November 8th, 2008. In the "Battle of the Superpowers", undefeated Joe Calzaghe aka “The Pride of Wales” takes on “Captain Hook” Roy Jones Ir in the 1st defense of his Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight Championship.
Prefight records; Calzaghe 45(32)-0, Jones 52(38)-4.
In January 2008, Jones dominated Felix Trinidad en route to a lopsided UD12 victory while Calzaghe defeated “The Executioner” Bernard Hopkins via SD12 in the same year to bag The Ring Magazine 175 pound title.
Thus, a showdown between the 2 athletic warriors were set to take place towards the end of the calender year.
Entering the bout, Jones who was world champion at Middleweight, Super Middleweight, Light Heavyweight & Heavyweight had notable victories over Merqui Sosa, Jorge Vaca, Jorge Fernando Castro, Vinny Pazienza, Julio Cesar Gonzalez, Clinton Woods, Mike McCallum, Montell Griffin, John Ruiz. Glenn Wolfe, Thulani Malinga, Eric Harding, Eric Lucas, Lou Del Valle, Otis Grant, Thomas Tate, Tony Thornton, Reggie Johnson, Richard Hall & John Ruiz.
On the other hand, the unbeaten Brit who won world titles at Super Middleweight & Light Heavyweight had beaten commendable oppositions in Richie Woodhall, Sakio Bika, Jeff Lacy, Omar Sheika, Juan Carlos Gimenez, Robin Reid, Byron Mitchell, Charles Brewer, Chris Eubank, Mikkel Kessler & Bernard Hopkins.
While 39 year old Jones was past his prime, he still had pretty fast hands and quick reflexes despite not nearly the fighter he was just 5 years ago. He put Calzaghe down with a right hand in the opening frame just as Hopkins did but replay shows that it was his wrist that landed on Joe’s chin.
In the 2nd frame, Roy landed some power shots but Calzaghe (as in most of his fights) threw and connected more. The unorthodox Welshman dominated the 3rd by outlanding the challenger while showboating and evading most of his punches in a good comeback from the knockdown in the 1st round.
Between rounds 4 and 6, both fighters had their moments; Jones landed with more single telling blows while Joe connected with higher volume of punches upstairs and downstairs thus the fight was more or less even after 18 minutes of action. The most significant punch through the 1st half was a thunderous right uppercut by Captain Hook in the 6th.
However, Calzaghe’s body work was starting to pay dividends as Roy was slowing down towards the midpoint.
At around the 1.22 mark of the 7th, Calzaghe opened up a horrid gash above the challenger’s left eye with a perfect straight left hand and blood began to flow. It affected his vision all the way, as Calzaghe targeted the injured eye with his renown volley of nonstop punching while effectively working downstairs to keep Roy at bay.
This was the 1st time in Jones’ boxing career (amateur and pro) that he was actually cut and very badly too. At his best, he was rarely hit clean due to his unparalleled speed and reflexes.
Overall, Jones was utterly overwhelmed throughout the 2nd half as he had little answers against the confidently laid out assaults of the defending champion who not only dominated, but showboated his way en route to a lopsided UD12 win.
All 3 judges scored it 118-109 for The Italian Dragon who retained his perfect professional record.
Just as in his fights against Chris Eubank, Byron Mitchell and Bernard Hopkins, he was floored in the early goings but came back to emerge victorious.
This was the last fight for Joe Calzaghe as he retired after the win with an unblemished final record of 46(32)-0. He is one of the few world champions who ended his career without a loss along the likes of Terry Marsh, Edwin Valero, Ji Won Kim, Sven Ottke, Ricardo Lopez, Rocky Marciano, Andre Ward & Floyd Mayweather Jr.
As for Captain Hook, he went on to fight for 10 more years before hanging up his gloves at 49 years of age after a career that lasted nearly 30 years that spanned through 4 different decades.

Stephen Terranova, He’s not really underrated. He was a great fighter, but he wasted his prime years defending a lightly regarded WBO belt against mostly B and C class opposition.

Stephen Terranova : He was a great one for sure, but doesn’t have the signature wins that the elite ones have. He was still an extremely talented fighter. Jones in his prime would have killed Calzaghe. Those openings Calzaghe was leaving would have led to Jones knocking him through the ropes just a few years prior.

Joe Calzaghe is the type of fighter that would give anyone nightmares. Not particularly powerful but overwhelmingly quick hands, incredible stamina and an absolutely crazy chin. He had a lot of power, but destroyed his hands. His style developed to not hit hard because of this, getting more and more extreme over his career which is where the "slapping" insult comes from. He couldn't even spar anyone for a lot of the end of his career his hands were so bad, which is fairly impressive sparring is pretty important even for the best.

sayd245, It seems to me that it’s you who’s new to the sport. Again, Joe was a great fighter. I watched his entire career play out. But his record isn’t in any way spectacular. He wasted his prime years by fighting low level guys in a weak division. He should have fought up at LHW and in the U.S. much earlier than he did. Go and look at his resume from Eubank to Lacy. A poor 9 year period for a man of Joe’s ability. It was a joke that he fought a guy like Mario Veit twice. He should have been in the mix with Roy, Dariusz, Griffin, Reggie, Tarver and Nunn etc, instead of starving himself to make SMW in order to fight lowly ranked opposition, in the defence of his lightly regarded WBO belt.

Calzaghe's punches were quite deceptive, they don't look very powerful, but they've got tremendous speed behind them and they come in intense flurries. No matter who you are, they will take their toll after just a couple of rounds, you can't simply keep soaking up that amount of high speed impacts.

He changed his style because of his hands to be all about speed and punches in bunches. You can’t really throw as fast as he does and it be solid punches every time. So yeah they might not be the prettiest but I imagine if any of his opponents was truthful about him and their fights with him, they’d say he fucked them up and took them to a tough place. Fatigued, constantly in defence and guessing what he’s gonna throw and getting hit buy 20% power punches but a barrage of them that never let up.

All he’s done is beat a shot Jones, and then Johnson did the same” This is what Joe said in 1999, when Roy was in his prime: “Be honest, Roy Jones is a good fighter. But I’m not chasing him, as I don’t want tough fights” Do you need help joining the dots? Joe wouldn’t go near Roy when he was great, but he was happy to fight him when he knew he was shot. It was absolutely shameful. Regarding Collins, Roy didn’t duck him.

The bulk of his resume is made up of unknown Euro level guys, in the defence of a WBO belt which wasn’t even considered as being a legitimate world title, until the mid to late 00’s. Joe had no ambition when he was younger. He wouldn’t go near Roy, or move up to LHW, which was a much more competitive division. He also wouldn’t fight in the U.S. to raise his profile, claiming that he had a fear of flying. He was content to fight low level guys at home for 90% of his career, until finally fighting 2 legends. One who was finished as a top level fighter. And one who was 43 years of age. I lived through the era. The stats look great. But not when you apply the relevant context.

@@edwards1090 Roy was shot in 2008. He was completely finished as a top level fighter. Joe aged much better and was still a top 10 P4P fighter at the time. Age and ring age are 2 completely different things. Everyone ages differently, depending on their styles and their circumstances. Prime for prime, Roy was clearly operating on another level, just like how Joe was operating on another level when they’d aged. Nobody who watched both of their careers would ever have favoured Joe over Roy, prime for prime. Roy was the P4P King for a decade, where he won titles from MW-HW, whilst barely losing rounds in the majority of his fights.

People forget Jones was fighter of the decade in the 90s and started boxing as a light middleweight and moved through the weights right up to Heavyweight winning titles along the way. That's one hell of a achievement, unfortunately making history took its toll on his body and when he came back down from Heavyweight to Light Heavy he had lost his speed reflexes and agility, assets that in his prime had made him almost unbeatable. The 3 year age difference is not really significant in this bout it's all to do with what Roy had put his body through throughout his career to achieve his goals. Joe got the W on his resume against a legend in his last fight but he beat a washed up faded Roy here who was way past his best.

If he was American then they'd rate him up there alongside Mayweather. The problem with him is how unorthodox of a boxer he was, a Southpaw with a solid punch and super fast speed. He was every opponents trainers nightmare, most people from the states wanted nothing to do with him, every time he did get fights he would basically take silly level pay cuts to make it happen because nobody wanted anything to do with Joe Calzaghe. People use the excuse that he beat mainly low class opponents but in reality he beat everyone that was put in front of him. Most trainers didn't want to put their fighters in front of him.

Shadow Jenkins, I watched his entire career unfold. Yes, he was a great fighter. But he wasn’t in Floyd Mayweather’s class. Nowhere near. He didn’t just fight who was put in front of him. He was more than happy to fight all of the guys he faced. We know this. He’s incredibly proud of his number of WBO defences and he’s even bragged of them. So nobody made him fight those guys. He wasn’t avoided by everybody. He wasted his prime years by fighting guys like Mario Veit twice. He should have moved up to LHW years earlier, where he could have tried to have been in the mix with: Roy, Dariusz, Griffin, Hill, Reggie, Nunn and Tarver etc. But instead of doing that, he literally had to starve himself in order to make SMW, in order to fight mostly B and C class fighters. Until he whooped Lacy in 2006, he was relatively unknown outside of Europe. And that’s the truth. A great fighter, but one who wasn’t overly ambitious. He wasn’t serially avoided, he was just content doing what he was doing.

Aside of the fight, it is cool to see a personality like calzaghes', unlike other boxers he doesn't get intimidated by roy's style, other guys would get mentally blocked or get demoralized by the mind games roy plays by taunting them, and it's not just the taunting but the addition to knock him down in the first round and connect good strikes, rather than feeling small, calzaghe improved, stepped foward, played the same game and destroyed roy. Mentality, believing in yourself and know who you are are such important factors to become a champion.

He labelled Roy as being shot and said that a fight between them would be pointless. He said that yet fought him regardless. He was certainly intimidated by Roy when Roy was in his prime though.
