This is probably the very best Jeep Patriot rear drum shoe replacement video on KZbin. Everything is covered very clearly. Excellent. His attention to cleaning rust off the components is excellent, something a service garage would probably not take time to do. My comments: - be extra careful to not overextend the wheel cylinder piston one way or the other to avoid fluid leakage. - he mentioned it at the end...... I would have replaced the drum and hardware kit due to the advanced rust. - don't forget to bleed/exchange your brake fluid every 2 to 4 years to keep your system free of contamination and corrosion. - it's never a bad idea to use brake safe lubricants where he showed. I like high solids moly paste for the metal-to-metal contact points - Honda (Dow) M77

Thanks so much for the video. Some notes for my future reference: - I found it easier to remove a hold spring cup before the bottom return spring (and also reinstall the bottom return spring first). Made it so there was no tension on the bottom return spring. - In the absence of the modified pliers, I found long nose locking pliers could substitute. - I used a ratcheting clamp with rubber contact faces to compress the shoes before reinstalling the back upper return spring, and put my knee behind the shoe as I pulled the spring toward myself to hook it. - Using the 10mm wrench as a spacer caused me to leak some brake fluid, but I don’t think I damaged the boot. So on the second wheel, I put the adjustment bar as small as it would go at first, and then increased size from there. - Frequently engaging and disengaging the parking brake seemed to help center between adjustments, but man was it tedious. - Avoid cars with drum brakes in the future if you can help it. 😅

Thank you so much MTLcarguy for such an easy to follow, step by step explanation of rear brake shoe replacement. Your reading from a script conveyed only the essential words needed to get the message across. No trash talk or time wasting. Your camera work was also outstanding. I feel indebted to you as I proceed to do a brake job on my Jeep Patriot. Signed Steve from Newark, IL

Wow! How useful to see such a thoughtful and creative way to do what can be a frustrating job. I have worked on all types of cars for 50 years and still can learn from someone who has new ways of approaching a job.When I first worked in a repair shop in 1966 there was a tech there who had lost one of his hands in an accident .He was able to do rear drum brakes quickly and easily as his hand had been replaced with a metal hook and claw that worked great for handling the springs.

I do not know, I never went to a shop or a commercial garage in my life for any kind of brake maintenance or replacement. In the last 45 years, I did it by myself. Try to talk with a friend or someone you know that has a general knowledge about car maintenance. This person could give you the name of a local car repair shop with reliable mechanics. Good luck!

Struggling with the springs on the second set! Did one side with needle nose and decided to buy the hook tool today 😂 I cannot get the needle nose in between the spring its so tight! Secondly - one of the cylinders is fully extended and will not go back in! Already over nighted a new cyl but can I just compress it back in? It was literally working a second before! Thanks!
@mtlcarguy Жыл бұрын
The spring can also be held using the straight section of the spring but, the needle nose must have a strong grip to make sure it is not sliding when stretching the spring during the installation. Secondly: When a piston is fully extended, it normally means that the opposite piston is fully inserted and both pistons are touching together inside the cylinder assembly when there is no hydraulic pressure applied with the brake pedal. Each upper section of the brake shoes should be properly anchored to the pistons and well centered between the cylinder assembly to sit the brake shoes on the six contact points of the back plate and easily refit the brake drum.

I just did mine and now I’m not sure if the shoe kit is on too tight and am worried about mpg. Do you have any recommendations to know if they are on properly? Thank you.
@mtlcarguy2 жыл бұрын
Maybe a bad adjustment but if the brake shoes are too tight when the star wheel adjuster is fully retracted, it could be caused by a parking brake cable that needs to be loosened a bit by adjusting the parking hand brake position. Once in my life, I bought cheap aftermarket shoes that had liners that were a bit too thick to fit properly so I exchanged them for an other brand that was fitting properly.

@@mtlcarguy thank you for the reply. We went back in there and wound down the slack adjuster all the way. I appreciate you 👍

Hello, i accidentally pushed the wheel cylinder and now its sticking out on one end. Do you know how I can push it back? Doesn't want to budge.
@mtlcarguy Жыл бұрын
I guess you mean a wheel cylinder piston sticking out. Usually the 2 pistons and the 2 sealing cups are mounted back to back inside the cylinder. A compression spring is located in the middle of the cylinder. Normally, when the brake shoes are removed, the 2 pistons can be moved together by hand from side to side within the limit of the boots. Sometimes, this problem can be caused by a brake shoe that is anchored on the opposite piston and it is pressing too hard or is stuck in a bad position. The brake shoes must be properly seated in order to center the pistons in the cylinder. Note: To kept the pistons centered, I used locking pliers (07:05) to hold the shoe in place. It is less common but the problem can be caused by rust on the surface of the piston that is in contact with the cylinder. Try to move the pistons together without the shoes installed. Good luck !

So my drum is being held by the actual brake because the teeth are over tightened on that side because of a bad cylinder How can I adjust the teeth if I have no access to the adjuster lock ?
@mtlcarguy Жыл бұрын
There is an adjusting hole behind the shoe support plate. First remove the rubber plug. Then insert a small flat-head screwdriver to disengage the lever pawl and if I remember well you rotate the wheel upwards with an other flat-head screwdriver until the shoes are getting loose.

Could you tell me what brand of puller you have?
@mtlcarguy4 ай бұрын
I got this 8in. puller more than 20 years ago and there is no brand name on it. To make it safer to use with drums and rotors, I modified it as you can see in an other video I made. Ref.: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5W5pqeIjdWcd9E Note: A real ''brake drum and rotor puller'' is quite expensive but it is a better and safer tool to perform the task.

To give me an idea, how many miles does that jeep has? Mine 2008 4x2 has 50,250 miles, i already changed struts, tires and cvt oil, any other recomendation for the maintenance at this point? im looking for the afination at 60,000 miles. And i have a sound at the pilot tire, like a rubber, when i pass a mini hole or mini mountain it sounds like its gonna go off but at high speed or full charged the car it doesnt, and when i brake slow, it crunches like a rubber or something but i feel it in the pedals, the sound and crunch. May i send you a video or something?
@mtlcarguy3 жыл бұрын
Changing your struts was probably OK due to the age of the vehicle. After 10 years it is also normal to replace the struts and the CVT transmission fluid. The front knocking sound you hear when you go over small holes is usually a broken rubber bushing on the front lower control arm. It can also be a ball joint or a sway bar link problem. The crunch noise when you brake slowly can be caused by rust build up on the rotor and/or on the caliper bracket. It could also be a sliding restriction between the outboard pad anchors and the caliper bracket sliding surface and/or caliper guide pins too tight or stuck. With these conditions, the pads are not squeezing the rotor properly and it can be very noisy. After a normal ride you can safely check if the rim wheels are too hot. If so, something is wrong and the brake components should be checked and fixed as soon as possible. Note: One end of the rear control arms is made with an encapsulated ball joint and they are often rusted inside. Ref: Recomendations. The alternator is usually good for more than 60,000 miles but the OAD pulley may be noisy and defective soon. All modern vehicles with lots of electronic components have lots of wires with very small gauges. They can get damaged fast under oxidation conditions. Protect all electrical connectors and components if you ever wash your engine. Make sure the battery connections and all the ground connections are well connected to avoid voltage drops and/or amperage drops. Good luck!

And would you think its a good idea to change the break fluid with the disc breakes sistem with 1/3 of its life? Less than the half they have cause one time it shaked when i brake at 35 mph going down hill and that time i had just changed the struts and didnt balanced the wheels and aligned them, but i maked it after that.

@@TheButcherblanco Brake fluid is hygroscopic and absorb moisture. This can create poor braking but it also can create corrosion contamination. If there is too much contamination the ABS system can work poorly and/or get damaged eventually. A dark color is a bad sign but it is easy to check with a brake fluid strip test. If contaminated the fluid should be replaced. Concerning the vibration... glazing, warping, bad wear, rust or bad installation can cause the problem. Your rotors and pads should be replaced.
