It’s a voice that was unmistakable and unforgettable. i’m talking of course about musician Jeff Buckley who only released one studio album during his short lived career. Despite his lack of musical output during his time alive he, hE still managed to garner a cult following, which included some of the biggest names in rock n’ roll. His death was not your typical rock n’ roll tragedy. There were no drugs, or large amounts of alcohol involved, instead a strange set of circumstances So what happened? Stay tuned to find out.
Buckley came from a musical family with his mother being a classically trained musician while his father was the psychedelic folk singer named Tim Buckley who died at the young age of 28 due to a drug overdose. Jeff was only 8 years old at the time of his father’s death, but he wouldn’t have a close relationship with him. The younger Buckley was only met his father once several months before he his death. Buckley would tell the new york times in 1993 I never knew him,”. “I met him once, when I was 8. We went to visit him, and he was working in his room, so I didn’t even get to talk to him. And that was it.”
Buckley wouldn’t even be invited to his father’s funeral and his mother would claim in a 2002 documentary that her son tried to avoid much of the same pitfalls that ended the life of his biological father.
Known as “Scott Moorhead” for much of his childhood, Jeff borrowed the name from his step father who he was close to.. It’s likely that Moorhead had a bigger influence on Jeff’s career path than his biological father. Moorhead gave Buckley one of his first albums which was Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti. Buckley would tell an interviewer in 1994 reflecting on Led Zeppelin “That was the first voice I really fell in love with. Young Robert Plant back when he sounded like Jeans. He was trying to sound like Howlin' Wolf, but he didn't. He sounded like some big fing animal.” he’d say.
In addition to Zeppelin Buckley would also be heavily influenced by Queen, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Kiss and Pink Floyd.
As a child Buckley lived in many places as his family moved around a lot within California with the singer referring to his childhood as “rootless trailer trash’. Buckley would also claim that he never fit in anywhere as a child telling the guardian newspaper in 1994 how his mother was the one pushing for the family to move around saying “We’d spend a few months in some places, longer in others. But we never hung around for long. The best places were also the worst because just as I’d make friends with someone we’d be out of there. I got pretty good at working out who wanted to punch me and who would defend me. I’m an excellent judge of character now. I guess my mother just always wanted to know what was around the next corner.”
Throughout his years in high school, Buckley played in a series of cover bands and soon after graduation he attended the Los Angeles Musicians Institute He would reveal to Rolling Stone magazine in 1994 that while the institute did teach him a lot about music theory, specifically harmonies,, overall he felt the experience was a waste of time. Buckley would spend the next half a decade in LA playing as a session guitarist in a wide variety of bands covering a range of styles including jazz, reggae, and heavy metal, Lacking any real success and growing tired of the LA music scene, Buckley in 1990 moved across the country to New York City where he initially didn’t have a lot of success working as a musician. He would split time between LA and New York from 1990 to 1991 during which he would record a demo tape.
Buckley would make his solo debut at a tribute show to his father in 1991 at St. Ann’s Church in Brooklyn. Obituaries for his father failed to mention him having a son and those closest to him were shocked to learn he had a child. It would be his father’s former manager who knew about Jeff and invited him at the last minute to partake in the tribute. Initially Jeff was unsure whether to attend, but deciding it would help him have closure he chose to do so telling Rolling Stone “It bothered me that I hadn’t been to his funeral, that I’d never been able to tell him anything,” “I used that show to pay my last respects.” The younger Buckley would perform a cover of his father’s song “i never asked to be your mountain’ which was penned by his Dad as a send off to the family he was abandoning. If you watch Gematria effect news with Zachary K Hubbard he believes the cabal kills these artists (actors, athletes etc) by ritual/numbers. The Police (sting) have a song written about it “murder by numbers” he codes it by the dates, age, time. Very compelling. Big labels like Sony - What a memory and honor to be chosen care for his body. I can’t imagine as my oldest son is almost 27 and has similar features and talents as Jeff. His/Jeff’s music has been such a grace in my life🙏🏼♥️

I think it's a little overrated and doesn't stand up to repeated listens - that's just me. Since it took so long for him to get around to following it up I feel like his approach to songwriting was a little heavy handed and the quantity of output suffered. I know what people mean when they say it's a great album though - really great sound engineers for sure but for me it's overly sentimental and don't think he really wanted to be a songwriter but he was in a position where he had to.

@@kevtruth fully agree, he absolutely would've surpassed 'grace'. I wish he could've done some solo stuff without the record label, I get the sense they were trying to push the grunge angle and maybe if he existed now I he could've just self published to allow himself total freedom. Maybe in a parallel universe.

I'm not knocking people enjoying the album, it's just the music critic in me, I felt the album was very special when I first heard it but with repeated plays my feelings changed. Hallelujah sounds, great, definitely his swan song and everyone should hear it, but as a whole I side with some critics who note some shortcomings. It's an enjoyable album! Masterpiece... you decide.

@@jojo-lp4rd Yeah. I've been listening to it since 1999. If I want a taste of it (which is about all I need) I crank out the first 3 songs and cut it off before Lilac Wine. But me the critic would give it 4.5 out of 5. Great debut, but probably would have better ones in the future.

I met Buckley a few times in the city. I play bass and knew Matt Johnson his drummer who introduced me. I also had Harper Collins as a client and the designer of the book was a student of mine at The School of Visual Arts in NYC. I was an Adjunct Professor that taught Photoshop there for over 20 years. She knew my stories of Jeff by taking my class . We talked music often. When she was designing the book years later she called me and asked I would like to work on the images needed. I said yes immediately and it was a project that I hold special to my heart. I was fortunate enough to see Jeff a dozen times including his record release party at CBGBs

He's more aware of the business than you and I assume. He chose to be in it. Stress and pressure (from extended touring, recoupment, sales demand, possible artistic compromise, etc.) will take its toll on anyone. Considering how shitty the music industry can be (there were artists who sold million copies and still broke), he's got a pretty good deal from Sony as a new and upcoming artist. He wasn't pressured to produce the next big hits as soon as he signed -- the business people (maybe not all, but most) had faith in him, his musical talent and his artistic process. If he didn't die prematurely, he'd continue on recording the second album and the next until he's freed of the contract, maybe. The contract is designed to free artists from the label after sometime if they choose to, depending on the deal, not that I'd advise anyone to sign it without thinking long and hard.

On my way to return a large Penske truck full of custom designed architectural stainless steel panels to Buffalo, NY from Fort Worth, TX during my M.Arch a few years back - I noticed that my path would lead me straight through Memphis. I just had to go to the place where he last was, however much time was pressing. During earlier aspects of my education - this time in music composition at UNT - I worked out of a Sam Goody's record store in a mall toward Dallas from Denton. The first day I worked there one of the long time employees shoved Grace into my hand and asked - "Have you been listening to Jeff Buckley?" I admit that I had not been listening to Jeff until then. And when I heard his name I thought - Country. Yes. It's just what happened, it was my handed down auto bias misfiring and trying to make me look horribly bad. The year was 1995 and it was autumn - my second year of whipping through music history classes and free 1 o'clock lab band performances every week and piano practice and performing with the university chorus at the Meyerson and dropping into Toadies concerts off Fry Street and being free from the shelter of my parent's house - I suppose you could say.....But my time at Sam Goody's was a brief one and that introduction seemed to be very pointed - it still does. And almost two decades later I could not drive through Memphis without stopping to say goodbye to someone I never knew and never will.

About his father, (who also had an amazing talent and voice)... I can't understand _not_ feeling an incredible connection with his son. Not only the blood relationship but that indescribable genetic gift that a certain few are blessed with and which they both shared. It's not a case of a wanna be musician with an incredibly talented child where resentment from that could cause animosity. He was just a little boy when he was in his father's home and wasn't even acknowledged . It's heartbreaking. I just don't get how someone could live with themselves after abandoning their family like this.

When Elizabeth Fraser was recording “Teardrop” with Massive Attack, she just found out about what happened to Jeff supposedly. From Wikipedia: While recording the song in 1997, she found out that her once-close friend, Jeff Buckley, had disappeared and been found drowned. "That was so weird ... I'd got letters out and I was thinking about him. That song's kind of about him - that's how it feels to me anyway".

Great video. He was very popular down here in Oz. In fact, he played 2 shows in Melbourne in '96 that I missed because I couldn't get time off work. I figured I'd catch him next tour, because he'd said he had enjoyed his time here and wanted to return ASAP. One of the greatest regrets of my life, not taking a "sickie" and just going to see him at The Palais. Also, he was friends with Chris Cornell; who helped put together "Sketches". A duo with those two is one of my greatest "what ifs".

The first time I heard Grace....... it was around 2007, I was in my bed , just Downloaded Pandora and trying to discover new music. The first guitar rift I heard of the song Grace, had me paralyzed......... and then his voice........ “ there’s no asking to stay, Long enough for the clouds to fly me away” ........ My emotions welled up in, me and I started crying, by the end of the song I was bawling ! I have never heard anything sooo beautiful. I went into a deep dive to find out who was this man? What is this music? How have I never ever heard this before?!!!!? The entire album of grace will forever and always be one of my very favorites! To me,... he is one of the great legends and musical geniuses that GOD sent to us, and then took away before we ruined him! His voice, his music and his presence was an absolute blessing to the world! .... May he rest in peace, and I know he is jamming in heaven with the likes of Beethoven, Prince, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Chopin,etc....

Those studio demos are pretty amazing - I’m so grateful they were made, I love all ten of those songs from the first CD. Haven’t You Heard also sounds like studio quality, not sure why that didn’t make the cut for the first disc. Pretty sure Andy Wallace mixed them. I was dating this Irish exchange student at the time who turned me onto him just before he died. I’ll never forget seeing “sketched for my sweetheart” on the new release rack in Tower Records and my gf freaking out, there were rumors that there were studio demos of the 2nd album, but it was a surprise to me.

I managed a pizza restaurant in Memphis where he would eat when he was in town. He was super friendly and had rented a house about a half mile away. The day before he died I was riding my bike home from work and saw him walking down the street. I pulled over to say hey and chat, and he was clearly out of his mind. His eyes were rolling and he sort of yelled something at me and kept walking. I can still see him, he was so NOT acting like he normally did, which was just super sweet and normal. I assumed he was on acid so I just rode off. Next day he was gone.

It reminds me of the pain I might leave, Leave behind . . . And I feel them drown my name, So easy to know and forget with this kiss, I'm not afraid to go, but it goes so slow . . ." 💧YOU & I: "Ah, the calm below that poisoned river wild, You and I . . ." 💧NIGHTMARES BY THE SEA: ". . . I've loved so many times, and I've drowned them all, From their coral graves, they rise up when darkness falls . . . Stay with me under these waves tonight, Be free for once in your life tonight . . ." 💧SATISFIED MIND: "When my life is over and my time has run out, My friends and my loved ones I will leave, there's no doubt, But, one thing's for certain, when it comes my time, I'll leave this old world with a satisfied mind."
