How is it a master piece? As a marketing executive u fail to see how filming the sea, a skyline, a slowed down footage of tiger running, and then a esso petrol station advertises what the quality of engine oil can do for your vehicle.

I remember this advert so well, the music (more than the image of the tiger) ALWAYS stuck in my mind! I never knew, until very recently, that it was composed by Jeff Wayne! Every time I hear it, it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!! It's such a short piece of music but it made a massive impression on me as a teenager, very powerful and emotional in such a short space, a credit to the composer!

I can only echo the sentiments of the other comments. I too remember this from back in the 70s when I was still a kid in school. Seeing this and so many other great ads back then I can remember thinking that I can't wait to grow up and go out there, see the world etc. Of course, as you do get older you start to realize that few things are quite as glamorous as they look on TV 🤣 . BTW- I'm sure I'm not the only one that wondered what happened to the tiger in the ad? In fact, they actually used a number of different tigers over the decades, including, of course, the original live one (as opposed to the cartoon version) who have all long since passed away from old age. Such is life. It was an ingenious idea though, to use a real-life tiger to get the "tiger in your tank" idea across, they are incredibly majestic creatures and then couple that with the music by Jeff Wayne, it couldn't fail as an ad campaign. Thanks.

Yes, I remember these adverts from my childhood too! Such a powerful piece of music, stirs such emotions. When the advert switches from night to day, flying over a hedge low level and racing across a field accompanied by this tune, I think had something to do with why I became a helicopter pilot. It made me want to do that too! lol Thanks so much for posting. Such a shame we can't buy an original copy...

Well done MagicGeezer, great music (if we remember it we're too old) and early use of drone - type footage from 7 seconds in. I've got a 3 min, 51s. version on an audio cassette. It's got Syntoms in the mix, but sounds otherwise original.

Graham if you could upload this I'm sure Jeff wouldn't mind. I contacted him about 10 years ago for a clean (no voice over) copy and he didn't have one himself. McCann Erickson don't have a copy either. Neither does the BBC Gram archive. You'd be doing the world a favour as for many folk of our generation, it's the best piece of music of our childhoods.

@@MPW159 Sorry for the delayed reply. My version was given to me on a TDK SA cassette tape, one of the better tapes of its era - trouble is, it doesn't use the potential quality - the SQ is less than desirable, including a dropout or two. Most artists (rightly) wouldn't want sub-standard versions of their work published. However, based on the 'something is better than nothing' theory and the fact that you say Jeff would be OK with it, I will (eventually) digitise / upload (even though I've never uploaded anything to YT). When I do. I will link to it here so that it doesn't get missed.

One of the tigers used in the Esso adverts was called Tango. After Esso finished with him they dumped him in a dodgy eastern European zoo but after some years he was rescued by Woodside Wildlife Park in Lincolnshire. He managed to live the rest of his days in the company of a younger tigress and died late last year.
@mixinstyle6 жыл бұрын

Used to love the Esso ads, I still have the tigers tail Esso gave away at their petrol stations in the early 60s. Advertisers today should watch these old ads and learn how to attract potential customers attention, instead of the garbage they churn out now leaving you wondering what the hell the advert was actually about.

There must be a clean version somewhere in the world. The Credo 2 version on youtube is in stereo but is faster (a semitone higher) and obviously has the voice over. The BBC don't have a copy (I checked) so I wrote to Jeff Wayne and I don't think he has one either unless it's deep in the archive at Jeff Wayne Music. Everyone at McCann Erickson who was there at the time are now dead or left the company, and they probably would have been supplied the final mix (with V/O) for the job. Lost forever?

@billboy Hey that's great - you're very lucky to have those Esso mixes, if only there was a way of hearing them again. I worked with the BBC gram library for a while and as they did not have a clean copy of the Esso theme in the archive, I emailed Jeff Wayne and asked if he had one. He was very nice and wrote back saying he didn't have one either, and everyone at McCann Erickson who might had long gone, but he made me a midi synth version as a midi file which I still have.
