Sad that so many very talented people are so hurt, and come to tragic ends. I've always been a fan of Graham Parsons...... and he threw away his life for drugs.....and then there was that whole fight over his body, and the failed funeral pyre in the desert. Both of these talented people should be making music today. 🎶 the musicians they would have become if they lived.

Thanks so very much for your thoughtful reaction to this song. My Dad actually produced this album & was very close with Jeff… We all still feel his loss very sharply today. He is certainly an artist taken before his time ~ Again thanks so much for this review. 💜

Very glad you did this reaction. Because for me this song’s hushed, almost quietly reverent style is amazing. Some reviewers have also labeled it as “now-legendary”. And also, apparently a lot of amateur singers have used this as their audition song for shows like “American Idol” and “The Voice” (which I do not watch). So that should tell you something. Hoping to impress the judges and make the cut. Then to top it all off he holds that falsetto note for an incredibly long time. Leonard Cohen (bass-baritone and possibly basso profundo) composed the original (who I’m becoming a big fan of) and Jeff Buckley (tenor) recorded a rendition for the ages.

Leonard Cohen wrote this song (many versions of it with different lyrics and intent). Cohen attended the funeral of Buckley's dad (Tim Buckley, also an incredible vocalist) and was allegedly blown away when he heard Jeff sing for the first time at that funeral. Jeff then asked Cohen for permission to perform Hallelujah and Cohen agreed. Jeff selected the lyrics from all the various versions of it Cohen had performed and composed this piece. Jeff was reportedly scared about Cohen hearing it because he'd made the song more sexual in the lyrics he'd selected, but Cohen was amazed with Jeff's take on it and has allegedly said it's the best version of the song.

Hallelujah was originally written by Canadian singer Leonard Cohen, released on his album Various Positions (1984). It didn't go big until later when recorded by John Cale, which then inspired a recording by Jeff Buckley..... which inspired many including Myles Kennedy to perform it (once using Jeff Buckley's actual Fender Telecaster guitar kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmnVh5WHbtemrpY ). This has been one of the most covered (and over-covered in singing "shows") songs ever.

Original: Leonard Cohen. Although as I recently saw in a recent trailer for a documentary, the song kind of became a alive on itself, almost like a traditional song, although it was written in the 80s (in a period of three years).

I really appreciate your breakdown of the song. Regarding this version vs others…my recollection could be off here, but as others have stated, the original is by Leonard Cohen, but it was unknown in any sort of mainstream capacity until Buckley covered it. Even then, it was years before it caught on. After it did (again, as I recall), that’s when you started to see all of the choir and orchestral versions pop up. Somebody can correct me if I’m off.

@Jason G. Then what is? What Jeff Buckley did with Hallelujah is similar to what Jimi Hendrix did with All Along The Watchtower. They both own those respective songs. The only reason why people cover this song obsessively is because of Buckley’s rendition; which is what basically everyone models their covers after.
