In older cars they used to be at the top and would literally take a half hour to do it. The way it is now, I don't want to even attempt it. It's not that I don't know how to change an alternator, I don't want to be messing with everything else like air conditioning compressors and lying under the car to do it. However, thank you for showing me. Great video.

Great video, straight forward and to the point! I just completed replacing my alternator on my 07 Patriot thanks to this video. Since the video didn't include the steps, I thought I'd leave them in the comments. REMOVAL of current alternator (from under the vehicle): 1. Disconnect the battery 2. Release serpentine belt (16mm) 3. Disconnect AC compressor electrical 4. Remove AC compressor bracket bolts (3 lower, 2 upper all 13mm) 5. Swing AC compressor down and let hang 6. Disconnect the electrical of the alternator 7. Remove top bolt of alternator (16mm) 8. Loosen lower bolt that sits on a cradle (bolt-16mm, nut-15mm) To take the alternator OUT of the engine bay: raise the alternator a little out of the cradle, move it towards the driver side 3in so it clears the cradle, move it down 4in, slide it towards the passenger side and it should come out - just like playing Tetris. INSTALLATION of new alternator: reverse the steps, it was easier to install than it was to remove it but make sure you hook up the electrical to the AC compressor and alternator before bolting on the AC compressor as it is difficult to get you hands in there once the AC compressor is installed.

Pro-Tip! The 140 amp alternator is larger than the 115 amp alternator, but it looks very much the same. For my 2013 Jeep Patriot 2.4L, I purchased the replacement alternator before I removed the old one, and I opted for the 140 amp replacement thinking it would be the same size and the "upgrade" would be good. Wrong. As you can see in this very helpful video, the access is very tight. I removed the AC bracket and had the AC compressor dangling on the hoses - I was able to remove the old 115 amp alternator, but I could NOT NOT get the 140 amp alternator into position. Much struggling before I carefully measured and saw that the diameter of the 140 amp is about half an inch larger than the diameter of the 115 amp alternator. Once I got the 115 amp alternator, it installed in a snap. (well, "snap" is subjective). Oh another Pro-Tip! When re-installing the AC compressor bracket, install all the bolts loosely at first, thus allowing you enough play to line up and "start" the bolt holding the compressor to the mounting bracket. What I did: I tightened the bracket to the engine block first, but then could not start the threads for the bolt that mounts the compressor to the bracket. Had to loosen (remove some?), the bracket bolts to the engine block, so I could start the other bolts. Once all the bolts are started, you can tighten them of course. PS: This video was very helpful thank you!!

Helpful video. The AC lines have a bracket on the outside of the frame behind the windshield washer reservoir. I removed those bolts to get the AC compressor to move a little more. Most of the video shots are from the front of the engine. What worked for me on a 2015 Patriot, was to pull the AC compressor towards the front of the engine and drop the alternator down behind the AC compressor. That is what was done in this video but it is hard to see the big picture.

Nononsense. I finally have time to fix the Jeep. Apparently the alternator doesn’t just seat there . I had to use hammer to get the holes to line up. Please people don’t be like me thinking the alternator will just fit perfectly it doesn’t. Use hammer preferably plastic hammer or gently hit the alternator. Again thank you sir for your advice.
@NoNonsenseKnowHow4 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear you got it knocked out. Got to be careful how hard you hit alternators. Can be bad for the electronics inside. Prying is much better. But yeah sometimes you got to do what you got to do. They can definitely be tight in there.
@ibrahimabah28934 жыл бұрын
Yes sir. I tried prying it but it was not moving. I gently hammer it to just line the holes . Not on the actual alternator. I am glad you clarified that.

very good quick overview of how to get that alternator out of my 2008 Jeep Compass
@repnatl6 жыл бұрын
I just did one of these today took both the washer and coolant reservoir out, took the passenger motor mount, unbolted the power steering pump and moved it to the side left the line attached, jack and block of wood on a jack under the oil pan lifted the engine up to gain access, removed both idler pulleys then the tensioner pulley then remove the tensioner itself, unbolted the alternator and the connections i also took the ground wire off on the frame by the alternator and slid it around and removed the alternator from the top took me about 30 mins and this was the first time i did the job lol. Only to find out the problem is in the pcm not allowing the alternator to charge the battery so now waiting on the pcm to get here. Again the way i did it was about 30 mins to remove it so about an hour overall
@NoNonsenseKnowHow6 жыл бұрын
+Chris Atkinson Thanks for sharing your experience. It takes me about 15min to get out my way. If you dont have a car lift though then coming out the top like you did is probably better. Thanks for watching!

You're very welcome as mechanics some ways works easier for others ya know lol. Although coming from the bottom there is more room to drop the alternator from the top I had to wiggle it into position but as long as the job gets done that's all that matters.
