Quote... Beck, who has long had a reputation as a difficult laughs loud and long at the thought of Tap’s gormless guitarist Nigel Tufnel (played by Christopher Guest) who does indeed sport Beck’s distinctive shaggy cut. “It was the wrong colour but pretty close. They’d studied me but it’s mostly from bands like Black Sabbath because I never wore make-up or spandex pants. When I watched it I was the only one laughing in the cinema.”

It was by this time (early 1980s) Jeff Beck fans sensed he was reinventing himself every few years. The transitions from JBG to Rough & Ready to Blow By Blow and then to There And Back made it crystal clear that JB was not your typical guitarist. JB was pressing onward to his next guitar adventure. There was no one like him.

Not sure what all the complaints are about Annie Nightingale....the interview looks ok to me. You have to appreciate that Jeff can be a tricky customer when it comes to being interviewed. As a former devout hot rodder, and lover of all things Beck, Ms Nightingale seemed to have little empathy for JB. The naked bagpiper, apparently sent by JB, may have been a distractor to allow an escape route if needed. Geniuses and social cues don't translate well it seems.

I'm trying to imagine being an American touring England back in the day. I went to England in 1997, and everywhere we went the food sucked. As a teenager, the only time I was able to really get a full meal was when I came across a McDonalds, so leaving London was a real gamble. I swear, the mustard over there could peel the paint off a car. The U.K. was notorious for bad food like that for decades. What it must have been like in the 70's and 80's, the prospects scare the life out of me. I hear it's much better now. Couldn't have gotten any worse, I'll tell you that. For an Italian American like Carmine Appice, I really feel sorry for the guy.

Jeff took a bit of umbrage at basically being labeled a 60's relic by the interviewer - who shot back with a snarky remark of; "sorry, 'fraid so - you have to live with it" - but no doubt the start of the 80's was a difficult, transitional time for artists & bands who had reigned supreme all through the 70's - but obviously Beck was in a class by himself and he always transcended trends & eras in music ..
