Watching this and thinking about what a focused life spent working on cars and playing guitar means, I think it explains why Jeff Beck has lasted longer and has more life behind his work than his contemporaries. He's not spending days partying with people whom he doesn't care about, and he's not lording his money and ego around in order to pretend he's a big shot or gather exaggerated acclaim, and he isn't trying to hide away to avoid 'regular' folks and fans. Beck is just do focused and driven on his interests that he can't be bothered to waste his time on frivolous pursuits. He is himself 24/7, and that's why his music is always solid, if nothing else.

I grew up in SoCal. I got my first guitar when I was 13. Two months later I got my first car, it was a "55 Ford Victoria, but I'd been working on cars since I was 8. So I worked on the car all day and when it got dark I played guitar. By the time I was 18 I had built Crazy Horsepower and raced it at Lions on the weekends and then the garage band I was in got a gig at Under the Ice House on Sunset. The band became Reign which was a well known Beatles tribute band. I left and pursued blues guitar and my hot rod was the number two car in the NHRA Modified Production "B" class. I sold it to George Barris for double what was in it. I've always been around both. R.I.P. Jeff, I'll always play your riffs.

Did your Beatle's tribute band play at Disneyland in 1980? If so I have seen you play. I can't recall if the band at Disneyland was Reign or Rain. I have also been a Beck fan since age 13 when Blow by Blow was released. Last time I saw Beck play was this past October in Cincinnati. First time I saw him live was his tour with SRV.

Top musicians like Beck are born inventors. Music is simply one channel Look up the interview on how he made his first guitar-picture frame molding and plywood He built his first guitar from photos About 12 years old I'm telling you stories from interviews where I hear it directly out of his mouth, not a wannabe reporter or author writing an unauthorized biography He's out there over the years interviewing on BBC, UK. Check out his interviews, there's a lot of them over the decades But I've known other musicians along his lines, music is just one of thousands of skills and talents they have-because their inventors... Not only do they write & play music, but build their own instruments. Sir Brian May, Queen-2007 ph.d. in astrophysics. Build his famous guitar, Big Red, or something like that Mick Jagger already had a degree from the London School of economics Eddie Van Halen built his guitars-very well-read and educated. Gene Simmons went back to college, business degree Steely dan-those three are geek geniuses Steve winwood, is a pig farmer-who sounds like he should have a PhD in English literature, so well-read he was kicked out of music school, but got an honorary degree from the Berklee school of music Jeff Beck tells a story on how he was asked to leave his first guitar lesson-I won't spoil it for you. Get it straight out of his mouth, he tells it best The only one I can't explain? Keith Richards 😁 (I still think it's an act, he & Mick are laughing all the way to the bank!) These guys invent sounds, bend notes & construct instruments only they play. Les Paul was a favorite go-to for top musicians, he would custom guitars Actually his wife, Mary Ford, had more to do with the actual invention of the sound But they become jukeboxes-when they go on tour, everybody wants to hear the albums. They have to have other interests & creative outlets. Or their music will die. Because it's an "invention" to them. How unusual is it for a young kid to do this?: Jeff Beck stated in an interview that he loved going into his mother's music room, lifting the lid on the piano-putting his foot on the sustain pedal, then reaching around and plucking the strings... He said the way it sounded in the piano frame was "magical" to him. He didn't want to put his fingers on the keys to do the work, he didn't want to play piano he wanted to do the work of the hammers, put his fingers directly on the strings -so he went out and built himself a guitar I had an oddball musician kid-he got ahold of my violin bow, shredded it to pieces Yep- Jimmy Page dazed and confused! Dazed and confused was written with Jeff Beck under The Yardbirds, released under led Zeppelin You got to check out his interviews-there's tons of books, but listen to him. Enjoy-you'll get yourself an education far beyond 12th grade
@jamesmckay1150 Жыл бұрын
@@TheFoolintherainn Very true of a lot of top musicians. A lot of musicians have alternative skills outside their musical skills such as painting and various artistic endeavors. Eddie Van Halen certainly been one of them and his ability to build his own guitars and even amplifiers though admittedly he has always said he ruined other guitars in improving some. Mick Jagger never got a degree from the London school of economics as he only attended for a very short period. He is a great business minded individual tho as well as being a fantastic harp player and decent guitar player and all around great musician. I personally find it quite interesting that one of Jeff Beck‘s talents was his ability to wrench on automobiles, not something you here much of other musicians. Not to say that they don’t have interest in automobiles but usually do not get down and dirty with pulling engines and rebuilding engines and motors and such. Let’s toss in Bill Wyman for his ability with electronics and being the first of any of the Stones to have an interest in video recording, i.e. personally archiving the Rolling Stones. Musicians have many other talents besides the abilities to write, play and perform live.
@TheFoolintherainn Жыл бұрын
@@jamesmckay1150 Well I'm sure you remember, growing up with these guys-going back to the 1960s & 70s, we clearly picked up symphony rock, Tolstoy, history from our music. We were forced to pick it apart, because the Catholic church was calling our music devil worship music LOL! So as soon as somebody bands something, you know... You probably remember Metallica, making it a point to learn led Zeppelin lyrics just to piss off your parents! We weren't so focused on those college degrees. Mick is a very smart businessman-I guess my point is, he was accepted at a top economic school-they didn't let anybody in there he spoke of the London School of economics in an old interview... He basically said he learned all he needed and he wanted to apply it in the world. That's how I took it, according to his words I figured they gave him some honorary degree, but the fact that he even got admitted? That would be the point that you jumped way over!!! I don't believe anything I see written only listen to what comes out of the horses mouths I'm actually a more of an economist-the news I've gotten on Mick Jagger comes through the Wall Street journal and financial publications. Cuz money don't lie, even when Mick does! Mick Jagger grossly understates both rolling Stones and his personal financial value. He's worth triple what he puts down on paper... And that's why he's got a lot of The rolling Stones paraphernalia warehoused. To keep its value from increasing until his great-grandchildren cash in Did you know the reason you can't get your hands on alotta rolling Stone paraphernalia very often, is because he's bought it all up and has it warehoused! I knew someone who was his roadie 1983-87 the biggest thing they had to lug around for Mick Jagger were trunks full of books-he insisted on traveling with his library. That came from someone I know who probably wouldn't make up crap like that... Cuz his Roadies were pretty quiet people They were not allowed to party! I've had genius musicians in my family life and they don't get along well in the real world. It isn't they are musicians and then they have other talents? They're extremely talented people-this is what gets them attention, it's something that they enjoy interacting with other people, cuz otherwise they don't They don't do well in formalized education settings. Boring, too slow, stuff they learned in kindergarten Well-enjoy your memory lane back to high school... I assume since you're an expert on all these musicians, that you actually grew up in the era?
