Jeep Rebuild 2: CJ-5 Gets a new (old) frame

I found a better frame and some springs for the 1956 heap of a Jeep we pulled out of the woods. It's the military version- the M38A1. It had some issues I had to repair on it, but should make a reasonable platform for rebuilding the CJ5 on it's journey to being converted to an electric vehicle.

I bought a 1976 CJ-7. When I got it home I power washed the entire jeep. The frame looked great, it was all undercoated till I hit it with my power washer and blasted right through it. It had rusted from the inside out leaving only the undercoating which was easily blasted away. Luckily down in south New Jersey a guy called Sam the jeep man (rip) had a great 1986 frame for me along with a gas tank and power steering box and an amazing dash pad, that's where the reconstruction began. Then came the new springs and hours and hours of work and a fiberglass body, tons of rewiring and rebuilding the 304 V-8 and quadra trac auto transmission. since then I put 64,000 miles on it and wheeled it every chance I got, Paragon and Raush in P.A. many times and many other places. only rolled it once. I LOVE the flip back soft top where it opens just above the driver. Saves time from having to drop the whole top just to drive to and from work. Can't trust leaving it wide open. I do feel his pain, been there done that. slightly insane 4 wheelers..

Nice to see this level of restoration, instead of bolting on aftermarket junk. FYI I worked for a leaf spring manufacturer, it was standard practice to peen the threads on the end of the center bolt after tourqing.

I am glad to hear you're going to keep working on the rebuild of the jeep. I wanted to let you know that at the end of the day, after all is said and done, you're going to have a true jeep with interchangeable parts. I have had a 59 willys, and now a 1995 YJ, my dad has had a 1970 CJ5 and a 1985 CJ 5 my brother had a Jeep CJ 7 set up for Moab and now days. My YJ, we are having problems finding parts for because Jeep sold out to FIAT. In my opinion is crap the new jeep are high-priced junk. The footprint is way too wide for a mountain vehicle. I hear that the TJ parts are also becoming harder to find. But the after-market CJ parts are abundant. I am currently redoing my YJ for the second time. The dashboard cluster is either getting old CJ gauges or new electronics clusters. The brain box has no after-market or is no longer supported by Jeep. The steering column was a rebuild from NY that was hard to find. So I am faced with basically slowly switching everything over to after-market parts of the CJ .the rear axle and transmission were just rebuilt. Sorry for the long story, but do not think you're the only one . Keep up the hard work, and you're going to have something better than what is new. Most people just have a jeep as a grocery getter .

Regarding the springs, you should not have painted them, but lubed them as you did, altho with ind.grease... My experience shows that if you are going to disassemble them to the point to which you have and clean them up, you should take a brush, brush on some thick industrial chain grease, assemble them, and spray them down with more industrial grease from a spray can... Those hold up for around a year in the open, are immune to salt, water and other shit... Every 9 months, bend down, respray them and voila, you have springs that work better, as they have the full ability to move against eachother while springing, and they will remain rust free forever essentially, if you re-apply the grease annually or like most normal people, once a year... Bike chain grease is great, and so is forklift chain grease...

Right now, it’s sitting in my driveway next to the body. I’ve listed it for sale a few places, but so far no one has come to get it. It’s a tough sell for a questionably rebuildable motor that’s not especially rare.

The state I’m in doesn’t require a title for vehicles made before 1999, only a Bill of Sale. So the friend who gave it to (it’s been on his property since he bought the property 20 years ago) me writes out a bill of sale that says he sold it to me for $1, and I can use that to register it.
