Sono bastati due take (il primo di prova) all'immenso Jeff Porcaro per creare la leggendaria traccia di batteria di "I keep forgetting". Scoprite quello che è successo mentre Jeff stava registrando il take che è poi finito sul disco!

You have to love Jeff's humility. To admit those 16th's were busting his chops. There's a concert of Michael McDonald doing this song with another drummer, and he's working it pretty hard. Tough tune. I have to play 2 handed.

One thing I like to practice is to set a tempo for the ballpark of I Keep Forgettin' or Georgie Porgie and start playing it the one-handed way - but then switch to other ways of playing the groove while striving to maintain the same pulse. This might be two-handed on the highhats, or 8ths on the hats with ghost notes on the snare, or other variations. It helps develop comfort with different ways of doing things - and it gives me options if I want to play something Porcaro's way but I happen to be sucking at it...

I remember a Neal Peart video, saying how difficult Tom Sawyer was to play because of the endless 16th note measures, and I felt a little vindication, because I thought it was just me. Now I feel even better. Even though I still can't play Rosanna well after 40 years.

As a non drummer I would never have imagined this track being such a workout - especially for Jeff - it's such a laid back tune.

Ummm, yeah as a non-drummer I could see why you might think that. Try tapping that out pretending you have a stick in your hand. You'll figure it out pretty quickly. But that's not even the beginning of how hard the drumming is. He's breaking from 16th note closed hi-hat to 8th note open hi-hat throughout the song and the control needed to do that is INSANE. It's even harder when you have a kick beat that's as cool as the one he's keeping, which is also being modified in places of the song. It's probably one of the hardest drum parts in a pop song. But Jeff Porcaro did a lot of tough pieces, and it's not the fills that are really tough like many drummers, it's the riff he's keeping. (fills = transitions, riffs = pattern being kept through the body of the verse). For many drummers, the riffs are pretty simple, and the fills is where they show off. And if you're wondering why it would be tough, Jeff started session work when he was about 20, so he was pretty young doing a lot of this work and still hadn't built up the stamina to where you simply tap this out and go on playing an entire concert after it.

@@johndoh5182 Great answer. Would have been even better if you could have avoided being so condescending. But hey, if it makes you feel better, I can live with it.

Keeping it soft and laid back sounds even tougher. Like trying to stay super chill while sprinting for 4 minutes.

I think playing that groove and getting that laid back feel is the big trick with this song. It's challenging to get the hats consistent for the whole song - and it's very challenging to get that smooth/slippery feel. I've been playing a long time and I still work on this

I know where he's talking about, and the funny thing is it sounds REALLY good and I thought it was an intentional change up to give some flair, because he does that throughout the song.

Wow! I am really surprised that I can play it with no problems using one hand for the high-hat after hearing Jeff talk about it. I'm a hardcore and Speed Metal drummer since the 80s, go figure.
