As a 14 year old bassist, this guy is my hero. Watching this solo for the first time changed my life. Jaco completely changed, and greaty influenced how I play bass now, and it taught me not to be Jaco, but to be me. R.I.P the legend, the GOAT, Jaco Pastorius, and cheers to the greatest bass solo of all time.

Masonbass- Keep at it my young brother. Keep practicing the bass as much as humanly possible- you are at that great, great age where muscle memory and musical memory fuses so wonderfully. Dig on all kinds of music- jazz, classical, rock, world music, hip hop- and listen, listen, listen closely. Train your ears young brother- I'm sorry to go on like a crazy old person but I started playing guitar around your age and it has been infinitely rewarding to me. Let music be infinitely rewarding to you!! You are headed in the best possible direction. ☮❤🕉

As a 37-year old drummer, I CANNOT think of a greater electic bass player than Jaco, maybe Niels Henning Orsted-Petersen. He mic'd and amped up his bass.

Not sure how you can possibly consider this performance to be Jaco’s greatest solo of all time?? It’s extremely disjointed and not at all melodically and even to the point of not being all that musical. Ask any NON-musician if they enjoy it and I can just about guarantee they’ll say “No!”. For one of, by far and away, his absolute greatest solos, just listen to (Used To Be A) Cha-Cha! That is by far one of his most original, musical sounding, melodically beautiful and just outright incredible awesome to listen to solos EVER. There’s none of the bullshit technical crap that he does in this performance, which is NOT musical at all! The easiest way to tell is by asking a non-muso what they think of the performance. To a person, they’ll a,most ALL say that this is just a bunch of random notes at times, it certainly doesn’t have any themes, variations on themes, tension and release, etc, as per all the greatest solos from musicians on ANY instrument. This is DEFINITELY NOT one of Jaco’s greatest solos! Indeed, I wouldn’t even rank it as a decent solo, it’s just him playing his own cliches. Seems like he is just playing crap that he’s done a million time before and there’s NOTHING new whatsoever in this recording. I love Jaco as much as anyone but this solo shouldn’t even be considered when talking about his best/greatest solos of all time. This is more a cacophony than anything much else.

The love of God is in Christ only. Romans 8:39 KJV - Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Ephesians 5:5-6 KJV - For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

Two different styles I know but Mick Karn of Japan was some fretless player , Mick had a style that has never been replicated by anyone ! Mick also refused to listen to Jaco, as he didn't want to be influenced. I'm sure they're up in bass heaven jamming and sharing each others ideas . Two legends who will always be remembered 🙏

I watched him do this from the 3rd row in 1980 in Long Beach CA. When we saw it, he beat the bass on the floor with his strap, like whipped it, at the very end, it bounced when he whacked it and dust billowed up from the stage. Never saw anything so intense on stage before or since.

Back in the late 1970's(Not sure which year) my friend and I sat 2nd row at Avery Fisher Hall in NYC to see Jaco and Pat Metheny. First, Jaco played for 20 minutes to a half an hour and did a solo very similar to this one. It was amazing. Then Pat Metheny came out with his band and did a great set. Then, Pat and Jaco, just the two of them came out to play together. It was so good. After a little while, and this is no joke, management turned the lights on, someone stepped out on stage and stopped Pat and Jaco and told everyone in the hall that time was up and the show was over. We could not believe it. Both Pat and Jaco were stunned but that was it.

Art is not required to be "good," to follow the rules of the medium, to make you happy. ART invokes an EMOTION. Don't try to map art to what you think it should be. Let it in, and see what it does to you. Do you go to a gallery and say "I hate that painting because it's not a landscape, and I know a guy who makes good landscapes." SUPERFICIAL nits. Dunning Kruger says those who understand the least think they are the most knowledgeable. I don't know shit about music. I really don't even know why I'm typing this. But that was art. Pure art, as only a suffering artist can create. Doesn't mean I ever want to listen to it again. Probably don't. But I had that experience, and will take it with me.

I think this is the greatest "live" electric bass solo in a semi-rock presentation and setting and I would compare this to a John Entwistle, Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, Billy Sheehan or even a Neil Peart drummer type of vibe in terms of that "rock" presentation, not in terms of playing. To call this the greatest bass solo does Jaco and other truly great bassists injustice. This was a great live bass solo performance and a great 'stage act', which he would always do during this period with Weather Report 's Mr. Gone tour and even with Joni Mitchell. I saw this in NYC in Avery Fisher Hall with Weather Report
