January 19th, 2008. 12 years ago, Roy Jones Jr and Felix Trinidad clashed in a 170 pound non title catchweight bout billed as "Bring on the Titans". Both fighters were past their primes at this point and Trinidad had a 32 month long layoff with his last bout taken place in May 2005 where he lost a lopsided UD12 in a WBC Middleweight Title Eliminator against slick southpaw Winky Wright.
Prefight records; Jones 52(38)-4, Trinidad 42(25)-2.
Entering the bout, the seasoned Trinidad with 18 year pro experience had won world titles in 3 different weight divisions; Welterweight, Super Welterweight & Middleweight. He had wins over top oppositions in Luis Ramon Campas, Luis Garcia, Jake Rodriguez, Kevin Lueshing, Freddie Pendleton, Larry Barnes, Hugo Pineda, Oba Carr, Rodney Moore, Hector Camacho, Maurice Blocker, Troy Waters, David Reid, Pernell Whitaker, William Joppy, Fernando Vargas, Ricardo Mayorga & Oscar De La Hoya.
On the other hand, the 19 year veteran Jones was a Quadruple World Champion at Middleweight, Super Middleweight, Light Heavyweight & Heavyweight with notable triumphs over the likes of Vinny Pazienza, Mike McCallum, Montell Griffin, Lou Del Valle, Tony Thornton, Jorge Vaca, Thomas Tate, Glenn Wolfe, Otis Grant, Eric Harding, Eric Lucas, Antonio Tarver, Jorge Castro Fernando, Julio Cesar Gonzalez, Merqui Sosa, Richard Hall, Clinton Woods, Thulani Malinga, Virgil Hill, Bernard Hopkins, James Toney & John Ruiz.
Interestingly, Jones boldly predicted a round 4 KO victory.
The first half was quite competitive as Tito connected with a number of accurate body punches while Roy’s right hand was very sharp and often find it’s mark upstairs. However, Jones was overall the more effective defensively as he blocked plenty of head punches in addition to taking Felix’s body blows very well.
Trinidad connected with a number of low blows and was cautioned several times by referee Referee Arthur Mercante Jr, but ho points were deducted.
In the second half, Roy was in total control of the action as Felix had little answers to his greater hand speed and reflexes as well as ring generalship as he landed clean and frequent well timed shots.
In round 7, Tito was hit with a blinding short right hook at the top of his head which resulted in a delayed reaction knockdown. Later in round 10, he was decked again courtesy of a speedy 1-2 by Jones.
As a whole Trinidad’s ring rusts due to long periods of inactivity and being the naturally smaller, less athletic fighter were apparent disadvantages through 12 rounds. However, to his credit he had arguably put up the best possible effort.
After 36 minutes action, Captain Hook earned his 52nd career victory via UD12 with scores of 117-109 & 116-110 (2x).
Even though Roy was unable to fulfill his 4th round knockout prediction, but it was in that particular stanza that Jones started to gain momentum of the bout which ultimately led to his victory.
Felix Trinidad proceeded to retire after the loss, and have hinted on a possible comeback but would later confirmed that this was his last bout.
On the other hand, Roy Jones continued fighting for another decade before finally hanging up the gloves after a 28 year career that spanned across 4 different decades with a final record of 66(47)-9.
Hope you guys enjoy this simple highlight, and remember to SUBSCRIBE for more boxing goodness! Keep punching!

Trinidad was a great fighter; but let’s face it...he wasn’t a natural light heavyweight. It’s obvious that he never came close to hurting Jones, nor did Jones respect his power. Jones was the naturally bigger man with more effective power, though he was past his prime. Trinidad sure was a hell of a welterweight and light middleweight, though

No offence to Tito, but he did not belong in the ring with RJJ, this was a mismatch from the time the bell rang, poor Trinidad looked like Jones sparring partner here.
