I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.
Mazzy Star was responsible for the early 90’s sleeper hit Fade Into You. Featuring David Roback, who wrote most of the band’s music, he was a talented multi-instrumentalist. He was joined by singer Hope Sandoval who wrote most of the band’s lyrics, the breathy vocalist with a haunting yet hopeful voice.
Their hit track was released on the band’s 1993 sophomore album “So Tonight That I Might See.” There was something pure about the band’s sound and their recording process. In a 2020 interview with Refinery 29, Sandoval said:
"I like to hang out in restaurants and cafés, eavesdrop on people's conversations and collect new stories. Then I go home and spend the evenings embellishing them."
Part of the band’s magic came from the soulmate-like connection between Roback and Sandoval. In a 2018 interview with Double J, Sandoval said that and i quote:
"Half the time we don’t even really need to speak to each other, we use telepathy." The pair was rumored to briefly be a couple around the time of recording their debut album, “She Hangs Brightly.”
The song Fade Into You became an anthem for lovelorn teenagers in the 90’s & Hollywood loved it too. The song was licensed to more than 30 movies and television shows & had artists like Ben Harper, Kelly Clarkson and Dinosaur Jr have all covered the song.
But before Roback became a musician he found himself in New York in the late 70’s wanting to become a painter telling the LA Times in 1990 “I went to New York mainly to be part of the art scene,”“But I gradually found myself getting more inspired by what was happening in music than in art. . . . People like Patti Smith and Television. I felt like a punk. That's the attitude I Iidentifid with, but when I picked up the guitar and started playing it, the music didn’t come out sounding punk. It was something else. . . ..” After brief stint in new york he would head back to Los Angeles.
Roback and Sandoval both started off in other bands before coming together to start Mazzy Star.
Roback went to UC Berkeley and started his band with his brother Steven called Unconscious with Susanna Hoffs, who would later be known for co-founding The Bangles. The two brothers started their next band, Rain Parade, in 1982, and they gained popularity in the L.A. indie scene.
The soft spoken Sandoval came from East LA where her parents worked in factory and she was the youngest of ten children. She would form the group Going Home while she was still in high school with frien d Sylvia Gomez in the early 80’s. Both women were big fans of Rain Parade, & they decided to make a bold move to get on their radar.
After a 1983 Rain Parade concert, Gomez snuck backstage to give David Roback a demo tape. At the time, Roback was under contract with Rough Trade records and Going Home was still unsigned, but doing gigs around LA. Upon hearing the demo, Roback offered to produce Going Home’s first album and play guitar on the record, but even to this day it has yet to be released.. It was also around this time that Rob

What happened to Mazzy Star is what happened to the music business. Executives demanded control of the music. I'm glad Mazzy Star resisted even though it cost them the spotlight. If all musicians had Mazzy Star's view, executives would lose control of the music, and popular music would be incredible again.

Back in '94, my first serious girlfriend and I went out "camping" in my folks new, full-size van that the rear most benchseat would turn into a bed. So I put this song on (actually, I played the entire album) while we made out in the dark, in the middle of nowhere, for hours... Just two kids. That was so long ago but, anytime I hear this song, I'm immediately back in that van, with her, that night.

Mazzy Star seemed to be a band of quiet introverts making ethereal, thoughtful, delicate music which made industry executives think they were pushovers they could boss around. However, as an introvert who's often been overlooked, misinterpreted, misunderstood and underestimated myself I can tell you that underneath the seemingly soft exterior often lies an independent streak fiercer and more powerful than any loudmouth would ever guess. Mazzy Star was going to make music their way or not at all and were willing and able to walk away when that was threatened to be compromised.

With Mazzy Star, melancholy never felt so warm and comforting. It’s like they expand the empty gaping hole in my heart, fill it with some warmth, then empty it again. I used to sit alone in my collage dorm room and play “into dust” for hours to myself on the guitar. I was a sports jock on the outside, but a sad emo within.

She is still one of the music industry's hidden secrets to most of the masses. My god, have you ever heard the track she did with Massive Attack, "The Spoils"? She has the most amazing, ethereal voice, and I suspect she is still in demand as a studio vocalist. Other artists and bands just love her similarly to how they loved Sinead. It seems strange that no label released a killer solo album that would've made her a household name, but maybe she likes it better being the magical ingredient in great records rather than a huge solo star on her own.(Smart woman!)

My husband did that the year before he met me, in 2005, when he discovered them. Ironicly it was introdued by another female, whose name is the same as mine, but he would lay there listening to Hope's voice thinking about his future wife/future love that he was looking for. (The not quite relationship w/that female was short lived as she was someone else's wife, yikes!) He was ready to settle down or at least start a family when we met. We sadly lost our first pregnancy, but had 2 wonderful children since before losing our last one & it only took 13 years before we were married. lol Still together today, and both re-discovering Mazzy Star, yet again for me, third time. I tend to ycle back & rediscover musi I didn't about from a band/singer I one loved. Lots out there for this particualar band & their other contibutions out there. I played a song by them one day & he was so excited asking, "who is this" repeatedly, took 15 years or so for me to play a song by them in his presence. lol

I only know Fade into you but will listen to more things from Mazzy. The singer Hope has a haunting voice and her appeareance singing that song live and mood was so outstanding the first time I saw it I can't really explain that feeling I got. It still amazes me, cause she performed it like she got dumped in a seriously serious relationship that some would think would last forever but ended with them not speaking and being like strangers which something I can relate to a little bit and it's a very strange thing that leaves you puzzled. Even people in the industry had no idea. I even remember seeing some interview with some rock star, I think it was one of the guys from the Red Hot Chili Peppers or of those bands like that, and he was saying that he really, really wanted to date Mazzy Starr, lol. Does that include David Roback too too? I once told a girl in the 90s - she was a self-described big fan of Mazzy Starr - that it was a band name. The girl got mad at me. It's worse than that though. I have heard people refer to Led Zeppelin as "he" thinking Robert Plant's name is Led. That's the kind of thing Pink Floyd was singing about with "Have a Cigar" with the line "The band is just fantastic that is really what I think, oh by the way, which one's Pink?" Anyway, whatever.

An ex introduced me to Mazzy Star whom I'd heard of but never listened to until late 90s. The music was that dreamy creamy lushness and fullness while spare on production. When it's clean you hear every nuance and detail. Then Ms Sandoval's vocal gets your attention quickly. Her delivery is honest, unadorned with all that vibrato and just remarkably clear. Every singer has their distinct sound and style of course, but in my opinion Hope Sandoval's voice is so good I could listen to her sing all night. With a smile on me face.

When I finally saw them live, i wasn’t allowed to take pics or video, and thank God because I was able to be present and in the moment of just enjoying them live. Unfortunately it was after Keith died. But Hope and Dave put on an amazing show. Among My Swan is my favorite album of all time.

Into Dust is the most beautiful melancholy song. 🖤 She did not like facing the crowd while singing.

I saw her walk off stage after just 15 mins at one gig . She is really nervous on stage . even worse than Lana Del Rey and Hannah Reid (London grammar)

I heard these guys looking at the ceiling of a venue say "Well, she said she's not coming out unless those light are turned off." "THOSE lights?!! Nobody knows how to turn them off" "Yes, she says they are too bright and she's not coming out." They were like 4 strands of Christmas lights. But somebody figured out how to țurn them off and she came out and did a beautiful show.

@@CS-ys4sy Many singers esp female suffer with really bad stage fright eg Lana Del Rey, Hannah Reid, Florence Welch, Beth Gibbons . But I think Hope takes the Gold medal . I have been to around 1400 gigs since 1973 , and that is the only time I have seen a lead singer storm off stage after just 20 mins saying "you are so demanding " we weren't . There was silence because the guys were in awe of her delicate Elfin like Beauty , and the girls simply wanted to be (Sigh "still we remember we who ..............................................................".)

I was only introduced to them in 2015.....have all four of their albums and at least two stay in my cd changer at any one time. Absolutely love her voice and the darkness.

I wouldnt have made it through high school without Mazzy and their 2nd album. I still sing like mad when I play it.
