Russell is an amazing player in terms of getting to the end. He isn't a good player when it comes down to winning. He plays to make it to the end, he does not play to win. His social game needs extensive amounts of work. He's a great strategist, however his social game lacks. He thinks that if he beats them and makes extensive great moves he'll get jury votes, which is how it should be, but human beings are generally bitter when bad things happen to them. He never kept that in mind.

Rob and Russell are not alike. Rob never talked trash or made fun of other players to their faces like Russell did. He would joke about other players but it was always to the camera only. While Russell destroyed fellow castaways items (like when he burned socks) and openly made people hate him, Rob built friendships and alliances with a good social game. Rob knew how to play every aspect of the game while Russell didn't.

Why do people hate Russel? What Russel did his first season was heroic! He was on a tribe that sucked at challenges and was down 4 to 8 at the merge. Against all odds, he kept his team around with the most masterful play in the history of the game. The great injustice is that at the end of it all the jury was so butthurt over being outplayed that they voted against him. If anyone has a right to be ticked it's Russel.

I would say that Sandra is NOT the best player ever just because she has one two times. There are a couple winners who dominated their seasons and who only played once. Todd, Brian, Chris, Kim, and Earl all won easily on their seasons. Their winning percentage is the same as Sandra's. 100%

It really depends on how you look at "best player". In terms of stats, Sandra is the best player considering that she won twice, then Parvati is 2nd best because she lasted the most days of Survivor, won once, and made day twice BUT the way I define best player is "who has the best understanding of the game and executes it well" and that title, in my opinion, goes to Yul Kwon or (people may think he's overrated but...) Boston Rob. Both have very good understanding of the game, but the difference between the two is that Yul is very humble and honest to his core alliance while Rob is arrogant and cocky. Rob knows how the extent to which the phrase "just a game" can be used and Yul knows how to work a Jury. If you heard any of Yul's Survivor interviews/podcasts from Rob Cesternino, he broke down his strategy and it was brilliant! But that is also Yul's downfall. Rob plays the game of Survivor 24/7, even when he's watching it at home and doesn't admit his strategy to anyone but Yul is just very honest.

It is always difficult to compare players, were Todd and KIm that good, for example, or were the players who played with them just really bad? Was Danni a mastermind or was she just incredibly lucky? I do think there are some players who you can genuinely say played extremely well but didn't win, at least the first time they played anyway. Malcolm and Cesternino come to mind, and I think Amanda played very well on F VF as well.

Russell was great to watch and it was refreshing to see someone play the game hard, I agree the jury was bitter, and I wonder if sometimes they should do live voting at the reunion show instead of at FTC. The results might be different as people don't seem to vote based on how well people played the game, its either popularity contest, sympathy vote, or a personal grudge against someone winning. With technology in TV now, it would be worth a try to let the public vote the winner.

The problem with live voting is really simple - EDITORS decide who wins. Imagine if they edited out 80% of Russell's moves, like they did to Natalie? Would you still feel this way? You can't let public vote on show like this, cause then the whole game changes. It's not about alliances anymore, it's about doing the most insane stuff, so the public likes you. Nope the format is fine, people who played there - vote. The problem is Russell doesn't play to win, he plays to get to the end. Making people not hate you is ESSENTIAL for the game, as in real life. There are great players who won, voted people out and betrayed people - yet got thanked by the same people.

@@cl1cka Agreed but there should be one change to Survivor-- Ponderosa. Every last player on the jury gets to go to Ponderosa and mingle with all of the other jurors. This creates a problem where they have an opportunity to persuade eachother to vote a specific person. Evidence of this most likely happening is in Samoa. Eric hated everyone on his tribe, and he was cheering for Russell when he was alone on the jury. Yet, for some reason, when final tribal happened, Eric suddenly shit down Russell's throat and acted like Russell left the game mid-season, killed his puppy, and flew back to make it to final tribal. None of that makes sense??? He had no sense of what game Russell was playing, he has literally never interacted with him, yet he somehow got this notion that Russell was an extremely bad guy. Jurors should only have their vote based from the knowledge they gain up to the point they got voted out and all subsequent tribal councils. No conversation between each other during tribal council and no talking about the game while on their stroll from Ponderosa to council. Ultimately, they should not be able to mingle with other players that got voted out (and that includes players who got voted out before the Jury started).

However, in an interview Probst while Fairplay was a villain in Pearl Islands, he was a quitter in Mirconesia and quitters were not ask back. Monopoly takes place over the course of a day, and at the end of it I get pretty pissed off at the people I'm playing with. Multiply it by 39 days and add on top of that starvation and stress, and you'll begin to understand why the ability to get people to like you (and thus respect your strategic moves) is a very real advantage. Hantz might be a fantastic strategist (though he's made more than a few terrible errors), but his inability to make people like him completely cripples his game.

It's a game for sure, but the bonds you make with people are so much more meaningful when you're living on an island stranded while starving and deprived of comfort. You only have other people, and when a friend betrays you here, it hurts a lot more. That's the point of Survivor. Living on a marooned island can screw your mind and emotions. Russell just doesn't get that if he had even a bit of humility, gratitude, and regret for all those betrayals, he could have won.

Russel is an interesting character because he knows how to play the Audience. His gameplay has shown to get him to the very end but his social game makes everyone hate him, alliance or not. In these types of shows you always need to think about appealing to the audience, something that russel is superb at. It’s the reason he was the main focus of his first season, people like him and want to see more of him. He lost the game but he won it too.

Russell's problem is that he could never win because the final jury would never vote for him. The only possible way he could win is if he were up there with two people who are either more hated than him (unlikely) or genuinely didn't do jack shit over the entire game and just coasted until the end without making any contribution to the game. That's really tough to manage when you've got an ego like Russell's, which forces him to make sure everyone knows he's in control and he's calling the shots, rather than pinning it on other people to ensure that he's well-liked enough by the final jury to get them to vote him as the winner. Russell doesn't forget about the social element of the game, but he does forget that it's not just about control and manipulation. It's also about getting people on your side at the end. And that is why he failed both times he made it to the end, and will never win Survivor.

Did u see him dominate the game fully? He lost by 1 jury vote, it takes 1 bitter person to make that decision. He smashed redemption island and I think this game has never seen a more perfect game. He was so smart it's not funny. U know they like Rob so much they asked him to host. Russell doesn't play to win and he's even said it. If he thinks burning people's socks is gonna make him win then he obviously doesn't know what survivor is

Ron only won RI because he was playing with a bunch of star struck idiots. As for All Stars, I do believe he played a great game, but the one poor decision he made was taking his girlfriend to the end simply because he was hot for her. He should have stuck with Jenna to the finals and he would have won. But hey, at least he got a wife out of the deal.

“4 years ago” yeah I know this is very late, but I would like to say yul is the best player. I honestly have no idea why he hasn’t come back. He played a masterful game strategically, outplayed some superstars today such as Parvati, Candice, penner, and ozzy. He also found the only idol on that season. He is and always will be a great player

Lmao Boston Rob doesn't deserve the best at losing title. His gameplay in all-stars and especially Redemption Island was amazing. He played a near perfect game in Redemption Island. Granted out of 4 times playing, 2 times he played incredibly well, 1 time pretty decently (his first season) and 1 time not so great (HvV).

Definitely right even rupert,who i like for his honesty,made a terrible decision in voting for sandra.He first states that he respected parvarti for her physical game,next hes just giving sandra the vote,simply it looked to me,cause i just love you sandra and you are my best buddy.My opinion honestly is parvarti shouldve won that season,russell to me is one of the greatest if not the greatest player in survivor history even though i hate him personally but he made a mistake at the end.

Hell, if any 3 players from the Villains tribe had seen the 1st episode of the Samoa season Russell would have been voted out the 1st chance they get after the machete disappeared. He might not have even buried it if he knew that they saw what he did with Jaisons socks and everybodys canteens. Though I don't know why there was never a video of any of the Villains questioning Sandra considering what she did to "Christa Hastie and the fish" during the Pearl Islands season.
