It seems some people are confused about the comparison between Mike and Ben’s situations so I’ll try to clarify further. Ben was not allowed to play the idol when he did. When Jeff let him do that - and confirmed it was real - that was a violation of the rule. Jeff both let Ben play an idol early and confirmed to everyone that it was a real idol. Neither of those actions are allowed. On the other hand, Mike didn’t break a rule by asking Jeff to confirm the idol, nor did Jeff break a rule by denying confirmation of Mike’s idol. While Mike wasn’t trying to play the fake idol, it’s important to understand that if Mike cannot have his idol confirmed until after the votes are cast, neither should Ben be able to have his idol confirmed before the votes are cast - regardless of whether Ben is trying to play the idol or not. Just as he denied Mike, Jeff should’ve told Ben: “As per the rules, I can’t let you play that yet - nor confirm if it’s what you think it is - You gotta wait until the votes are cast to play/confirm it.” Also, in the following season, Ghost Island, at the final 6, Domenick played a fake idol before the votes were cast-but Jeff didn’t confirm if the idol was real or not. This situation creates another inconsistency with Ben's play, as Jeff did confirm Ben’s idol was real and any votes cast against him would not count. Why did Jeff not confirm Dom’s idol was fake, despite playing it? Confirming a real one but not a fake one is one in the same. Some people are understandably confused because Mike didn’t play the fake idol, but Ben did play the real one and it was confirmed to be real. They appear to be two different circumstances, but they're actually following the same set of rules. Idols can't be played early. Idols can't be confirmed early. Until they can. And that’s the point of the video - Jeff allows inconsistencies and sometimes the producers break their own rules.

I rewatched the footage and Jeff told the cast during the Ben vote that they are allowed to vote for Ben even though he had just played his immunity, their votes just would not count. But I do understand that your whole argument is about when an idol can and cannot be played. I am struggling to find this rule on the official document you linked to the video. So please help me, on what page of the rule book may we find this rule that prevents players from playing their idols before votes are cast?
@Peridiam
@Peridiam 2 жыл бұрын
@@thabangsiyabongakamatona7832 You're right, Jeff does say they can still vote for Ben, though their votes won't count. The official document linked doesn't talk about the idol - you can find the rules for the idol on the parchment that comes with them. For example, there's a visible shot of the rules in Episode 5 of HHH, that state: "If you intend to use the idol for yourself or someone else, you must do so after all of the votes have been cast, but before the votes are read." Here's a screenshot: i.imgur.com/ifd5gZk.jpg?1

@@Peridiam it feels like you are moving the goal post a little bit. I watched this video under the impression that all your "rule breaks" were issues where a rule in the official rule book was broken. I think we have established that by having Ben play that idol, Jeff did not break an official rule from the rule book. Survivor is notorious for changing rules on advantages. It would not be too far fetched to believe that this rule seen on that parchment for that single idol in HHH may not have been in the parchment that Ben had for his idol. Thank you for your engagement as I asked more questions on this issue. Most KZbinrs would have just avoided people who disagree with them. You are a germ. That said, I am still unconvinced that the Ben idol play is a rule break since: 1) It did not break any rule from the official rule book. 2) The comparison you made in the video with Mike is not exactly a similar situation since Ben's idol was played and Mike's wasn't. 3) We did not see the parchment directly linked to that specific idol Ben had as it is possible that rules for advantages differ (as is usual with survivor). I appreciate your work. Thank you.

In neither Mike's nor Dominick's case were they trying to play the idol. Dominick was just showing off his fake and he never asked Jeff to confirm or deny its power before the votes; that would have backfired. He just set it on the podium for extra flair. Mike didn't try to play it, he asked for it to be confirmed. He was trying to have his cake and eat it too, having the idol confirmed without losing it by playing it. That's why he was denied.

I personally hate any twists that take away something from others for that reason. The Idol Nullifier, the Vote Steal, the Hourglass... Additionally, the mandatory Final 4 fire-making when the contestants were not informed in advance (thus removing their justified expectation to vote). The extra vote is fine. Risking your own vote is fine because it is within your control to lose your powers. The Shot in the Dark? I actually really like the idea as an option for those with none left. But don't have it so that your right (provided as per the rules of the game), or advantage (earned as per the rules of the game), can be taken away without any agency on your part.

Another rule break of the ‘can’t strategize with the other tribe’ would be Boston Rob’s “if you take care of her I’ll take care of you” to Lex about Amber. Jeff did tell them to brake up the conversation but production not only allowed Lex to protect Amber but aired a ton of footage of Rob and Lex talking about the deal and turned it into one of the biggest storylines of the season going all the way into final tribal and beyond. Just like the JT idol storyline it was just too good to pass up, but a rule break none the less.

Yea I wouldn’t necessarily say that’s strategizing. They told them to break it up and it’s not like they were actually putting a plan together or anything. Neither of them were throwing challenges or communicating on who to take out from each tribe

I know there have been a number of game shows/reality shows in the past where contestants have done exactly this, and made production eat some crow. Having an encyclopedic knowledge of all rules is necessary for gaming a system. The biggest rule break that's essentially not even a rule anymore is the concept of "live tribal". It was cool and crazy the FIRST time it happened, but I really hate how every week it seems we have to waste time watching people whisper back and forth without subtitles while all the votes get decided in the last minute. Things were better when people could only talk to Jeff.

I personally like the live tribal. When people start to get up and go talk off to the side and you see people start to panic. One of my favorites was season 40 (winners) (I think) when Tony gathered the gang and everyone was up whispering and talking to each other and it shows Jeremy's face how scared he looked cause not a single person talked to him. He sat there and watched everyone discuss the vote without him so he played the advantage to leave tribal council. But I respect your opinion on the rule. I can see why you don't like live tribal.

I think Jeff screwed up on the Ben idol thing in the moment. He could’ve held up the rules if Jeff said “Ben is already giving me what he SAYS is an idol.” And just not confirm it until he reads the votes. But Jeff’s continuing hard on for Ben blinded him to the rules for a sec and in a moment of good TV confirmed it was the idol. Not the biggest mistake ever and maybe there has been a change in how that can work, but still a rule break nonetheless.

Yeah, I definitely think that Jeff was caught off-guard because there was no real reason for Ben to do what he did because why would you give the opposition the chance to rally before the votes were read? It doesn't benefit Ben to play the idol before the votes are read, which is what threw Jeff off. I don't think it necessarily matters one way or the other if someone decides to play the idol before votes are cast, though -- if they want to burn the idol and give the opposition enough time to come up with Plan B, then let them.

Another example being the merge "immunity" challenge in Survivor 41, and then the hourglass twist happening. Also, to go with your first example, the timeline starts with Tony in Cagayan asking if Jeff can validate an idol (at the time an idol can be played), then Jeff saying it IS an idol, followed by Tony using it on LJ. Then in Worlds Apart, Mike asks Jeff to validate it (at not the time idols are played) and Jeff says he has to wait until it is played, even though he validated Tony's before he actually played it. Then, in HvHvH, we have the Ben incident where he plays it before the votes are read. And finally, in Ghost Island where Domenick asks Jeff to validate the idol and Jeff reverts back to his answer with Mike, where he can't confirm until it's played.

It's not against the rules because the power to decide who makes fire and the immunity necklace are separate advantages. I believe Underwood actually asked beforehand to make sure before giving up the necklace.

Another thing that has always bothered me and I'm not sure if it's in the Survivor rule book or not. I don't believe that anyone should be allowed to go through another tribe members personal belongings looking for an idol or beef jerky. A person's personal effects are just that; personal. I think someone who goes through another person's things should have a vote automatically cast against them at TC.

@@Peridiam That's true, but I think that rule has no need to be strict because playing the idol before the vote inherently makes the idol weaker. Comparing it to Mike's situation isn't really fair to the producers because it's two different circumstances with two very different implications on the game. It's more of a technicality that the producers just decided wasn't worth the hassle rather than an established rule that had major impacts on the game. Either way, love the content keep it up!

Finding out if it was authentic would indeed help him.

The letter Tai found with the Hidden Immunity Idol in season 32 actually shows the rules on how to use the idol and it says that it must be used after the votes have been cast, but before the votes are read. And though it has always been used that way, except when that rule was broken, I have never seen the rule explicitly stated on the show before. I've only seen what they have done. But now it is obviously clear that that is the rule. Or at least that was the rule that season.

The idol possession stuff is fuzzy to me. Like in Tocantins when Taj lets Stephen hold on to the idol because he has pockets, he basically says its his because its in his possession. Later he tells JT if they vote her out, they keep the idol. But what if Taj never officially gave it to them? She also says if either of them need it they are free to use it. What if she changed her mind? Does it still belong to her even though she roughly gave them permission to take it?

This most recent season broke a rule about team immunity challenges. Before the tribes had "merged" as Propst made this abundantly clear they had not, they participated in a team immunity challenge (the one Erika got to swap the winners and losers which in itself seems like is breaking a rule). The rules clearly state the winners of the challenge will not participate in the next tribal council. Notice it didn't say tribe. In Fiji this rule was upheld when they participated in a team challenge post merge. So basically, Erika should not have been able to swap who was immune, but even if you want to say what she got to do was legal since it was "changing the outcome of who won" then the people she made immune technically won the challenge and should not have gotten to vote.

The funny thing is that in Survivor Philippines season 2, there was a similar bottle twist to Cook Islans, although was done post-merge, where the 2nd placer of the immunity challenge gets a parchment that's only to be opened when told to, and that winner would be the one immune in the 2nd elimination. While the Cook Islands broke that technicality, the host specifically did say that the 2nd elimination is ANOTHER Tribal Council. Unless there is a rule that there can only be one Tribal Council per 12 hours for example then they did technically eliminate 1 castaway each Tribal Council as they were officially different Tribal Councils. However they weren't able to talk in the 2nd Tribal Council which I dunno is a restriction that can be imposed.

I think if the injury/illness isn’t deemed life-threatening by the medical team, it’s up to the contestant if they stay in the game or not, and having a broken ankle is inconvenient, but not necessarily dangerous. Similarly, in Philippines, Dana leaving the game is technically a quit and not a medevac, since medical cleared her to stay if she wanted to because she didn’t need immediate treatment.

I'm not sure if this was mentioned yet but when peridiam highlights "vote to eliminate a single Contestant at each Tribal Council". Well, that entire rule was just thrown out the window during Cook Islands. The rest of the rule also mentions how you are meant to vote out a single player at each tribal until TWO contestants remained. Also the jury can only consist of seven players exactly to pick between the two contestants for a winner. Well, Cook Islands broke both of these rules with having a final three and a nine-player jury. Edit: I read all the rules now and there's another rule in a different section that says while there is seven people on jury, that number can change by the producers. but like anything can be changed by the producers so like who cares
