Master Jeff Speakman is an amazing martial artist, teacher and a true gentleman. He teaches so well explaining things so simply so that everyone can understand it, he said a quote that I am going to share with everybody. "A martial fighter will use his skills for combat but a martial artist will use his skills, abilities & his knowledge to help himself and those around him!" - Master Jeff Speakman

Jeff is a 7th dan in Goju-ryu also. Even though he's primary a representative for American Kenpo he still gets promotions from his original mentor Lou Angel.

Speakman fails to tell people that his real teacher was Larry Tatum. When he first came to LA, Parker sent him to train with Tatum. He trained Jeff from white belt to third degree black belt but had a falling out with Parker. During the filming of The Perfect Weapon Parker promoted Jeff to 4th degree. Ask any of the kenpo seniors like Tatum, Frank Trejo, Ron Chapel, etc. & they'll tell you the same thing. Not saying that Jeff didn't train in private with Parker, just that he omits some history.

I like Jeff Speakman and I'm not doubting Jeff's relationship with Ed Parker but Larry Tatum was Jeff's master. Jeff always talks about being Parker's protege but I've never heard him talk about Tatum. Jeff trained under Tatum from white to 2nd degree black belt. And yes there were guys way closer than him to Ed Parker. They were Frank Trejo, Huk Planas, Joe Polanzo, Larry Tatum, Ron Chapel, etc. Still love his movies though.

Chuck Sullivan was the first among these to be Ed Parker's best friend, and actual Partner. Of course after the split in the early 60's, when Jimmy Wang Woo took Ed's first 3 black belts.

Only once a week for an hour over a period of time is ALOT more than some got with Mr. Parker. Personally I'd take a one hour private lesson every week from a system's and wouldn't classify it as ONLY

Your correct, but... People should have the ability of receiving a 10th. Thats robbing them of there potential, their lifetime acheivments. Some men have studied for years and deserve it. Mr. Sullivan is the only man I know thats the highest ranking SGM. He actually tested for his tenth at 70 years old.

very true. I've not met a guy yet that can kick and pull back faster than I can shoot on him while he's kicking. But, my ground game is VERY limited. I can ear/hair pull, eye gouge, elbow and bite with the best of them, though. LOL.

Reaching to block or parry a kick is the first "NONO" I was taught in kungfu almost ten years ago. You know that kungfu style you guys borrowed your TIGER AND CRANE from? Yeah, THAT kungfu style. How about actually using your footwork and stepping off to the angle? You can either step behind the person or be right in front of them, but either way, you don't back up and you don't sacrifice your guard for a mid-level LEADING attack. There's more where that came from, don't play into it.

Really? Name all the Kenpo fighters in MMA that are good. The only Karate fighter I can even think of who's good is Lyoto Machida but he's a Jiu-Jitsu brown belt and he's been training boxing and kick boxing for some time now. On top of that Lyoto's not even a Kenpo karate guy he's Shotokan guy.How about you back up your comment with some evidence.Since Kenpo's the best for MMA write up list of all the Kenpo karate guys who are remotely successful in MMA.
