Man, I enjoy your videos. They have helped tremendously. I have changed my brake pads, rotors and headlights with the help of your tutorials. I now want to tackle the oil change process. Thanks again for providing information to people who actually want to get their hands dirty and feel satisfied with their car skills.

To remove and install the skid plate remove all the bolts except the 2 rear 10mm bolts. The skid plate is notched so just loosen those two bolts last, Push the skid plate foreword under the front bumper cover. Then lower the rear of the skid plate and pull it back and out. To reinstall the skid plate, push the skid plate up under the front bomber cover lift the rear of the plate a slide it back onto the 2 rear 10mm bolts. Replace the rest of the bolts loosely, Then go back and tighten them all. Easy one person job if done in this order. Cheers all !

on my trailhawk I reached in and took out the oil filter after draining the oil, did not have to take the skid plate off; it is easier to take it off but not absolutely required.

I found out you can access the filter pretty well through the exhaust hole in the skid plate. I was able to get mine off by hand, if it's too tight and you use one of the oil filter sockets, you wouldn't be able to get an extension or ratchet on it as the end of the filter is a little too close to the skid plate. Some of the filter socket tools have a hex head on the bottom that you could turn with a wrench from the side to break a tight filter loose. Or you could use a type of oil filter wrench that grips around the side. The filter is a bit of a puzzle getting out - and a little messy because it has to tip sideways. Next time I'm planning on puncturing the old filter and draining it with a form-a-funnel prior to removing it so it isn't so messy. Another option may be to bag the filter before removing it so when you tip it sideways it doesn't leak everywhere. To get my filter out, I couldn't slide it between the heat shield (that protects the filter form the exhaust) and the skid plate, it was just a little too small of an opening. I was going to try and bend the heat shield a little to see if that would work, I decided to try something simpler. I slid the filter a little ways toward the passenger side of the vehicle, then lifted/worked it a little forward and up over the exhaust to get it to the drivers side of the exhaust where the gap between the exhaust and the skid plate was just wide enough to remove the filter. Exhaust bends can vary with each vehicle so with some vehicles the filter may not come out that way and others may have plenty of room. I had to sop up all of the oil that had spilled from the filter on the top of the skid plate using several shop towels. Even with that mess, I think it beats removing the skid plate. Next time I think I can do it with very little mess by pre-draining the filter. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice.I was able to easily get the filter out by usingyour way.They could of made the opening just a bit bigger and that would of worked.At least I don't have to drop the skid plate.

Damn that sucks. Maybe drive it without the skid plate until you need to off-road and keep the plate in your garage.

My Trick for letting the skid plate down and also for holding it up high enough to get the front bolts started is to turn a square milk crate box upside down while I have the car up on ramps. The skidplate only has about 3 inches to lower down to hit the crate when removing it. I then take the removed skidplate off the crate box and finish my oil change. once I have replaced the filter and put the drain plug back in and refill the oil, I put the skidplate back on top of the milk crate and then get the front holes lined up where they need to be - the front of the skidplate is raised up and aligned where it needs to be, while back is resting on the milk crate (as opposed to me trying to awkwardly hold up both ends (very difficult). Now once I get 3 or 4 of the front bolts started, I can then easily lift up the back of the skid plate and start a couple of the back bolts on each side. Then I start the rest of the bolts and tighten them up side to side in an even manner - makes a very easy job of it. You can buy the milk crates at dollar tree stores or lowes or menards for just a couple of dollars. And, you can store your extra antifreeze and 5 qt bottles of oil in the milk crates in the back of your renee once you are done using them for your skidplate holder!

Good idea! I already have a few of them. I don’t use ramps. I just crawl under it. Good tips!

I'm a 75 year old woman with arthritis, and I don't change my own oil anymore. I just came here out of curiosity before taking my Renegade Trailhawk in to Jiffy Lube. After seeing the video, I made sure to tip my mechanic an extra 15 bucks for the extra work involved for the skid plate.

Can you give me the part number for the 3 hex bolts? I am missing a couple and the dealership keeps getting me the wrong ones in on order. Thanks
@WickedFabz3 жыл бұрын
The dealer will charge you tons for that. Take one that you have to a good hardware store that carries a wide variety of nuts and bolts and have them match it up for ya. Prob save about 60$ that way.

Is it the ones that hold the plastic bumper trim to the plate?
@DLivingston3 жыл бұрын
@@WickedFabz nope. I have plenty of those. It’s the ones that litterly hold the skid plate to the frame on the front.

Oh ok…. The Jeep isn’t hers right now or I will check. Won’t be back here till 10pm est. the smaller ones are 10mm and the ones up front are either 13mm, 14mm or 15mm. Not sure off top of my head. It’s 630pm est here if you can wait.

Use another hydro jack to hold the skid plate and put it back up to secure it. My dad did this and it works well. You will need to put a base on the tip of the jack like a piece of ply wood or something to balance the skid plate.
@Kylloke6 жыл бұрын
Kind of a PIA to remove this rather large skid plate every time you change oil - what a poor design, come on Jeep! I'm going to be boring a hole in the skid plate and making a small access cover to get to the filter. Drain plug already has an access hole to drain oil.

A few other people has told me that they are doing the same. Idk if I will cause it does keep dirt out from under neath for the most part.

I haven't don't it but with my average size hands I'm sure I can remove the filter (Without removing the skid plate), just need to pri loosen filter on a cold motor & loosen with a gripy pad & rag to catch the oil! & done!

Keep me posted on how you make out with that. It would be interesting to know. TY.

@@WickedFabz well I did an oil change & needed to drop front part of the plate, but kept 2 back bolts on, I guess Jeep went cheap on the renegade, other Jeep models have a filter door.

Took off. Only 4 torx screws and up front securing to plastic bumper, loose as heck very floppy. Seems to be missing the bolts with the large holes that attach to metal bumper / frame Only took out 4 10mm bolts on frame. Maybe 10 minutes. I think may cut a curve in guard for easier filter removal. I did use some bolts and washer to secure loose bumper cover to frame so it won't flap. Also saw the top bolt from exhaust with the mesh heat protection on it missing so gotta get a bolt for that, no signs of leaking there though. It seems every vehicle I get is different. I see videos showing like 4 here 4 here and 4 there. We'll, only 4 bolts holding in. I There were slots so guessing that was where the plate slid in and held in by 13mm bolts?
