Having watched Gordon from start to finish and having hated him with a passion in the 90s to ultimately respecting him, I can say without a doubt he was the greatest driver of my lifetime and quite possibly of all time. There will never be another Jeff Gordon. The guy was a natural with a race car.

Man, this was a lot of fun to watch. This is going to be a bit of a read, but I'd love to share my story. I grew up a Gordon fan, born in 92. I idolized him from the time I was very little, had the cars, shirts, you name it. I was born with a brittle bone condition, the same as my mother and her father before her. Both me and my mom are little people in wheelchairs, just over 3 feet tall. In 2000, I think; my family took me on vacation, and we stopped by the HMS shop in Charlotte. Now, Jeff wasn't there that day, but the receptionist saw us and asked my mom if she'd ever heard of Make-A-Wish. Mom thought it was only for terminally ill children, so she never thought to look into it. The lady gave her a card and urged her to get in contact, she wanted me to have the chance to meet Jeff. Long story short, we did. And on my first attempt to meet Jeff was supposed to be Atlanta in the spring of 2002. I didn't make it. I had an accident on the way there and nearly died. I tipped my wheelchair over and ended up with a basilar skull fracture (very similar to the one which killed Dale, actually. Just not as bad), and ended up catching meningitis. Again to shorten this by a ton, I healed up, but while I was in the hospital, his agent got in touch with us, saying they told Jeff what had happened, and he was happy to know I was doing better. Sent me a signed rookie card, which I still have to this day. I ended up getting sick and nearly dying one more time, right before finally being good to go. They flew us up to the June Pocono race. Even had a limo to come out to our house to drive us to the airport! This was all before my 10th birthday, and it was magical. We were given movie vouchers, a train museum ticket, and got to go to a coal mine museum where you went down in the mines! But the best part was meeting Jeff. They put us up in the Team Chevy VIP tent (Jeff's was unfortunately fully booked, got to eat breakfast with Jeff Green who spoke that morning though!), and we met him on the Saturday before the race. It was a small group of us Make-A-Wish kids. We waited outside his motor coach for him to come meet us. While we were waiting there, Ricky Rudd walked up (His RV was next to Jeff's) and says: "What's with all this Jeff Gordon stuff?!" And talked with us a bit, gave us an autograph. He was really cool to all of us, even if we didn't have his gear on. Picking a little fun at it while still being just an amazing guy. When Jeff finally arrived... It was amazing. Jeff took time with each of us and our families, one-on-one. No one felt snubbed or left out. He made each of us feel special, and it never felt fake, put on, or rushed. When he finally got to me, and we told him about the ordeal on our first attempt, he's like: "So ya made it! I'm glad I finally got to meet you!". He'd remembered me and the accident, and it was so cool to be recognized by my hero. We sat and talked about racing, he asked what I liked to do and some other things about me. I told him I'd wanted to race him on Nascar Thunder someday, which he got a big kick out of. Autographs and photos were had... and even if the whole meeting only took 15 to 20 minutes? It felt like the world stood still for me. I was still a bit weak from my whole ordeal and was getting my strength back. But I felt on top of the world that day. As a side-note, we also got to meet Jimmie Johnson that day too behind his merch trailer! On his rookie year, not knowing he'd be a future 7-time champ. Even got a wave from Jr on a cart running to the garage. He wanted to stop, but was in a hurry. But he made sure to smile and wave at us. That entire trip was worth the struggle I went through... And I cut a LOT of details here, like the meaning and story behind a cross in my pocket I gave to Jeff that I'd held on to from my time in the hospital with meningitis. Meeting my hero was a cherished memory I'll never forget. #24Ever!

At the same time he was doing that, I was doing the same thing in my career in the oil business. Youngest executive and worked my way up to the top tech job by my mid-30s. When he said "How did I go from being the young newcomer to the old guy?" I totally could relate. Life indeed does FLY BY! What a great interview with the Legendary Jeff Gordon. Well done everyone!

Back in 96, the guy I was sort of seeing, was a huge NASCAR fan. His entire family was. We'd watch it every Sunday, while grilling. So they dragged me off to Talladega (April) race. While the relationship ended, the love of NASCAR was born. And from the start, I was a Gordon fan. Plus, the April Talladega race fell on, or within days of my birthday. I had standing grandstand seats for 4 years. Every single time, I would manage to be sitting next to a guy who hated Gordon, and would tease me the entire race. This one guy had headphones so he could hear the drivers talking to their pits. He'd hand me his headphones and say "here, you wanna listen to your boyfriend whine"?😆 It was always in good fun, and always such a great time! I can't stress to people how big NASCAR was during the late 90s, and early 2000s. And it is hugely because of one guy...... Jeff Gordon. He singlehandedly had both men AND women sitting in a speedway on any given Sunday to enjoy some high speed chaos. It's so hard to explain to people that what they see on tv, can't even compete with the real thing. Especially, a Talladega race. Trying to describe a group of 43 cars coming at 200mph, I can only liken to a herd of a million buffalo. You will not ever see them coming. But you'll hear them. And when they get anywhere close to your seats, you'll only get a flash of color. You'll never actually see the cars going by unless you're sitting way up high (or unless the pace car is out and they're going 80mph). And back then, there were no cell phones much less camera phones. You took your camera and 14 rolls of film. You stood at the fence, turned towards the corner the cars were about to come out of, and you start clicking. Hoping like hell you actually got a car, and not a blur.😅 The greatest part of it all once back home, was getting the film to the grocery store pick up, where you had to wait another day to get it back. You grab your friends, and you start opening packs of pictures, one by one. So you can all "ohhhhh and ahhhh" "oh shit, you got Gordon's whole car in that shot!!""😂 and scream for joy, before you take all of the film back to the store, and send it back in for 20 copies of negatives # 1, 8, 12, 16, 22, etc. 🤣 God, I miss the good ole days. Will always love Jeff Gordon!

Imagine if Jeff had left Hendrick to go with Ray to dodge. The entire sport would be different. Jimmie probably doesn't end up at Hendrick. Dodge may still be in the sport. Wild to go down that rabbit hole.

The greatest driver of all time. He brought Nascar into the 21st century. Earnhardt had limos Gordon had private jets. Gordon also a owner at Hendrick and has won as Co owner of JJs 48 car. Gordon had a huge part in bringing JJ to Hendrick. If it wasn't for JJ and the new pts system Gordon would have prob 10 championships and 100+ wins. Great driver, and perosn.

Him saying a 13 year old doesn’t belong in a sprint car is something that needs to be echoed throughout the community cause it’s happening way too often all over the country.

He is the goat of nascar idc what anyone else thinks. It's a fact not a opinion. I grew up a JG fan until he an Mr. Hendrick bought a #48 car driven by a motorcyclist by the name of Jimmie Johnson while I a boarded the Johnson train my dad stuck by JG side an I still supported JG but my driver was johnson both incredible careers

The aftermath of him passing Earnhardt for wins was uttlerly ridiculous!! I remember thinking, "Give me a damned break!!" (And I usually rooted for Earnhardt over Gordon) Only a certain type of folks can get away with showing "passion" by violently acting the damned fool. I respect Gordon for saying it was a "great thing." It is quite a magnanimous response.

Btw Jeff is telling the truth about Dale Riding around layed back with his right arm grabbing the passenger side roll cage. . Now a little context. Dale broke his neck between 1996-1998, he had to start propping his right arm up on the roll cage to take the pressure off of the nerve, that was being jabbed by a bone fragment. This was the reason he had surgery at the end of 99’.

I was a Gordon fan when I was really young (6-7), because my mom was a Gordon fan, and HATED Earnhardt because of the rivalry. Then, when Dale Sr won the 98 500, I realized just how great he truly was and began to kind of hate Jeff. Then Tony Stewart came on the scene in 99, winning three races in his rookie season, plus his greatness on dirt and his Indy Car championship, I became a Tony fan. Then, Dale got killed, and I blubbered like a baby. Jeff winning his fourth championship that same year pretty much sealed me hating Jeff. It's been over 20 years since I considered myself a Gordon fan, but now, looking back, he's definitely one of the best to ever do it, and I really wish that he would have gotten 7 instead of Jimmie...and he would have if they would have kept racing with the same points format that Jeff won his 4 and Dale won his 7.
