June 22nd, 1976. In his first world title opportunity, Carlos “King” Palomino took on reigning WBC Welterweight Champion John H. Stracey in Wembley Stadium in the United Kingdom.
Both men were 25 years of age at the time of this bout.
Prefight records; Palomino 19(9)-1-3, Stracey 44(36)-3-1.
In December 1975, Stracey got off the canvas in the first round and rebounded with a stunning TKO6 victory to capture the WBC Welterweight Title from Jose Napoles after causing severe cuts on the legendary Cuban who went on to retire following the defeat.
In March 1976, Stracey successfully made the first defense of his title against Hedgemon Lewis via TKO10.
For his second defense, he was up against the up and coming Mexico born Californian aiming for Welterweight glory.
For the most part, both fighters went toe to toe in an explosive warfare but the defending champion was slightly more effective and ahead in the cards after 6 rounds by utilizing his long right hand and left jab as leads to land pinpoint hooks to the challenger’s head.
However, from round 7 on Palomino began to increase the output of his body attacks whilst going upstairs to great effect and in a number of occasions, he snapped back the head of Stracey who often fought back valiantly but unable to dish out the same kind of damage that was dealt against him.
In round 12, the accumulation of body blows by Palamino finally took it’s toll on Stracey who hit the deck twice but somehow he was able to get back on his feet both times in a tremendous display of courage.
Unfortunately for the dogged Londoner, he was ultimately dethroned when referee Sid Nathan stepped in to halt the contest while he was helplessly flailing on the ropes from the unflinching fusillades of punches by King Palomino who began his reign as the new WBC Welterweight Champion in triumphant fashion.
"It was a voluntary defense by Stracey, not a command one, and, to be perfectly honest, we picked what we took to be a competitive, saleable, but least dangerous opponent for Stracey. We were never more wrong."
- Mickey Duff (Stracey's matchmaker)
Enjoy this highlight of an underrated fight and KING PALOMINO'S ascension to Welterweight glory!

The fear of men then was different in decades past. They accept the risks and keep going forward, marching head first into the combat. Fear was simply something acknowledged and passed.

I mean, they thought you could train your chin by getting punched more in the head.

This is a good film for young prospects to watch. Carlos stayed committed to body work from the first round and it payed off. Carols was a great boxer and I don’t think he got credit for his defense. It allowed him to stay close and return hard combinations. He also got great leverage on his punches. I love to watch the fighters of this era.

This looks like a typical after school (High School) fight from back in the 1970's here in East Los Angeles! It's a shame that the generations that followed could not settle differences in a ring but switched to firearms instead. It's plane to see climbing into the ring to face your opponent is a honorable though extreme way to settle disagreements. God please bless all who have been or will ever be severely injured in the ring🙏

That was one of the most devastating displays of body punching that I’ve ever seen. Palomino made Stracy literally CRY from those body shots.

At 6:07 it seems that Stracey wanted to bite Palomino's shoulder; in the end Stracey was "cooked" with a concert of body shots and the "upper cut: classic punch". Very good narrator.

Prpper boxing.had it all, gruelling, punishing, plenty of headshots and bodyshots, without holding, elbows or ducking down.Palomino showed real desire and John H showed total committment and threw good shots of his own but was unable to eascape the body attacks.Great fight by both pugilists

These two guys would beat any Current Welterweight fighters, especially wearing those 8oz horse hair filled gloves over the old championship distance of 15x3min rnds!!!

Uh no……..both guys are super easy to hit and pretty basic. Stracey is wide and has terrible defense. Stiff as a board, front foot heavy. Palomino has slow feet and gets hit fairly easy by a guy who’s not fast at all and pretty basic. Errol, bud, boots, Thurman, would stop these guys before it got to round 15.

@@selfmade8884 Both of these guys would beat Thurman or any modern Welterweight, who couldn't do the traditional 15 rnds championship distance anyway!!!
