Scorpio Dude, The school used to be as white as white bread, therefore the name Jeff Davis (President of the Confederacy). After integration, initially students were bused for enforced integration. Now the surrounding neighborhoods have been integrated. This is a STEP BAND sir, as opposed to a MARCHING BAND (that do a lot of anal retentive tight steps, and of formation precision). Step bands exists all over the country, started by HBCU (Alabama State University, AL, started it after high school band Booker T Washington invented it). Step bands are known for current mainstream music, high precision steps, and break-out moves. They have been around nearly 75 years. These bands are used in TV ads, movies, presidential inaugurations, major parades, even played in front of the Queen, etc. For example, the band used on the field in the scene on the football stadium field of “Johnny Long Walk Home” is Alabama State University from Montgomery, AL. Maybe educating yourself a bit more and watching more Step bands than marching bands will help. Also, the fact that the Drum Major in this band is white is a big thing as the major movers in these historic bands are usually Black. But by his moves, he’s earned his spot and it wasn’t gratuitous. Perhaps it might do you well to watch a few.

This band represents an enormous achievement for the young people and their school. As I understand it, this is a very deprived area with a high percentage of the young people living in poverty. Despite this, the commitment of the young people is high and if the inclusive attitude means that a few of the dancers are overweight as suggested elsewhere on here, so what. This about the young people expressing themselves and feeling good as a student body. I note some people feel some of this expression is unduly sexual. I do not agree and nor should anyone else who recalls the surging hormones of mid teenage. They are being honest and giving an honest expression to these feelings. Well done, guys

I think this is amazing, it gives a purpose to many students, precision, team work and feeling unique. Those below complaining need to see the bigger picture,. Sure they are students but they are young women and men, that deserve support not criticism.

I don’t know if it’s just that I’m a senior citizen or what, but I’m wondering why all the bumping and gyrating and grinding. This seems a little much for high school.

Oh, get over it, you prunes. These kids have watched so much porn by the time they turn 16 your head would spin. This is not 1962. These kids are exposed to sexuality far younger than you were and even though you may not like it they would not feel nearly as comfortable doing Lollipop Guild or whatever Shirley Temple dance you think they should be doing in 2020. Seriously! Stop putting your own personal subjective Concepts of what is appropriate behavior on other people! It's so goddamn annoying. So damn sick of the moral policing in this country. And usually by a bunch of people who support politicians who have no morality at all.

@saran.40014 жыл бұрын
@@MondezDurden You missed the point, not surprisingly. It is one thing to have kids exposed to porn, which you do not know if that happened or not, and another thing for the school to support suggestive dancing. Go read up on teen pregnancy and learn a thing or two. It is not the school's job to help produce future students. Using insults and cursing is not an argument, BTW. All you did was validate what Pat wrote.

My comment is going to be geared towards the color guard (flags): The performance although was good from person to person and even though I’m watching a video, I can tell who is confident and having fun. However there were some things consistent across the board: Sails The cutting of planes Inconsistent hand positioning Inconsistent body and feet Too much looking around and the fact that you are not doing jumps or leaps with the flag there should be no drops....ever As far as everything else very good job.

I don't know anything about HBCU bands. This band has brought me into a whole new, really cool universe. I agree with your assessment. My question is what kind of training does the flag corp get prior to trying out? In the high school band I was in they'd take anyone and train them. What happens here?
@Thedreadedflutist4 жыл бұрын
theredhun that’s all depending on what training the instructor has and the amount of years they’ve spun. I’ve been through auditions where I’ve had do basic spins, tosses, tricks and a small routine. But it all depends from group to group

Where is the rifle/sword corp? Where are the majorettes that can actually twirl a baton? We had feature twirlers that could twirl as many as 3 batons, including fire batons, and I am from South Louisiana where our bands win national championships (consistently).

I think this band is very talented but I do think that was overly sexual for a group of high school kids. I feel the same way about dancing dolls with some of the dance moves and I understand is majorette style but it is a little adult. However, good luck with your future endeavors in college choices I am very proud of them to be doing something with their God-given abilities other than hanging out on the street

Yeah, I'm not American so this is all new to me and I'm fascinated, but the overly sexualisation of the girls dancing makes me uneasy

Just is the neighborhood the school is in. Lots of social and economic history and reasons. It's the south in a predominantly black neighborhood. If you want more in depth answer just start looking into the history of the South and HBCUs.

The High school marching bands in Mn do not have dancers separate from flag, and they wear proper costumes and they do not dance like they are strippers! Wow I can't believe what I'm watching!
