Well your point that it never resolved and didn't go to D is exactly why this song is soo good. Lover you should have come over... But they didn't... So the song being about a love not resolved and the longing in that... Means the music emotionally resonates in a very cogent manner with the emotion within the song... Love the reactions Dave keep em up x

The lack of resolution musically speaking could also be intended to reinforce the lyrical theme of an unresolved romantic entanglement.

Jake, I’m a long time Buckley fanatic and I’ve found quickly once I got into theory years back that Buckley often doesn’t resolve chords or he draws it out before resolving back. I think it’s one of the things that makes his music unique

It is easy to mock emotive singers. But Jeff Buckley's emotive singing, accompanied with his insightful far beyond his years lyrics, his arranging abilities make him impossible to not take seriously. His sincerity is undeniable, and it is in every performance he ever gave.

Maybe my favorite Jeff Buckley's song. Usually the studio version of a song is better for a first time reaction, but for Jeff Buckley I always prefer the live versions. When playing live he really gets loose with his vocals. The versions on the "Mystery White Boy" live album are great. So I never came back to the "Grace" (original) album. In this song he sounds so restrained

You're one of these rare individuals who are gifted or cursed with the inability to bullshit how they hear music. I watch a lot of reactioneers who I can tell if they are legit or real. Most of them are not but I appreciate that they give the song an open minded chance even it's because of their patreons or subscribers. But with you I can see clearly you know your shit. So I do expect honest appraisals. Especially when you can name the chords as they are playing. In saying that are you prepared to do a "redo" of that Jeff Buckley song you have second thoughts on. Maybe try listening to the album version of the song Grace and see if it compares to your original assessment.. It could be fun

Jeff Buckley is one of the most underrated artists of the last three or four decades. When you have so many other amazing performers twice his age crediting him with being an inspiration, you know there has to be something there. It's not just his voice and range - which is remarkable - it's his musicianship, his composing, his poetry and his integrity while doing all of that. Grace wasn't even that big when it came out, but his live performances kept pulling people in and I think the label was planning to basically throw whatever they had his way to keep him creating. It really felt like Grace was just the start of an incredible career and it's so sad that we lost him so young.

I think the A was only used as a passing chord in the chorus with a somewhat clever riff over it. So, it did resolve to D more than it sounds. When you heard an A in the bridge section it was actually a D with an A bass tone. Also, as others mentioned, Jeff was influenced by NFAK so the intro is a harmonium.

Little late here but for as low as you grade his performances, you sure do seem to evaluate a lot of his album! I like that because you drive me nuts - in a fun way, because I wonder to whom you'd ever give a 9+? And no, it ws not a "band" ... it was just Jeff and he picked up some players to have a band behind him - he is that good. For those of us that like alternative rock, he is the epitome of operatic grunge. And just his voice should get him a 9 every time. Grace on BBC... you questioned liking it. I think you just don't like that kind of music. That's fine! And, nearly no one that is a Jeff Buckley fan even knows his backup performers. I am good with that, his voice is used perfectly in a genre not usually having good voices (few exceptions: Cantrell or Cornell). Cobain and Vedder ... make good songs... can't always sing well. Actually Cobain has an awful voice! So maybe you are a closet Buckley fan?!!! lol... he does have chops, and in a very excellent tone (how his voice sounds).. I like Led Zeppelin, but Buckley > Plant. Simply because his voice is smoother and doesn't fracture and is more pleasing to at least my ears. I don't agree but nice review. You put your time in to try and like a musical style you don't like! Thanks man!
