Unless you can play a Jeff Berlin solo, like the one from Water on the Brain from the Holdsworth Road Games album, and a Jaco solo maybe his recorded takes of Donna Lee or Chromatic Fantasy, then stop comparing the two. I met Jaco and I studied with Berlin. I transcribed and played everything they had recorded up till about 1987 and can tell you exactly who I feel is the more advanced and why, but not in this silly competitive way some of you’re engaged in. Let’s just say that from 1976-1987 these two were the most advanced players of this genre by a fairly wide margin (of known bassists). But, yes, one did have a facility that the other did not quite have. It’s just nice that this rare moment was recorded. Be thankful for that. Back then I was unsure they had ever met but Jaco told me they had. Glad they did.
@SteveSteeleSoundSymphony6 жыл бұрын
C Mainten I’m not in a position to say which player is “better.” I find that very disrespectful anyways. However, if one wants to compare their techniques and learn something from what they attempted as players that’s a discussion that doesn’t insult these two great players’ legacy’s. Everything I said is true and I can answer and back up any question or comment I made but only in the context of learning. Seems like you would get that.

I encourage anyone who is curious to how the entire jam unfolded to check out the link to the complete (audio)recording that Jeff Lee so generously shared. Jaco gets just as much solo space as Jeff B and sounds great considering the circumstances. In fact they switch between being the accompanist/soloist throughout. At some moments in the jam the boundary that traditionally distinguishes those roles disappears entirely, which is not surprising knowing these two. The musical result is very interesting regardless, and I'm very happy that the recording exists. These two are two of my biggest musical heroes and having them share the stage to exchange their musical philosophies has historical value indeed. I think anyone would agree that Jaco was not at his best here and find themselves wondering what the result would have been like had we heard him in this setting with the skill level he possessed in his peak years about 7-10 years prior to this, and you could perhaps question Jeff's motivations for inviting a down and out Jaco that he met by coincidence on the streets of LA. Jeff was and still is known as being among the most dedicated "practicers" in the bass world, (almost to the degree of compulsion) and it wouldn't surprise me if he had spent considerable time on shedding "Invitation" specifically... And knowing the struggles Jaco faced at this time that led him to go for long periods almost without touching his instrument there hadn't been a more ideal time up til this point for Jeff to "upstage" him if that was his goal. You could argue that there is some evidence outside of what I just mentioned to confirm this in the way that Jeff occasionally apes Jaco's phrases as if to mock him. Or maybe I'm just imagining things..Anyway, that's my take on it and like I said DO check out the clip of Jeff Lee's audio recording that he linked to in the comment section. This video is only a snippet of the jam that actually lasts for over 13 minutes in its entirety.

Jeff Berlin is a phenomenal player, but unlike Stanley Clarke or Jaco he’s not known as a great composer of bass driven and inspired music. Clarke and Jaco wrote and composed music specifically for the bass that elevated and revolutionized the instrument to new heights. Even when Stanley went into more commercial directions the bass was still central melodically and harmonically. This is what tremendously separates Stanley and Jaco from Jeff Berlin. I’m familiar with Jeff’s Champion and Pump It solo albums of the mid 80’s and that’s my case and point. Clarke and Jaco played unique and good sounding music for the bass.

Jaco was so out of his depth here. Jeff totally wipes him out but it's a shame it seemed like a completion. Jaco did in effect commit suicide. He wanted to go out in a blaze of glory in his seriously disturbed bipolar mind, so he attacked bouncers at a night club, trying to use karate on them with the intention of being beaten to death and that's what happened. Very sad and bizarre to say the least. Jeff Berlin has always bettered Jaco in every way.....And he's still alive!

Sorry, but I'm not feeling Jeff's playing on things like this. He's always up at the dusty end. Might as well be a guitarist. I feel the same way about Stanley Clark but to a lesser extent.

Jaco was good for his time but there's 10 y.o. that can play circles around him now.
