I am from Coldwater, MI and my father was a police officer there when this happened. I have been to that school house several times as a kid, both before and after the incident. Marilyn was my high school guidance counselor. I went to school with their kids and I worked in the attendance office when this all went down. When Dennis was on the run and no one knew where he was, I remember the kids names were changed on all documentation in the school to protect them in case he came back for them. A few weeks after that day, the kids were pulled out of school all together and moved with Marilyn's family. The Monday following the day this happened, I was at the police station with my father while they had the APB out for him. This was a HUGE deal in the tiny town of 10,000 people. It still makes me cringe when I think about how all of this went down.

I was 5 when this happened. My older sister was friends with one of the Depue girls. I remember all the chaos. My sister took off to go to their house to make sure her friend was ok when word started getting around via landlines. My mom was worried about my sister and trying to get her to come home and not go over to their house. I'm pretty sure he had been going psycho for quite some time. I remember something about tunnels being found under the house. It's been over 30 years and I've only had a couple conversations with my family about it. I remember when the Unsolved Mysteries story came out, my whole family (and probably everyone in town) was gathered around the TV. One of the victims in the Leonard Lake and Charles Ng killings killings was also from Coldwater, MI area. I'm pretty sure the story of Lake and Ng was the inspiration for the movie "Gothika."

I don't think money is why no marker was ever placed for Marilyn. Her parents were alive and she had friends and coworkers. You can get a basic marker and not spend a lot of money. This case became famous. I suspect her family simply did not want it to become a shrine or have people damaging it. I do think the cemetery should keep better records and have good plot information. Even if they have to use a ground radar and look for a grave shaft. Besides, it's been over 30 years now. It may be time to put up a small marker.

Sometimes the families of murder victims, especially high profile murders, will opt not to put a marker or headstone because of the concern that it may attract morbid "tourists" who come to visit the grave to take pictures for purposes of exploitation, or even steal things for souvenirs. I remember her. She was a secretary at the high school in coldwater, michigan. I used to live down the road from the school. He ditched her body and mile away. The only thing at the school was the sheet. He killed her at their home. Pushed her down the stairs in front of their kids. Nobody in the community talks about it. Very sad.

She was actually a counselor at CHS not a secretary. She was my counselor in the 70’s. Will never forget this horrific tragedy.

@@susank.9223 Oh I thought she was a secretary because her of where her desk was at in the office. I didn't go to coldwater for very long, only a semester. Yes, very sad. Even my ex in laws wouldn't talk about it.

This chillingly reminds me of an incident my wife and I experienced around 1995/96 in Titusville FL. Before any of our kids were born. My wife and I would enjoy the local wildlife trails which were plentiful. This particular day we were driving on a trail called Blackpoint wildlife drive. We were in a 1980 Olds Custom Crusier wagon. The roads in these trails were rough and rocky but no 4x4 was needed. Approximately 3/4 of mile in, as a turn begins to straighten out, we see a full size custom van in the distance with both its rear doors open. It was an older male returning from this body of water. The second he spotted us, he panicked, slammed both rear doors shut, and high tailed it out of there at leaving a cloud of dust behind. I floored it after him but our beat up station wagon had little clearance, and I was at risk of damaging it and we were broke AF at the time (still are 😂). That van had to have sustained some damage as fast as he was going. We kept going after him but he was gone. I was unarmed mainly because that is Federal Property. We never went back to check, and never called the police, never saw his tag either. If TPD is reading this and you have a cold case homicide body recovery there, we saw the guy.

That couple gave a short interview about the incident. Was so gruesome and if we could could smell fear, that couple was wearing it like perfume. Years after it still terrified them. You could see it in their faces.

What a sad story, I watched all the Jeeper Creeper movies. Of course, the first movie is always the best. My question is why is there a school out in the middle of nowhere? Was there families living in the area & kids went there? How long was the school opened & then left abandoned? Just weird to me & eerie. Great video by the way, Chris. RIP Marilyn 💐 you are not forgotten.

Australia has lots of these abandoned schools and churches in the middle of nowhere. Communities long gone from where the industrys dried up or the farming went sour.
