That jockey is now a legend. Held back while the rest set the fastest pace ever. When the pack went wide around the last turn he let Rich Strike do his thing down the backstretch. It was AMAZING!!!

Sonny has a clock in his head (Bill Shoemaker) And, he threaded Strike between horses on the inside rail--as good as Calvin. Hit Strike once, meaning "Now." And that horse accelerated like Secretariat!

I’ve watched the race many times and I must say that was one of the best rides I’ve ever seen. But what a lot of people won’t understand is when Sonny had to pull the right line as hard as he did to get some racing room in the final 100 yards, and Rich’s head/neck had to turn nearly 45 degrees to get there. And by doing so Rich had to check himself (slow down), and then he accelerated Again to win the derby😮 To me that was Amazing. For a $30,000 A.E , with a small name trainer and rider to simply make it to the derby is a large feat. But to win is 1 in 100 million. Rich Strike is the Seabiscuit of the 21 century!

Eric Reed, trainer, said in an interview the morning after the race that he approached Sonny Leon about being Rich Strike's permanent rider right after he got the horse. He told Sonny, "He won't win anything for a while but stick with me and everyone will know your name." After Reed got Rich Strike, Sonny was the only jockey he ever had. Interesting.

Rich Strike and Sonny Leon were racing equivalent of a wide receiver. Many horses will back off the pace when caught in middle of a crowd but Sonny shucked and jived that bold stallion left and right till there was the opening and then let him rip. Horse did some incredible body slamming and footwork. Intimidated the other horses out of his way to create the opening he needed. Racing history was made.

Jock steered RS like he had rack and pinion steering. Loved the aerial view!!! I don't ever remember seeing anything like that in my life!!! He went like a broken field runner. I get a rush each time I watch the rerun!!!

if you watch the reruns, the acceleration that Rich Strike put on when Sunny had him shoot the gap at the top of the stretch, that is what a quick turn of foot means. And then later, when he had to work around that horse in the deep stretch, that was masterful rein work by Sunny. Great ride on a hot horse.

I'll bet when Sonny Leon was headed for the starting gate he could feel the pent up energy. From the tapes of the race with about 30-yds from the finis line it seems like Sonny Leon says to Rich Strike "you would happen to have a fifth gear" and Rick Strike does.. and you can see him dig in and accelerate. Obviously this horse enjoys to really air it out.

This was the most exciting derby I have ever seen in my 65 years of life. The story is worthy of a movie bc Disney could not have written a better script. Sonny Leon rode that horse to perfection. The call by Travis Stone was epic. The horse is seemingly peeking right now (Will know at the Preakness and Belmont). In this race, Rich Strike was the strongest horse by a pretty good margin.... he was unstoppable! Can't wait until The Preakness.
