Jeff was a friend to all of us young skaters in Dallas. Treated us all like Bro's. If your deck was wasted, he would give you one of his old ones. Turned me on to Anime before it was popular. We would go to his house and watch Vampire Hunter D and Gundam vids. A true Bro. He is truly missed. R.I.P!!

I was so blessed to be in the right place at the right time in skateboarding history. From 1987-1989 I rode for Tracker trucks and a small board company called Dread. I am so humbled that I was able to witness and at times skate with many of the legendary Texas pros. Anybody who was lucky enough to see Jeff skate back then will agree: when you look up the word "style" in the dictionary, there should just be a picture of Jeff Phillips.

Yep, why Jeff was always in the top 3 for a long while, when all the ramp skaters were still building up the nerve to attempt a 540. Took a lot of skill and balls to pull it off, especially on those old heavy planks they skated on?

Imagine rolling out frontside onto the deck then launching a frontside boneless over the channel into vert? I've only seen one other skater do something similar. Which was Texas Dan on a 8 foot square bowl at the boulder co skatepark about 20 years ago "no channel though". He obviously is a disciple of Jeff's!

I love the footage of Virginia Beach Mt. Trashmore ‘86 Eastern Assault contest. Phillips won that contest and beat both Hawk & Hosoi. That was significant because most contests back then were won by either Hawk or Hosoi and by then Hawk was doing both 540’s & 720’s.

It's so cool to be able to see this stuff. I started skating in 2000, so this kind of footage was inaccessible; they wrote about him in the magazines, printed the occasional photo, but this really shows how gnarly he was. There was a lot of mystique about him, the dude who beat Tony Hawk on acid (actually mushrooms, according to what I've read since then, but same difference pretty much).

"Greatest who ever lived"? I don't know if I would say that (I'm a Hosoi man, myself.) That being said, I fully support YOU saying it; because Jeff Phillips' name definitely does not come up enough in conversations on the greatest. (Frontside elguerial?! Who does that?!) My first deck was that Sims speckled, devil graphic Phillips in purple with dark blue and green. I got it at the end of '86 or early '87, which was the same time I got my first mag: the Transworld where Phillips won Holiday Havoc. (Hosoi won highest air, by the way.) So, thank you for this! I had forgotten. Thank you, and thanks to Jeff.
