I need more of this. It's the best palm blocking instruction I've found yet

I've been playing with a flexible right hand forever. Peaked knuckle and flatter hand, palm and pick blocking without thinking about it. Same with vibrato, rolling and shaking ,what ever suits the song

If I tried to pick like this I would really suck 😅

The flat hand works fairly well for Jay Dee Maness.

My favorite go to for stage blanking moments. "Newman hand Newman hand Newman hand..."

If you find tablature helpful, you can find the exercises written out for this course on The Steel Guitar Forum.

I assume that's Jeff doing the picking but his hand is not in the position he's trying to sell. Each player finds what works for him best, we don't all have the same hand size and flexibility.

Now I'm sure both work but I have to play Joe Wright style

Did Jeff always have the cool striping on his steels? The Franklin he used in some of his courses had some on it as well.

He did that himself with automotive tape. Jeff was a great guy as well as a great teacher.

John do you know what type of thumb picks these are Jeff is using here? I’ve always wondered that. The very first lesson I took with Tony Rankin in Miamisburg Ohio (lifelong friend) , he taught me the crease line thing. Very valuable. I’ve never seen this video so thanks for sharing this segment John.

Jeff made those thumbpicks, I have a couple in my seat. He used an air corn popper to bend them.

Try the Dunlop 9051R. I think they make sizes. Mines a medium.

As has been stated by others, everyone is different. Jay Dee Maness does not have his RH like this (his is more like what Jeff was saying "not" to do). Others may use different techniques as well. Newman was a hoss on steel but our hands are all a little different. It's a good guide but not gospel. If it doesn't work for you, experiment. Cheers!
