What happened to Mazzy Star is what happened to the music business. Executives demanded control of the music. I'm glad Mazzy Star resisted even though it cost them the spotlight. If all musicians had Mazzy Star's view, executives would lose control of the music, and popular music would be incredible again.

Mazzy Star seemed to be a band of quiet introverts making ethereal, thoughtful, delicate music which made industry executives think they were pushovers they could boss around. However, as an introvert who's often been overlooked, misinterpreted, misunderstood and underestimated myself I can tell you that underneath the seemingly soft exterior often lies an independent streak fiercer and more powerful than any loudmouth would ever guess. Mazzy Star was going to make music their way or not at all and were willing and able to walk away when that was threatened to be compromised.

She is still one of the music industry's hidden secrets to most of the masses. My god, have you ever heard the track she did with Massive Attack, "The Spoils"? Thank you for this very interesting video...I discovered Mazzy Star quite by chance when I was a teenager with the album "Among My Swan" at the virgin megastore in Paris. It was offered for listening with headphones...I immediately loved it, I bought it then I bought all the others...a real revelation. Today, I am 48 years old and I still listen to their songs regularly.

My husband did that the year before he met me, in 2005, when he discovered them. Ironicly it was introdued by another female, whose name is the same as mine, but he would lay there listening to Hope's voice thinking about his future wife/future love that he was looking for. (The not quite relationship w/that female was short lived as she was someone else's wife, yikes!) He was ready to settle down or at least start a family when we met. We sadly lost our first pregnancy, but had 2 wonderful children since before losing our last one & it only took 13 years before we were married. lol Still together today, and both re-discovering Mazzy Star, yet again for me, third time. I tend to ycle back & rediscover musi I didn't about from a band/singer I one loved. Lots out there for this particualar band & their other contibutions out there. I played a song by them one day & he was so excited asking, "who is this" repeatedly, took 15 years or so for me to play a song by them in his presence. lol

I only know Fade into you but will listen to more things from Mazzy. The singer Hope has a haunting voice and her appeareance singing that song live and mood was so outstanding the first time I saw it I can't really explain that feeling I got. It still amazes me, cause she performed it like she got dumped in a seriously serious relationship that some would think would last forever but ended with them not speaking and being like strangers which something I can relate to a little bit and it's a very strange thing that leaves you puzzled. Looking emotionless but with a chilling emotion.

Even people in the industry had no idea. I even remember seeing some interview with some rock star, I think it was one of the guys from the Red Hot Chili Peppers or of those bands like that, and he was saying that he really, really wanted to date Mazzy Starr, lol. Does that include David Roback too too? I once told a girl in the 90s - she was a self-described big fan of Mazzy Starr - that it was a band name. The girl got mad at me. It's worse than that though. I have heard people refer to Led Zeppelin as "he" thinking Robert Plant's name is Led. That's the kind of thing Pink Floyd was singing about with "Have a Cigar" with the line "The band is just fantastic that is really what I think, oh by the way, which one's Pink?" Anyway, whatever.

A major band from the 90s, exceptional. one of a kind. Master of many musical inspirations, and yet few come to cite them, and they were not recognized for all of their work. They released classics upon classics. I discovered them late, in 2015 (thanks to Kurt Cobain's list) and it was a huge regret not to have grown up with them. But since that date they never left me. I invite you to discover Hope's discography which is also very good if you don't know it, her solo albums are of high quality. I guess they are getting more popular right now with TV series. They are gems and are so, so discreet in this world where being seen is. If everyone could be like them: just make timeless, hazy music and go back to the shadows. I am saddened by the death of David, he was an exceptional composer-musician, a genius from another time. I don't think the group will release any more albums under the name of Mazzy Star, David is irreplaceable by his presence but also by his sound. And I think it's better that way. Hope will continue to release solo albums no doubt, take her time.
@yakg7976 Жыл бұрын
David was actually working on releasing some earlier recordings and I beleive new ones w/Opal his band before, the one that became mazzy Star one Hope joined him. But yes, it is better that way unless they were previously recorded and they (whoever, mostly Hope I suppose) put out a release w/those recordings similar to whatthe Beatles did in the late 90s w/a few new songs that John had contributed to before his death.

An ex introduced me to Mazzy Star whom I'd heard of but never listened to until late 90s. The music was that dreamy creamy lushness and fullness while spare on production. When it's clean you hear every nuance and detail. Then Ms Sandoval's vocal gets your attention quickly. Her delivery is honest, unadorned with all that vibrato and just remarkably clear. Every singer has their distinct sound and style of course, but in my opinion Hope Sandoval's voice is so good I could listen to her sing all night. With a smile on me face.
