@@agathahenney358 Seeing as how this comes from NASA in the 2000s and that humanity is now sending stuff to Mars, it's likely they thought the Martians died off or that they were currently in the beginning of a second invasion already taking place outside the US while NASA was cut off. They'd best hope they have a better plan as modern human technology is far more capable of combating them than artillery guns once before.

actually there was no plague on mars in the war of the worlds musical game the martians explain that mars was incapible of sustaining life and that their efforts to maintain the biosphere were exhausted and as one martian put it "the water tables and temperature decrease accurately as does our population"

I've always interpreted it as implying that this scene is meant to take place in the real world and not the one in the story. With the idea being that you listened to the musical only to realize at the end that despite the odds the Martians are coming for us too.

That was most likely just the assault forces that were wiped out, the cylinder is more likely an apology of sorts, or just an attempt to wipe out as much people as they can before the bacteria got to all of them. Just my thoughts.
