Monsieur Africain It is. It is a desktop replacement that sits on my desk at work. I almost never move it. I MUCH prefer my zbook 14. its not as powerful, but weighs half as much.

I have one of these with the AMD Firepro. It's not so much a laptop as it is a portable workstation and they are heavy. The keyboard requires quite a bit of pressure to release and it can pop out abruptly so be prepared to catch it. I'm running Fedora 22 on mine and it works great.

grayswandir47 It really is a desktop replacement. I use all 3, the 14, 15, and 17, and the 17 is a beast to carry around, so I simply don't.

I have this same laptop, and I seem to not have the 2nd hdd caddy for the 2nd hdd. I have one installed only and would like to add another hdd using the 2nd slot. Where do I get the extra bay? Thanks!

+Anthony Tucker I don't have a G2, but if the G2 is anything like the first generation, You remove the back > remove the CD/DVD drive > and then push through the hole that is there on the back of the keyboard and it pops out. Now the first time you do it it is VERY stiff, and doesn't want to come out, so you don't want to apply so much force that you bend it, but it will take more force than you expect.

I use the 17 G2 to run programs such as MAYA 2015. As of late ive been wanting to upgrade to an Nvidia gtx 970 using an external adaptor to get extremely fast render times, but i cant seem to find if the 17 G2 has and express or mini pci-e slot.

+Son of Bardock I do not believe it is possible to upgrade the video on this laptop. The current video card is soldered onto the motherboard.

I know this is super late, but I figured I'd go ahead and reply anyways. Yes, this laptop comes with an ExpressCard 54 port, as well as a Thunderbolt 2 port.

I still use my first gen nearly daily. Not every day, that's my zbook 14, but just about every day, and edit most of my videos it. its just so powerful and fast.

The zbook 17 G2 has a faulty expresscard slot and just doesn't provide enough power to run an external graphics card. I now have a geforce 1070 connected via thunderbolt 2 and works amazingly for programs like maya and zbrush. its also great for gaming too.

Is there anything out there with very similar specs to this but much lighter. I currently have this computer for college (3d animation) and its a killer on my back/shoulders.

Cassandra Miranda This is a "desktop replacement" and not a portable machine. If you are doing 3d animation, I would look at something with an awesome graphics card, but is still thin and light. You're going to give up max memory (8-16 gigs vs 32 gigs) you're going to give up expandability (only 1 M.2 / SSD vs up to 4 total hard drives) and you are not going to have as powerful of CPU. Everything is a compromise. Jeeppatriotchannel thanks, this is the computer the school sells to students in a package deal. It really is awesome, but being an art student and having to carry not only the laptop but art supplies aswell...sometimes for 2 miles, is really killing me. Thanks for your help.

NP. that's why I went with a zbook 14 personally, Its super light, and has the right about of guts for what I need. I would recommend it, but it doesn't have that powerful of GPU, Shoot me an email with the software you use, and maybe I can set up a test and see how it does. [e-mail]

I mean, it depends on what and how you program. If you’re just doing powershell scripts, it’s overkill. If you are doing web and database development and need to run multiple VMs it’s perfect.

Alfonso Martínez Moreno Once you unscrew the two screws holding it in, and remove the optical drive, you just push it out. the first time is very hard for it to come out. I would populate the two slots under the keyboard, as to never have to pop it off again.

I have no idea for sure, since I no longer have this laptop, but I've never had a system that could ONLY take just a 128gb ssd. If it could take one, it could take them all. It probably has more to do with what was available for sale from HP at the time, than any technical limitation. I've had really good luck with Kingston SSDs: amzn.to/2Kv0zPB

Its a great machine, so I appreciatte too this laptop has not a frecuently dust clean.... may will overheating..... mané has a SSD M.2 2260 256GB from factory, and I installed a SNANDISK SSD 2TB in a SATA bay...... and a HDD 1TB ..... it support to 3.2 TB

I personally buy from places that have at least a 30 - 90 day return policy for defective items, since the vast majority of the time, if they work, they work unless physically damaged. I personally do not have experience with the G3, but that seems like a really nice system. It probably wouldn't be good for gaming, but should be perfect for any business application. The real question is, what are they asking for it? can you get similar performance from a new system? Like, if they are asking $1000 for it, you're probably better off getting something new, if it is $300, go for it, you're not wasting any money at all.

@@AICvideo Thanks for your reply, He is asking for around 520 euros but I think he will accept 450 euros ( it has 1TB NVMe SSD and 1TB HDD, ) I am not ordering this laptop online but first I will be seeing it physically in person to check if everything is OK. I will be greatfull to you if u tell what to look in the laptop's hardware and how to check if its ok ( I want to run some benchmarks but that may take a while so I want to check it faster its CPU and GPU to make sure they are working "properly" ). I think I am unnecessarily cautious but better safe than sorry.

I got rid of the zbook 17, simply because I built a desktop that was more powerful, but the 14 I still have and use daily. Still love it, great laptop, super light. I did finally replace the battery a few weeks ago, and put on new thermal paste and clean the fins really well. runs happy all day when I'm using it.

Alright, I'm currently still using the predecessor to these ZBook, the 8770W, and so far it has proven its worth as my go-to notebook and especially being more reliable than the Dell Latitude E6540. Funny thing about the battery, mine are still factory originals and somehow it holds charge for about an hour. Which battery do you recommend for these machines (original HP replacements are all out of stock)?

I just go to amazon, sort by prime, sort by highest rating, and go that route. Most of the batteries (even the "factory" ones) are all built in the same place in China, so as long as nobody complains of it catching on fire, I'm good. I just made sure to get one that was rated at the same rating as the factory one. They come in all flavors, and some are half what the factory one was.

that was quick, thanks, kinda sucks though, my old HP pavillion 6C00 has it and the 9pin. found this Z , its really cheap, has everything I can see, it does have a kind of weak video, an AMD FirePro 6100M with only 2g ram. HP ZBook 17 G2 - 17.3" - Core i7- 4910 2.9GHz - 32GB RAM - 256GB SSD, 500GB HD G6Z41AV not sure if I want to bother with it though. I'd rather use HDMI than the 9pin

I play games on mine, and it is plenty powerful enough for what it is. at least if you set your expectations. as far as the display port, you can get a display to HDMI cable for cheap, like under $12 for a 10 foot cable. amzn.to/2l2y9lI. I use mine literally every day for gaming/video editing/picture editing, etc. My wife has taken over my desktop for her main machine, and I use this as my main machine and actually probably would never go back to my desktop, despite its "better" graphics.

Yeah OK, not sure what that cable is or would connect to, I have my Samsung 27in monitor connected via a HDMI cable to my laptop, but this laptop HAS a HDMI plug, So how does this HDMI cable your talking about connect to this Zbook if it doesn't have a HDMI connection? Unless you mean one end is 9pin and the other is HDMI, but I don't think that would work the same. I see there are also ThunderBolt to HDMI, guess that would be the same, but maybe a bit faster throughput. What ya think about that AMD Fire Pro 6100M video?

HDMI =/= Display port =/= 9pin. they are all different styles of ports. Display port is a newer format than HDMI that supports the same things that HDMI does (like sound over the same cable), but also higher resolutions and colors. Its a more "professional" port. But a cheap adaptor will allow you to go from the display port on the laptop to HDMI on the computer. the link I posted: amzn.to/2l2y9lI is a link to amazon where you can buy such a cable/adaptor. They are not very expensive. I do this every time I want to plug in my laptop into our TV so I can play minecraft and my kids can watch. the small port, at least on mine, is not a thunderbolt, it is just a mini display port. So it has 3 total ports to plug monitors into, the 9pin Dsub/vga port. The Full sized Display port, and the Mini display port. the two display ports run the same interface, they are just different sizes. Even if it is a thunderbolt port (it was optional upgrade I didn't pay for). the data transfer speed does not effect the video transfer speeds. I.E. you won't get faster framerates as you are limited by GPU and not the cable speeds.

cmon the cpu and gpu use like 150w of power what did you expect lol. no, its not overheating youre just using it at your lap or you have it on a desk with nothing lifting up the notebook. The noise is because one fan two components. Tho you might also have dust :)
