The Smittybilt Gen2 Bolt on Tire Carrier, for 2007-2017 JKs, is compatible with the Smittybilt SRC or XRC Gen2 rear bumper, or the tenth anniversary steel rear bumper. This tire carrier can accommodate larger than factory sized tires, without damage to the product or the mount. It has a stronger mounting point than most other products, as it is attached directly to the frame rail as opposed to the bumper itself. The tire carrier is adjustable both up and down and in and out, to hold various sizes of tires while offering maximum rear window visibility. It comes with a third brake light mount, and you can attach other accessories. Most notably, this tire carrier allows you to open and close your tailgate with one hand in one simple motion, unlike typical tire carriers. The installation for this set up should take approximately one hour, and you only need a good set of sockets, no specialty tools. Currently trying to install this at the house. An hour is an understatement unless you just slap it on. No instructions in my box either, word on the forums is you need to call Tech support and they will email you a set of instructions. The product itself is of excellent quality visually and the parts have weight to them.

Coming back to this video to warn everyone wanting to get the tire carrier... the bumper works great HOWEVER... the carrier is crazy noisy. Offroading it is so loud it sounds like the tire will come off. I've taken it a part to tighten everything down still noise. It connects to the tailgate via a turn buckle. Even when tightened very noisy! Looking to replace with a tub mounted solution for my 35 spare tire. I've had it for 2 years now and definitely dont recommend unless you only run a pavement princess jeep...

I have this tire carrier mounted on my XRC Gen II bumper. Worth every penny, wife and kids can open the tailgate easily. It does rattle a little when hardcore off roading but most tire carriers do.

I think this tire carrier is sweet! It looks nice and sturdy and has plenty of mounting points for different accessories. The fact that your wife and kids can open it with ease is a huge benefit as well. I used to have a tire carrier on my YJ and it was extremely tough to open. I've also come to terms that there will always be a rattle on a Jeep somewhere or another. When I drive my buddies around and my Jeep makes an odd noise they usually freak out while I'm just driving along keeping my cool haha. Thanks for the feedback! -Jake

Just had this installed along with the SRC front and rear bumpers. Smittybilt did not include Instructions! The Jeep shop estimated 5.5 hrs to install. It took close to 10! Glad I didn't try it myself. Looks and works great though. Lots of compliments from the guys in the shop but for them it was a hard day.

Mine had instructions. They'd have probably been more useful if I'd set them on fire and used the light to work by for a few minutes. Most of the time I think that it would be more helpful for them to take a nice color picture of the finished product from several angles and tell people to lay the parts out and figure it out. I usually accomplish more that way.

You made me feel good. It has been a while since I installed it. It took me, the brain, and my non-mechanical friend, the brawn, a couple days to finish this if Zi remember right but I had never installed anything I hadn’t designed myself on a Jeep before. I had to call Smittybilt to ask one question and to order some replacement grease nipples since I broke one. They sent a couple for free and were very nice on the phone. I have a 2016 JKU Rubicon Hard Rock Edition so I installed it thru the Hard Rock steel bumper premade hole to the Jeep frame, I never got around to reinstalling the 3rd brake light and have gotten no tickets. Smittybilt does a lousy job of marketing because the main selling point of this tire carrier is the way it looks with two red Rotopax mounted on it, which they never show a photo of, and the fact if you mount it correctly, unlike how a Four Wheel Parts employee mounted it in his Wrangler, you won’t need to buy the lockable version of Rotopax mount or need a key. Just locking your rear tailgate prevents someone from being able to swing it open to remove the Rotopax. Perhaps that us because in my case I ignored Smittybilt and went with two 3 gallon Rotopax instead of two 2 gallon ones. I am still using my factory 33” tires and wheels and don’t plan on going above 35s so how can Smittybilt say I am limited to 2 gallon Rotos? 37” tall tires are allowed in this I think and would add a ton more of weight and the tire weight is centered off center of the tire carrier vertical arm so it causes torsion whereas the Rotopax are almost centered on the arm so almost no torsion. Installation was a pain. I had to reposition the height of everything a time or two to get it to work but it does work great. I think I ended up putting the Rotopax mounts up very high. It looks so cool. BTW, With the 3 gallon I don’t think there is room to operate the rear windshield wipers but with this blocking most of the window who needs a windshield wiper back there? I disconnected my wiring for it. I love having 6 gallons capacity. Stock up at cheap gas places too. Add gas to my other vehicles to save taking them to gas station. The spout is too hard to use so get the right shaped funnel to use with the Jeep gas tank cap cause when full it takes two hands to hold cans.

Awesome review! Finally someone did a quality video. For anyone with this, I have one since they hit the market and I've had to tighten the pivot arm multiple multiple times to take ply and slip out of it.....any pointers anyone has come across to help keep it nice and tight but allow the door to open and close easily?

I have a 2012 Rubicon with a 2in lift. I love my XRC front bumper and I want to get the rear to match... but I'm having trouble finding a single action tire carrier for my 35s. As I've seen in the comments that this version doesn't accommodate lifts... can anyone make a suggestion? I'd prefer to stay in the Smittybilt brand.

My 2015 Jeep's stock tire carrier is all one piece. I cannot reuse the third brake light.

I know this was designed to work with the xrc bumpers, and the 10A/Hard Rock bumpers. But in theory, could this fit on a stock Sport model bumper as long as a hole was cut in the correct spot to allow the arm to slide into the frame bracket?

Hey chucka74. I'm sure you could make this work with a lot of fabrication involved. You would have to really make sure you fabricate the support points exactly like the Smittybilt bumper. However if you're good with a welder or torch then I think it is possible! Personally I would just buy the bumper though because it's much stronger than the factory bumper. -Jake

It’s nice but it rattles way too much. Get’s annoying. If you’re on a hill or sloped driveway, it;s super heavy and hard to close the rear door.

That’s for sure about the weight to open and close. I have to use tow hands to push the tire in. I was hoping after two years it would become easier but nope. In a way it’s a good thing I guess but damn. It’s heavy.

Unfortunately it won't Jake. It looks like the mounting "rod" that attaches the tire carrier to the tailgate would end up binding in the little opening it goes through. If you have any more questions just let me know! -Jake

Hey Daniel! I know you can buy the 10th anniversary bumpers which are the same as the 75th anniversary ones. They cost a pretty penny though. They come in at around $1,400 from what I've found online. For that price you could get a decent aftermarket bumper and have some money left over for more mods! -Jake

Where do you get off saying it’s an hour install?! Was yours already put together in the box when you got it?! It took me and my buddies 5 hours to install. The instructions were horrible. Those instructions need to be revamped. It was useless! I also had bolts missing! Other than those setbacks, this carrier is very well built and it does work and look great. Next time don’t exaggerate the products that you review.

got this on a rubicon I bought ..the turn buckle on the rear door side seems to be worn out ..alot of play ..every little bump I hit on the street ,makes a hell of alot of noise..and the door isn't easy to close ..thinking someone did not install it correctly.

Jeep has got to go to the dealer in the morning anyway ,switch board went out on all my switches..it's under warranty, since they sale smittybilt products there ,I'm going to see if they can fix it right.

Awesome John!! Glad you could get it taken care of by the dealership. One of the things I like about the Smittybilt Gen2 Bumper is how you can mount the Hi Lift Jack and other accessories right to it. I'm not sure exactly what size bolt is used, but I found a great article online specifically about mounting the jack! Freaking dealership installed mine, and now after a year the bolt and washers fell off the pivot point and where lost on the freeway somewhere. My question is, does anyone carry those washers and bolt to hold the tire carrier in place. Called smittybilt and gave an answer that they carry them no longer and if so they would charge me 130.00 for a couple of washers and a bolt..come on..So now I'm screwed. Where can I find those spare washers and bolt for the bottom of the pivot..help a disabled veteran. Since smittybilt cant.

Hey Kevin, If you look on the passenger side you'll see an upright post with multiple holes drilled into it. That is where you can run two bolts through and affix your Hi Lift jack to the carrier. You can checkout this image as a reference! (goo.gl/ehWltC) -Jake
