I've tried to use active track to make a circle around an object and that works quite well. I don't remember which of the sub-modes it was, probably spotlight. I've marked the object and then just used pushed the right controller to the right (or left) to make the circle. The advantage is that you don't have to get above the object first (like in POI mode), but the disadvantage is that it has to be an object recognizable optically for active track to work.

I prefer to do it manually, but actually using the circle function of active track trace, will do the job if you can't get over the object and set the center of the radius with POI.

I try to fly manually as much as possible, just for the challenge's sake. :-) Although in tricky situations letting the drone do some of the stuff and pushing in and out on the sticks seems very smart! What I would advise is to desensitize your yaw stick around the middle, so you can better dose it around the neutral field. It gains speed further outwards, so no control is 'lost'. (It's in the settings for the controller). Cheers from Athens, Dan

I started flying manually learning techniques and to be honest, I get better shots by flying manually. The only shot where I like a little assistance is when orbiting; I like to keep the gimbal locked onto a target if I am also changing my altitude whilst rotating as it tends to be quite challenging to adjust four parameters at the same time (altitude, strafe, rotation and gimbal pitch) while ensuring that the POI remains the focus and the transitions are smooth. With professional drones used for movies, there is one pilot operating the drone and a cameraman operating the gimbal and I can totally understand why :D. Doing a manual shot of a POI rotation with altitude changes is by far the most challenging shot I have learned so far and here's a quick tip: go into your settings and play around with all your speed settings to find what suits YOU best. I found that normal was too sensitive and tripod lacked dynamism. I started with Cinematic mode and further tweaked a few settings to get those perfect shots. The cool thing about doing this manually is that you can then move away from your POI towards the horizon in a really smooth cinematic way that brings this little "extra" to your shot.

Do you have to start the video before you enter this mode? I can get the POI locked, but after 'apply' and 'start I get no video. The record button greys out after I hit 'start', I assumed it was doing it automatically, but it appears not. Later: the new version of the app does not give access to the record button until 'hide' is pressed. So in addition to setting everything up it is essential to 'hide' the POI interface.

I do the manual orbit all the time. I like to do is fly to the subject I want to orbit, right stick will be forward, then slowly roll right stick around to the left, at the same time give it right yaw. This is also good for learning how to transition from flying forward to flying sideways, while direction of flight says the same.

Great clear info, well explained, thanks. I prefer flying in manual to be able to use the 180° rule, i.e double the shutter to framerate. When do you set-up the exposure? before you enter POI mode or after? or else it would default to auto (and that's horrible as we all know)

Great video Jeff. But it doesn’t automatically record right? You have to initiate the record button BEFORE you set up POI, right? When I set up POI and the screen pop comes up it says “record POI.” That is a little confusing because I think all it does is note the POI you have set up.you but doesn’t actually begin to record the video. And because the prompt covers up the record button, you don’t know where the recording or not. Is that right?
@JeffGreeneChannel
@JeffGreeneChannel 5 жыл бұрын
I never noticed that but yes you are 100% correct. "record poi" is only referencing the GPS location of the poi. With the exception of the QuickShots(dronie, rocket, etc), every other intelligent flight mode will require you to manually press the record button.

Hi Jeff Greene, can I use Point of Interest Mode even in low altitudes ? For example, if I want to have a nice smooth circling shot around a human subject, all I need to do is hover the drone on top of the subject, and set the standard settings, and then just click apply and let it go by itself, will that be correct ?
@JeffGreeneChannel
@JeffGreeneChannel 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Isaac, POI mode is mainly used on an object that is not moving, like a building structure. For a moving target like a person, you would be better off using Active Track Mode. When you are in Active Track mode you can use the slider on the screen to make the mavic rotate around the subject in the same way as POI mode. Be very cautious in either mode at low altitude, as there are no side sensors. There are many pilots that have crashed into trees from the side in both modes. Keep that pause button close by. :)

@@JeffGreeneChannel Hi Jeff, just a quick question, I tried Active Track Mode, and I was able to set the speed of how fast I want the drone to go. Well put together Jeff. Sport mode is tough to orbit bc your attitude usually is affected by wind at some point in the orbit and the gimbal has issues keeping the horizon level. Instead of the tripod mode, using the cinematic mode works better for me. I live in a high wind velocity area (for the drone). Tripod mode sometimes gives jerks because the drone tries to keep the camera pretty stable and sturdy, but the wind is more than what the drone can handle so it tips off in one direction causing a really bad jerk. In cinematic mode however, if this happens, the jerk caused is compensated by smooth movement of the gimbal by the drone. Thus, the jerk looks more like a smooth movement than a bump. Unfortunately, there is no other way for me to do this. Manual orbits are insanely difficult here because the wind is unpredictable. At about 10 storeys high, the wind is so jerky that I had considered giving up on the drone. But the cinematic mode rescued me. It produces some decently acceptable footage even at pretty high winds. Once, I wanted to orbit left but the wind was so strong that even on full throttle to the left, the aircraft moved right. Because cinematic mode was enabled, the movement to the right was smooth (basically it slows down all the reaction timings of the drone thus creating smoother movement). So I filmed a right orbit instead and reverse played it in post. P.S.: What are your thoughts about the cinematic mode?

The downside with trying to accomplish these on manual, (on my experience) is if you get video lag, even for a fraction of a second, if the aircraft is out of your sight, is hard to keep the course steady by looking at the live video feed, I think that if DJI does a quick update and display the % of all the axis when you push either the throttle, yaw and side axis, it will help find sweet spots for a particular motion or effect

I like using manual most purely for staying in control of the aircraft. However, out in the countryside or out of harms way I will use some of the more convenient flight programs
@Mudinyeri

I am by no means an expert, but using Tripod mode helped me do POI manually. Of course, you can also make adjustments to your sticks to accomplish essentially the same thing, but the Tripod mode gives you those nice, slow, cinematic moves that a slow speed on the automated POI mode gives you.

Wow.... What an awesome tutorial!! I have a few questions about the POI mode; Do you have to select on something that's different from it's surroundings? I'd like to use this in the mountains but, since all the trees similar, could I just select one of the trees or does it have to be something that stands out? Thanks again for the great video..... I have learned so much from your videos!! Ray
@JeffGreeneChannel
@JeffGreeneChannel 6 жыл бұрын
Raymond Sherman thanks man,much appreciated! Nope, you can just start the poi on anything or nothing at all. In poi, the mavic is using gps coordinates. So, you should be good to go in the mtns. Just be mindful of your elevation (above all trees), since there are no side sensors. Happy flying!

You're Welcome....... One more question if I may; Do I need to use cellular data from my cellular plan for this mode or just the WiFi? Thanks for the great information......!! You're Awesome!! Ray
@JeffGreeneChannel
@JeffGreeneChannel 6 жыл бұрын
Raymond Sherman neither actually. I typically set my phone to airplane mode when i am flying. The gps is only between the sat's and the quad. The wireless is between the quad and the remote controller. The remote controller is a wired connection to your phone via usb. Make sense? So the only thing your phone is doing is running the app, not using cell service or data.
@rapaent
@rapaent 6 жыл бұрын
Awesome!! I wasn't sure about needing cellular with this particular mode. I'll be using an iPad with WiFi only. I do understand your explanation of the connection. It's great to know that I can use a POI on anything or nothing at all! I will definitely be mindful of my altitude in the mountains. I sincerely appreciate you taking the time in answering my questions...... Now I'm going to practice this mode before I hit the mountains. Can't thank you enough!! Ray😋👍

Quick question. I know on the Phantoms it may be different but when you come down to land and your lets say 3 feet off the ground you pull the stick down and it lands and the props stop. If you are at a 100 feet and pull the left stick all the way down the props wont stop will they?? Doesn't it sense if it is near the ground?? Sometimes I want to come down faster but am afraid to try it??
@JeffGreeneChannel
@JeffGreeneChannel 5 жыл бұрын
Yep no worries at all. It will just descend at max speed, which is only 5-8mph, or similar. Once it gets close to the ground it will pause as the obstacle avoidance sensors detect the ground. Nothing to worry about
@fomerrxstudent
@fomerrxstudent 5 жыл бұрын
Props only stop if you bring both sticks down simultaneously. The left only descends in altitude (default settings here).

Hi agent00immpression, i do color grade a little bit. Try shooting in D-Cinelike, and changing your color style settings to (0,-3,-2). That should help a bit with the grain.

I have a question regarding line of sight. I am a huge fan of drones, so don't criticize the question in a negative way. I personally see zero problems with drones, so this question is merely for keeping things legal (I already think this hobby is way over regulated). I'm concerned I'm going to get my butt reamed for doing this type of shooting and keeping the copter within line of sight, I'm confused, are there regs I'm not aware of that I should know about. As a side note I am an absolute newbie to the Hobbie, and I don't want to be that guy that made waves for our sport due to ignorance. Any helpful insight is welcome, please don't be dis-respectful, I'm here to learn.

Get a crystal sky instead. Reason why disconnects happen with phones is not only from interference but also all the installed software on the phone competing with the Go app for GPS and Wifi access/ resources. Having a locked down tablet without all that to distract the Go app makes for a far more stable flying experience
@JeffGreeneChannel
@JeffGreeneChannel 6 жыл бұрын
That's a really good use case N0w3lly. I try to fly in airplane mode for the same reason. I agree with you that the majority of disconnects are not b/c of the go4 app, but b/c of all of the other things running on your phone. Cheers!
@n0w3lly90

Just to add to the above, the 2.4Ghz band is an exceptionally competed band, and that is predominantly what phones, WiFi and many other airband facilities operate on. 5.8ghz is used less, but, that's not going to be forever as organisations and others cotton on to its availability. 5.8G also gives wider bandwidth for wider channels, so carry more data... But over shorter distances as the frequency is narrower in beam width. Competing resources are always a problem in radio frequencies, so it is best to minimise those conflicts in your kit. I have a polarpro bracket for my mavic air controller, and sat upon that a DJI crystal sky. It actually gives better balance than having a phone in the way at the base of the controller, and, never once a disconnect. Also, the dji updates are less frequent and much more stable for the crystal sky, and the external battery and higher brightness of the CrystalSky are also huge bonuses
@n0w3lly90
@n0w3lly90 6 жыл бұрын
@@JeffGreeneChannel you are very welcome Jeff. There are great solutions out there for very ergonomic attaching of the CrystalSky to mavic drones, and a really sound investment. The 5.5" is more than sufficient, you'll get very long external battery life, 1000 nits brightness and expandable memory in the monitor too. The polar pro or mavmount mounts I recommend, which are made of aluminium and are hollow so you can comfortably put your fingers through, and it allows you to use USBC TO USBA (the bottom connector port) of the controller which is more stable than the micro USB on the side too. Give it a go ;)
