some cold brewskies
